Hello my SaJan ki Deewanis!!!
I'm at ur service wid the 2nd chapter of my FF. Now this was the most difficult thing for me to write. As I told u that through dis FF of mine, I want to put forth my pov reg a misconception that I see pertaining to career and professional growth in academic institutions. I was quite confused as to whether I shud add dis or not. But then, I though it to be necessary, coz: a) it was one of the things that I had in my mind before writing this FF, and, b) it has a STRONG relevance wid my story.
Basically this chapter is all about Sam's decision of whether or not to join Excel. If I didn't add it, the linkage wudn't have developed. So, I though it necessary to highlight these issues, otherwise things wud seem haphazard and abrupt. I somehow have dis feeling that u all will find this chapter quite boring, and for that I apologize beforehand. But I promise, from next chapter onwards, there'll b no more boring stuff. And another promise, I'll update the 3rd chapter within a few days and will not keep u all waiting for a long time.
So, here comes the 2nd chapter wid a sincere hope that u all will forgive me, if u don't like it. Looking forward to ur replies, comments, suggestions and criticism.
Loads of love to all!!!
Ayesha

CHAPTER 2
Gunjan had an urgent piece of work, for which she had taken a half-day leave. It was something very rare, as being a complete professional, Gunjan hardly remained absent from work, or took any leaves. So, everyone in Excel knew that there was some serious issue for which she had to go.
Samrat, after regaining his senses, made his way to the Dean's office. The Dean's office clock struck 1 and exactly at that time Samrat knocked at his door. Dean knew that Samrat has always been punctual, but today, he broke his own record.
The Dean looked at him, gave him a smile, got up from his chair and said, "Welcome my boy. Aj to tum ne punctuality ko redefine ker dia hai. I'm impressed. I wish sab log tumhari terha time ki importance ko realize karein".
Samrat moved forward and went towards Dean's table. Both of them shook hands, and wid formal hi's and hello's Dean asked him to take a seat.
Before setting himself on the chair, Samrat looked around in the Dean's office. It was the same place where the Dean used to sit previously also. It was quite a big room. Dean's table was placed on one side. Every wall had a cabinet, shelf, or a rack. In most of them books and files were kept. Samrat took a quick glance on all the four walls of the room as if they all seemed familiar, and his eyes glued to one of them. That huge wall had cabinets and shelves and all were filled with trophies, medals, certificates and group photos of the winners of the various competitions, and also of the batches that had passed out from Excel.
Samrat, while walking towards that wall, "Sir, ye abhi tak apney rakhi hui hein?".
Dean new exactly wat Samrat was talking abt, so he replied, "Ye to Excel ka asset hein Samrat. Inhi ki wajah se to Excel ko itni popularity mili hai".
Samrat had now reached the wall, and he was looking at the trophies, medals and certificates in a way as if he had found some old possession which was very dear to him.
While looking at all those, he continued, "Wow Sir, ye wall to bilkul bhar gayi hai."
Dean replied, "Iska credit to mainly do logon ko jata hai".
Samrat asked, "Kisko Sir?"
Dean went to where Samrat was standing and answered, "Well, ek to tum ho. Is wall pe jitni trophies etc. hein, un mein se adhi to tum ne Excel ke liye jeeti thein. Woh wali trophy dekho, woh tumhari pehli trophy thi (pointing towards a trophy), or ye, (pointing towards another), ye tum ne All India Championship jeetney per lit hi".
Samrat had a big smile on his face, and constantly starting at those he said, "Or ye wali Sir, meri life ki sab se mushkil victory pe hum ne jeeti thi. We had literally lost the game and then suddenly everything turned around".
Dean interrupted, "Suddenly nahin Samrat, tum ne last minute pe jo presence of mind use ki, aur apni strategy change ki thi, uski wajah se hamari team jeeti thi". While saying this Dean patted his back in appreciation, and then continued, "Ye baki trophies, medals bhi tum aur tumhari team ne jeetey hein, ye wala science competition pe, ye wala medal charity and social services ke liye. Isiliye mein ne tumhein kaha ke adha credit tumhein jata hai, or baki ka adha Gunjan ko".
The name Gunjan rang a bell in Samrat's head, and he inquired, "Gunjan??? Gunjan kaun hai Sir?".
Dean moved towards his table and Samrat followed him.
Taking their respective seats, Dean said, "Gunjan is college ki sab se brilliant student thi. Excel ki pehli gold medalist (he said wid pride), aur shayad akhri bhi (said this in a worried tone), kyonke ajkal ke students ke toh kuch aur hi aims and ambitions hein. U know wat I mean na? Jis tarah tum ne Excel ko amazing victories aur fame dilwaya, usi tarha Gunjan ne bhi Excel ka naam khoob roshan kiya. Uska record break kerna kisi ke liye asaan nahin hai. Kabhi kabhi mein ye sochta hun ke agar tum dono na hotey, toh Excel ko shayad koi na janta, aj jo iski reputation hai, won a hoti, aur ye wall per ek adhi trophy tanha pari hoti".
As the Dean was praising Gunjan, Samrat didn't know why, there was a strange feeling arising within him. From his explanation, Samrat figured out that Gunjan was an ex-Excelian, and that too a brilliant one.
After this discussion, the Dean said, "Chalo Samrat, ab kaam ki baat kertey hein. Tum kal phone pe keh rahey the ke tum mujh se kuch discuss kerna chahtey ho."
"Ji Sir. Woh actually mein?"
Samrat had just begun to speak when the dean interrupted him, "Samrat, is se pehley ke tum kuch kaho, mein tumhein kuch batana chahta hun. Jantey ho, mein ne tumhein ye job offer kyon ki?"
Samrat who was listening patiently asked, "Kyon Sir?"
Dean continued, "Good question"
Samrat wondered that he didn't ask anything, Dean himself put this question. But then this was Dean's old habit, and Samrat knew abt it. So, somewhere he was happy to see that the Dean was still the same and had not changed (except for getting a bit old).
Dean rested both his arms on his table and his tone became slightly serious. "Dekho Samrat, mein samajh sakta hun ke tumharey mann mein is waqt bohat sawal honge. Mein ye bhi jaanta hun ke tum is job ko le ke uncomfortable feel ker rahey ho."
Samrat thought it was the right time to interrupt, coz otherwise, the Dean wud've discussed everything, except cater to his queries and issues. "Sir, uncomfortable ki baat nahin hai. Its just that ke mein ye nahin samajh pa raha ke ap ne mujhey hi ye job offer kyon ki. I mean to say Sir, mein ek Management Consultant hun. Meri work domain is se bilkul different hai. Aur University mein nature of job bohat different hota hai. Yahan per itney students ki life, unka career, unka future depend kerta hai. Aur mujhe is sab ka koi experience nahin hai. Ye toh bohat seasoned aur mature logon ka kaam hai. Mein ne toh abhi kuch arsa pehley apni studies complete ki hein aur uske baad apna business establish kiya hai. Mujhey universities, courses, academics ka bilkul idea nahin hai. Sir, ye bohat zyaada responsibility ka kaam hai. Mein ye sab kaise ker sakta hun, kaisey kerun ga Sir?" The more he was talking, thinking, the more and more signs of distress were appearing on his face.
Dean listened to Samrat carefully. When he stopped, Dean took a deep breath and in a concerned manner said, "Yehi to baat hain na Samrat. Her koi best institute se, university se, education lena chahta hai, takey uska career aur future secure ho jaye. But hum kabhi ye nahin sochtey ke ek university ke peechey kya aise factors hotey hein jo ussey acha aur successful banatey hein. Ye factors hotey hein us institute, us university ka staff, uski faculty, uski administration, jo apni vision se, apni wisdom se usey agey le ke jattey hein, wid the aim of given its students the best quality education. Mein sirf tumhari baat repeat nahin keh reha, but ye ek general phenomenon hai ke hum sab degree leney ke baad kisi achi multinational, ya kisi bari company mein highly lucrative job kerna chahtey hein. Mein ye nahin keh raha ke ye ghalat hai. But koi bhi ye nahin chahta ke woh kisi academic institution mein job karey. Uskeliye hum yehi sochtey hein ke koi serious, perhaku, bore, mature sa insaan hi ye job ker sakta hai, aur hum ye risk nahin le saktey. Lekin ab time change ho chukka hai Samrat, aur ye tum bhi jantey ho. Now university jobs r also highly paid, and the work environment has also changed a lot and has become more flexible".
Samrat was getting Dean's point, and he said, "Sir I'm sorry. Lagta hai apney meri baat ka bura maan liya. Believe me Sir, I was just putting my point of view across."
Dean interrupted, "Aisi koi baat nahin hai Samrat. Mein ne tumhari baat ka bilkul bhi bura nahin mana, bulkey mujhey khushi hai ke tumne ye sab mujh se share kiya. Dekho Samrat, I don't want to drag this discussion further. Simple aur straight baat ye hai ke hum Excel ko top pe le jana chahtey hein, aur iske liye humhein tumhari zaroorat hai. Ajkal ki generation, yani tum logo ki generation bohat fast hai, aur hum log tumhari terminology mein bohat old-fashioned hein. Tumhare paas world ki top university ki degree hai, experience hai (referring to the Uni in London from where he did his MBA). Mein chahta hun ke tumharey talent ko, tumharey experience ko Excel mein incorporate ker ke, hum Excel ko India ki baki sab universities se agey le jayein. Mein chahta hun ke tum Excel ke students ke liye ek role model bano, jo ke tum asani se bun saktey ho. Tum young ho, tumhari dynamic personality hai, isliye students zaroor tumharey saath achi rapport develop ker lengey. And don't think abt unnecessary formalities. Mujhey is se koi farak nahin parta ke tum kya pehentey ho. Mein tumharey liye is job ko burden nahin banana chahta. Agar tum jeans mein comfortable ho, toh no problem wid that. I just want the students to relate themselves wid u, aur uskeliye jitna tum unko confidence do ge, unkey saath link rakho ge, utna hi woh tumhari baat ko weightage denge. Mein chahta hun ke jo experience tum ne baahir gain kya hai, us se Excel ko, tumhari apni University ko benefit miley aur tunhari vision se hum international universities ke standards ko, policies ko modify aur refine ker ke Excel ke students ko competitive edge dilwaein."
Samrat, who had been listening quietly, was getting enthralled by the idea, and though, seeming to b a challenge, after listening to Dean's pov, he made up his mind to accept it. Just out of curiosity, he said, "But Sir?"
"No ifs and no buts Samrat. I've given u my mind. Now I won't force u, u take ur time. And one more thing, u have every right to decline this offer. I will not mind it at all. But if u join us, it will b our good luck" Dean told him.
Samrat had never run away from challenges and this time too he wanted to give it a try. So, he raised his head and firmly informed the Dean, "Sir, I don't know whether I'll b able to live upto ur expectations or not, but I've taken my decision to accept this offer. And Sir, it will not b Excel's good luck, infact, it will be my honor to work here and if I can guide and motivate even a single student to achieve his/her aim and have a sound career, it will be my biggest success, biggest achievement in life."
Dean was extremely happy wid Samrat's decision and was highly impressed by his determination. "So, welcome on board Samrat. Pleasure to have u as the Head of the Management Sciences Dept. at EU." Both stood and shook hands wid each other.
Samrat wid a spark in his eyes, (as if he had found an aim, a mission in his life), thanked the Dean, "Thank u very mush Sir, and I assure u that I'll put in my best effort to make Excel the leading academic institution."
Dean said, "That's like it. Aur tumhein worry kerney ki koi zaroorat nahin hai. Gunjan toh hai hi. Uskey hotey huey tumhein koi problem nahin hogi."
Gunjan, the name sounded familiar. Wasn't she the gold medalist student??? What is she doing here?? And what connection she will have wid me??? Numerous questions flashed in his mind.
He came out of his thoughts about Gunjan wid the Dean's words, "Samrat tumhari formal contract signing hum kal ker lenge. So, u can join us from tomorrow. Aur haan, kal hi mein tumhein baaki logon se introduce bhi kerwa donga."
Just as they were talking abt this, a faculty member knocked at the Dean's office door.
Prof: "Excuse me Sir".
Dean: "O, come on in Mr. Singh."
Prof: (Coming a bit forward), "Well Sir, I won't take much of ur time. I just came to see whether Gunjan is here or not."
Dean: "Gunjan, she had to go early today."
Prof: "O yes, I completely forgot. She told me abt that. Sorry for bothering u Sir."
Wid this the professor left, and as soon as he left the office, Dean whispred, "ek to Gunjan ke baghair kisi ka koi kaam nahin hota yahan pe."
First the professor and now the Dean left Samrat wondering again., "Akhir kaun hai ye Gunjan? Jab se yahan ayah hun, usi ka naam bar bar a raha hai. Aur mujhey uska naam sunke itna ajeeb kyon feel ho raha hai?? Chodo Gunja ko Samrat aur Dean ki baaton pe focus ker. Fazool ki batein mat soch."
While he was lost in his thoughts, he saw the Dean stand again, "So, all set Samrat? Thank u for accepting my offer. I'm looking forward to have u at Excel. So, c u tomorrow at 11 am."
Wid this, they both bid good bye to each other. Samrat was quite happy wid his decision and felt some inner satisfaction. He went back home all excited to start a new chapter of his life from the next day. Edited by ayesha_80 - 15 years ago
