Work till you drop

Aditi Pratap

Deepa Parab

Deepa Parab and Aditi Pratap continue to work despite severe illness. So does everyone else in the television industry

Sapana Patil Poojary

TV actors follow almost inhuman work schedules. Very often actors feel the pressure and collapse on the sets.

Recently Deepa Parab who plays the lead in Sony's Thodi Khusi Thode Gham, was added to the list of stressed out TV stars. She suffered from malaria last year and before she could recover fully, had a relapse. Despite this, she has been reporting for her shootings regularly. Parab says, "After I was diagnosed with malaria, I took rest for just two days, and resumed work from the third day. Not because I had recovered fully, but because I was required urgently to shoot for my scenes. There was no option for me bu to go to work. When scenes have to be canned, there is no alternative. When a serial goes on air, it has a bank of episodes, but that gets exhausted soon. Also, there are the routine requirements like 'improvement' shots, etc. Such things often happen at the last minute. The worst part is that, malaria leaves scars on your face. So I have to apply extra layers of make up to hide them."

Another actress who is braving shooting schedules despite being unwell is Aditi Pratap. Pratap who plays Aditi in Saat Phere, has been reporting to shoots with a cast around her ankle. "I have a severe problem with my knee," she explains. "I had damaged it while practising yoga. Now I can't bend it, nor can I walk up and down the stairs. I can't sit on the floor, neither can I wear high heels. My knee is so bad that it hurts all the time. To make matters worse, a doctor has told me that the actual problem stems from my ankle. Apparently, I had been walking around with a dislocated ankle and that created an indirect pressure on my knee. Now I have been told to wear a cast around my ankle which I will have to continue to wear for the next eight months. I can barely move, yet if the scene demands it (like one of the marriage sequences I shot for recently) I do sit on the floor, even though I know it will cause acute pain."

Why doesn't she take a break from work? "How can I refuse work," she asks. "TV actors relax only when they have no work. I know actors who have put off vacations, marriages and even honeymoons because of work."

Any time you read a book, and then came to a conclusion that it was a sheer waste of time?

Thodi Khushi Thode Gham

Sneha's entry in to Mansukhlal Shah's family, as the new daughter-in-law, has brought with it winds of change in the Shah household…

Sneha's refusal to be a part of Mansukhlal's book release function leads to a lot of disagreements and things go out of hand. Sneha's beliefs lead her not only to question Mansukhlal but also evoke reasoning amongst the women in the family. Dayaben, Sneha's docile mother-in-law chances upon one such instance where Sneha is talking to her 2 sisters-in-law as she tries to present her perspective to them.

Intervening in the dialogue, Dayaben presents 'The Shah household' rules for women to her! She tries to explain to Sneha the merit in keeping quiet and to simply follow the rules set by Mansukhlal like the others in the house. But Sneha doesn't really buy the philosophy…

Dayaben then throws a challenge to Sneha. She says within two months Sneha will see their point of view and become like them. However, if this does not happen she tells Sneha that the two daughters-in-law and herself will do whatever Sneha says. Can there be a bigger challenge than this for Sneha?

Who will win this challenge?

Will Sneha be able to convince the women by remaining unchanged?

Or will she become another… Mrs. Shah?

Stay tuned to Thodi Khushi Thode Gham - ek joint family, from every Monday - Thursday at 9:30 p.m. for some emotional drama and excitement in the coming week. This episode will be shown on May 22 at 9.30 p.m. only on Sony Entertainment Television.

Dekho mere doley sholey! Amit Jain. Pic: Sujit Jaiswal
How does one cover up a goof-up on television during a dance competition? Simple — if you have a good body, remove your jacket, swing it in the air and throw it to the audience.

Salman Khan is already famous for such bare-dare acts; this time, it was television actor Amit Jain's (Thodi Khushi Thode Gham) turn to pull off a similar stunt.

At a recent performance with fellow actor Kushal Punjabi on dance show Boogie Woogie, Amit forgot one of his choreographed steps. To cover up his mistake, the actor smartly removed his jacket and threw it to the audience at the set.

Describing what happened, Amit says, "I have developed a fascination for dancing and have even joined classes to better my skills. I was excited when I heard Kushal (Punjabi) was dancing with me. I admire his dance and it's a challenge to perform with him."

Diversion worked

The two performed on the title track of Dus Bahane. "We had choreographed our steps well in advance and knew exactly who was making what move. At the end, I missed one whole step. I didn't want anyone to know I had goofed up, so, to distract them, I removed my jacket and threw it off."

Known for his passion for working out and hitting the gym for hours, was the act aimed to show off his body? "If you have it, why not flaunt it? It was impromptu. When you watch it, you won't realise it was a cover-up," says Jain.

Tiff with Kushal?

Is it true that during the shooting of the episode, he had differences with Kushal over their performance? "It was a minor issue, where I asked him if we could give one more take. I got so carried away by our number that I wanted to give it another shot, to try and fine-tune some steps. But it never caused any problems between us. In fact, I was even going to offer him a vest that I had with me. We had an amazing time on the show."

Amit is all praise for Fame Gurukul winner Qazi Touqeer. "He's a fabulous person. Not only does he sing well, but he's a powerhouse performer."

Will other women dare to support Sneha?

Sneha's reasoning skills put Jyoti, the eldest daughter-in-law of Mansukhlal, in a dilemma

Sneha, the progressive bahu of Mansukhlal Shah takes the other women in the house head-on as they challenge her to try and change the patriarchal rules of the house. Sneha realises that her task is extremely difficult as the family members are petrified of Mansukhlal and dare not go against his wishes.

But an incident is about to start the wave of change in the house. Jyoti, the eldest bahu finds herself in a predicament when her father, Chandreshbhai gets pressurised by Mansukhlal to refuse a land deal with Atul Mehta, an arch rival of Mansukhlal. Jyoti watches her father getting subtle threats from Mansukhlal who uses her happiness in married life as a bargaining issue.

Jyoti is in a dilemma when Sneha makes her realise that her father is at a loss either way-if he went ahead and made the deal with Mansukhlal, then he would have to face Atul Mehta's fury; and if he declines Mansukhlal's offer, he would be upsetting her father-in-law.

This incident is surely an eye-opener for Jyoti. It has shaken her trust and belief in Mansukhlal. It sets her thinking about various occasions when her father-in-law got the better of her. Will Sneha's reasoning and questioning now make sense to Jyoti?

What will Jyoti do next? Will she be able to help her father? Will Jyoti slowly move to Sneha's side and dare to support her? Stay tuned to Thodi Khushi Thode Gham-Ek Joint Family, Monday-Thursday 9:30 pm.

Sony Entertainment Television to enter Capital Market
Saturday - Jun 17, 2006
Televisionpoint.com Correspondent
Sony Entertainment Television (SET), is exploring the possibilities to enter the capital market, as Sony Pictures Entertainment (SEP), which owns 61 per cent stake in SET, has invited investment bankers to give a presentation in Los Angeles.

Senior officials from investment banks DSP Merrill Lynch, Kotak Mahindra Capital Company, JM Morgan Stanley and others have flown to Los Angeles to give a presentation to SEP.

Although the final nuts and bolts have not been decided as of now and will depend upon the feedback that would be given by these investment bankers, the promoters are looking at market value of about Rs 4,500 Crores or $1 billion. If things go as per the initial plan, the proposed public issue will be a combination of fresh issues of equity shares and offer for sale from the existing shareholders, the issue size is expected to be in the vicinity of $300 million.

The combined shareholding of the Indian promoters is 31 per cent. Indian promoters include the Singapore based banker Rakesh Agarwal, World Media group director Sudesh Iyer, Shemaroo Films managing director Raman Maroo, MobiApps Holding's Jayesh Parekh and actor Jackie Shroff. Capital International owns the balance 8 per cent stake in the company.

SET is looking at divesting about 25 per cent stake in the market, but the actual size will depend upon the market condition. As of now Sony is looking at entering the market some time in September and October, it is learnt.

Interestingly, the biennial ICC Champions Trophy is scheduled to be held in India in October. SET had won the television rights for this ICC event. It may be recalled that Indian partners were at loggerheads with their US partners on the issue of corporate governance. The company has not been able to maintain a high growth trajectory and actually have not been able to improve its earnings despite such a sharp improvement in the advertisement market.

Capital International had acquired nearly 8 per cent stake in SET some time around 2000 at a valuation of $2 billion. The Indian partners were insisting for the listing of the company for quite some time so as to bring corporate governance and introduce transparency in the management of the company.

17 hours to a shoot

The Thodi Khushi Thode Gham cast fought torrential rains to reach the sets to shoot for the next day's episode of this Sony daily. In spite of a whole lot of shoots getting cancelled on Tuesday, the entire team, including Mansukhlal, who lives on Warden Road, made it to the sets in the distant suburbs. There's never a dull moment on the sets of TKTG, and the rains caused both excitement and tension, as each related stories of how they had reached the sets and whether they would meet the deadline. And shoot they did, for over 17 hours non-stop to get the episode ready

The bhabhi with a difference

After Hours Correspondent
Tuesday, July 11, 2006 20:28 IST

Actor Pranoti Pradhan plays an atypical Gujarati in 'Thodi Khushi Thode Gham'.

The camera is not new to her. Actor Pranoti Pradhan, who plays Bhavna bhabhi in 'Thodi Khushi Thode Gham' (Sony), began her tryst with it as a child actor in shows 'Mamaji', and 'Rishtey'. She even won the RAPA award for the best child actor.

Graduating to TV shows, Pranoti got her big break with Shobahna Desai Productions' family show 'Thodi …'. She elaborates on her character, "Bhavna is a gynaecologist married to Manoj (Kapil Soni). Though she's educated and wants to pursue her career, she gives in to father-in-law Masnukhlal's rules." She underlines the USP of her character saying, "Despite playing a Gujarati character, I display no typical mannerisms. There's a level-headed simplicity in Bhavna." Pranoti feels elated when people recognise her as 'Bhavna bhabhi' on the streets.

Though she's very grateful to Shobhana Desai Productions for this break, Pranoti is open to Balaji offers as well. She says, "My priority is 'Thodi…' but if Ektaa Kapoor notices something in an actor, she knows how to highlight it." Where films are concerned, Pranoti is firm about not doing 'bahen' roles.

The petite actor is also firm about the man she wants to marry and asserts, "He should be simple and genuine with no masks. As it is we are acting all day."
