Did you know that HDDCS was based on real life?

It was a screen adaptation of the famous Bengali romantic-autobiography by Maitreyi Devi, which documents her taboo and tumultous romance with Frenchman Mircea Eliad. The original, named "No Honyote"(Love that can't be killed) remains one of the most epic real-life tragic romances ever documented. The story of HDDCS follows the exact storyline with a changed climax(where Ash chooses Ajay dramatically over Salman);in real, Maitreyi Devi never got to meet Mircha again after he went away, although she eventually married and moved on. There is a version of the tale written by Mircea Eliad from HIS perspective, titled "La Nuit Bengali", or "Nights In Bengal".

So most of SLB's movies are either adaptation of books or remakes including the current show😕
Only movies I love by SLB are Khamoshi and HDDCS😃
Acting wise Black was good but I cannot stand the movie where AB keeps on hitting Rani, I mean that's not how things work with any child😡

It was a hotchpotch of Na Hanyate, La Nuit Bengali (Mircea's fiction), & Woh 7din.

I knew it was similar to Woh Saat Din, which was loosely based on a novel, but I had no idea the novel was based on real life.

It is not surprising though. How many desi men and women have affairs, fall in love, but give up everything to marry per their parent's wishes. The only thing is very few are honest with their spouses and not many spouses will let go like that.

Mircea Eliade went on to become a celebrated historian of religion. He wanted to study Indian philosophy under the guidance of Maitrayi Devi's father Surendranath Dasgupta, a stalwart in his field. HDDCS closely follows the events chronicled in Na Hanyate (an excerpt from Bhagvad Gita) uptil the wedding, minus the songs and dances, of course! The chilli-eating sequence comes to mind...and the moment of his departure, when he looks up to see his love standing at the balcony above.
Never read La Nuit Bengali. But I have heard that it differed somewhat from Na Hanyate.
