i have taken the following question from another thread because i thought it was an important one to understand.

"Why has the quality of singers, in these reality shows, declined?" - What Went Wrong? Topic by ab_sgmp

finding good singers from the masses out there is a lot like mining for gold. it's an expensive operation to drill and set up a mine. once you have it, you want to keep going at it for as long as you can. i suppose sgmp went through that process a year ago when they went across to different towns to hunt for talent. that must have been expensive in terms of time, energy and money. ever have a recruiter flyying around different towns to interview candidates, or a college admissions officer doing that with high-schoolers?

in terms of new singers, let's look at some numbers. in previous format, i am told we had one new singer a week. that made 52 new singers a year. actually less because they often had re-runs. what do we have now? well, they gave us 32 new singers all at once about 9 months ago after pruning them down from a 100 or so, and they in turn were selected from lakhs. i'd say the new format gave us better numbers.

now consider quality. with the old format, not all the singers were that good, often making the contest one-sided. with the new format, we have had singers from far-flung places get an opportunity to try out, folks who would have never been sent by their parents to Mumbai to audition or try out. to my mind, the new format brought us better quality because it had reputable MDs get involved in the process and look far-and-wide for those golden nuggets.

so why the feeling that the "quality" has declined. well, that's because of the perception that the show is now on performance, not singing. that perception is partly correct, but we did have performance aspects even earlier. performance comes in as soon as we see something, not just hear it. true, we seemed to have swung too far on the performance side of things. but still, there is nothing wrong with the quality of the singers. to my mind, they are as good as ever, probably better. they are just made to present the performance aspects during the shoot, because at the end of the day sgmp and Zee also have to make money.

finally, let's run a historical back-test. how many top name singers did the old format give us? apart from shreya, maybe another 5 or 10 that we remember. total of 10? over a period of 10 years? how many of the new singers are already household names? well, debo and vinit for sure. that's already 2 in less than a year.

i can similarly go on about viewership where we now have folks like me watching the show- some of us do like the variety-show aspect of the new format, as also the competitive nature of it. what did we have earlier? someone new every week. no opportunity to have invested our emotions on the new one. at the end of the day, however good or bad something is, it needs viewers or money to sustain it. as they say in the VC business, ideas need money to grow.

folks, it's often important to cut down and be a bit analytical before we get very critical.

I think it is because of competition in market increase.
Initially zeetv was alone in reallity show. Now they have to face sony , star etc. since sony wants to beat zee tv they add masala to it. So to be in competition zee also had to add masala to it

sure they've added masala. that's the viewer aspect of it- what viewers feel about old vs new. and we can address that too in this topic.

but my long post was specifically about the quality of the singers. to my mind, the new format gave us the hemas and rajeevs we might not have had otherwise. the mining operation has been a huge one and has drawn in singers from different backgrounds. would we rather have 52 new singers every year (not all of whom were that good) than the 32 who were culled from lakhs? what is the problem in having these best of the best presented to us as repeats through emet?

remember also that these 32 singers go across the age spectrum from 16 to 30. one net catching a lot of fish. even if we had sgmp go mining again, should we realistically expect them to find 32 "best" singers every year to present? they wld simply return with the same catch for the most part.

I am also looking for singing quality not actor. Though new format gave hemu but do not forget we lose sharib too. New format may not give best singer always. while old format sure will give good singer.

I will prefer old format.
