Well I keep seeing different posts again & again either confused about how TRP's work or giving wrong information regarding the same. So I thought of making a post about it which could help many to understand the concept better. Well as for my authenticity, which I know many people will ask... I am from media planning and we get info on all the TRP tracking of all channels.. which is almost 100 channels every Wednesday.
The main question regarding TRP should be
Does your home have a TAM Meter?
Because only the homes having TAM Meters installed can actually help raise the TRP of any show.
There are only 15,000 homes in India that have these meters installed onto their television sets. The homes are selected according to the rural / city markets and various zones in India. The first 10 minutes of viewership of any show / slot is recorded in these and then calculated. Repeat telecast does not count in the TRP's. Only fresh content is taken into consideration. The week is calculated from every Sunday to the next Saturday. Then 2 days of calculations by various media agencies and the TRP ratings are shared every Wednesday morning for the past week. Because various agencies calculate it, there may be a 0.1 TRP difference in information on various websites. To sum it up, people who do not have TAM Meters in their homes, which is most of us cannot help in raising the TRP's of any show.
Online Viewership: This bit is a little tricky... this surely does NOT add up to TRP's. But it shows the channel how popular the show is around the world. Mainly youth based shows have a lot of online fan following which is absolutely noticed by the channel... so a channel will not shut a show merely considering low TRP's... online medium is good to create buzz and hype for any show... that is why various sites lie IF, TC, TT, Rangmunch & many more have got huge fanbase. In the next 5-10 years I guess online viewership will surely be considered.
Sorry, that this mail has become a little too long.. but guess this was necessary to clear every Wednesday chaos... Tam Meter or no meter please keep watching our show... wherever & whenever possible... Enjoy! 😊
