With the release of Jab tak hai Jaan one of the most awaited movies since it was announced in 2010, the euphoria surrounding it there certainly but why not the craziness that used to exist once for a Yash Chopra Movie. Well Jb tak hai jaan is just a catalyst in this write up...but speaking about the industry as a whole we know Romance Genre is the most sucessful and safe genre for film makers.
The entire 90's recovered the condition of our Hindi Film industry which went pathetic in 80's due to Kitschy movies where hero- heroines used to dance over utensils and, tortorous dialogues of unwed mothers like main tumhari bachhe ki maa banne wali hoon, and that of the villains preying over the heroine more than the hero.
But 90's came up with romances like Dil, Jo jeeta wohi sikandar, Hum aapke hai kaun, saajan, dilwale Dulhania le jayenge, Dil to pagal hai, Raja Hindustani, Kuch Kuch Hota hai, Hum dil de chuke sanam, Taal,
As i said romance had been the most safe genre, The journey from 2000's began on a diffrent set up movies which were not at all hard core romances like the 90's. Altough Karan Johar and Yashraj trie first few years from 2000-2003..But even they later changed the strategy ,Yashraj films shocked all wen aditya chopra the creator of DDLJ,,Mohhabatein, himself penned down DHOOM which was so dufferent from their movies. Karan came with Kaal, kabhi alvida na kehna, which werenot is perfect genre...they were dark films. The decade was all about non conventional films like dil chahta hai, lagaan, Jism, Page 3, fashion, Black, and a variety. But not any hard core romance..Not even Jodha Akbar..which was good in subtle ways but not an wow experience.
The 2000's went too some how then from 2010 again another journey begins where the southern remakes started ruling the roost, where roamnce was just a 10 minute affair in the script and the movies were all about a hero hitting a guy who falls 100 metres away . dabanng, bodyuiard, Singham, Rowdy rathore, agneepath occupied the genre.
however this year we had student of the year and Jab tak hai jaan as representatives of romance battalion.
Watching these new age romances is refreshing but wy is it getting difficult to make the movie a memorable experience. Action, Comedy, new wave cinema, issue based(realistic) films, ect etc may be the fashion but roamce can never fade away. A simple thing i sometimes ask is, when was the last time i felt this is the movie that will be forever marked inside out hearts. I watched jab tak hai jaan, student of the year but did not feel as this is the movie that i can keep on watching ahead.A memorable experience is not the term i would have liked to use.
In last few years can we say we have watched a romantic movie that we can hold in our memories for upcoming yeras as memorable?. Roamtic movies are being made but as i told our speciality is romance not sci-fi or action movies..but why arent we able to deliver a unforgettable movie in long time since 90's . For me somehow i can have Kal ho na ho, veer zaara and jab we met in the list.
But why is it that like 90's gave us films like DDLJ, KKHH, that we cherish even till today, but i dont find any recent romance that i can carry ahead to watch in upcoming years.
