Vandana Pathak
Vandana Pathak has been facing a peculiar problem. She's been falling like ninepins at home and on the sets! It has left her reeling with telltale marks, bruises and bumps. "I don't know what is happening to me. Onlookers may laugh, but it's really painful," she says.

Apparently, her fall from grace has become such a joke that she is constantly asked, "How come you did not have a mighty fall today?"

Vandana attributes her slipping dilemma to being pre-occupied. "There are so many things playing on my mind, that sometimes I don't know what I am doing. There is always this rush to get from one place to another, that I'm unaware of the reason that could be the cause of the fall."

Play time

After Instant Khichdi and Hum Paanch, Pathak featured in Feroz Bhagat's Gujarati play Balwant Ane Bali with Tiku Talsania. "We have been touring a lot with the play."

Vandana is now also part of the Sony daily, Thodi Khushi Thode Gham. "I made in an entry in the 100th episode on Thursday. I play Sharda, who is a good friend of Mansukhlal (Arvind Rathore). There is this mystery element about him, and my appearance fuels it."

Pathak claims that she had barely started shooting for Thodi Khushi… that she had a great fall there too. "There was water near the AC unit and I went flat out on it!"

Earlier she has fallen on the sets of Balwant Ane Babli. "There are several costume changes in it and I banged my head on the arch and fell flat on the floor. I have even fallen during the play, but Tikuji (Talsania) reacted quickly to stop me from making a spectacle in front of the audience!"

PRO-FILE: Deepa Parab

Nitin Joshi

You have seen her in innumerable commercials and in some popular shows, too, like Chhoti Ma, Meet, and Reth. She's been very active on the Marathi stage since her childhood.

That's Deepa Parab for you. Ever - smiling and talented.

Nowadays you see her in Sony's Thodi Khushi Thodi Gham. In this daily serial, she plays the youngest bahu in the family married to Pranav (Amit Jain). "My character's name is Sneha. She is a very practical girl and stands up for everything which is right. She is very straightforward and will tell you to your face if she thinks something is wrong.

"At the same time she is quite sentimental. A simple, emotional girl who loves her husband," explains Deepa. She reveals that people come up to her and tell her she's the ideal bahu in today's world. "My friends and family obviously like what I am doing with the role, although they keep teasing me saying I talk too much and I have a long tonque," she adds.

Deepa says she relates to the character of Sneha because like her, she is also practical and straightforward. "The only thing is, I am not too sentimental. Almost 80 per cent, we are alike."

Asked how the role came about, she recalls that one day she got a call from the show's producer, Shobana Desai and was given a briefing about the story and her character: "I loved it instantly," she says. Thodi Khushi… is one of the more popular shows on Sony. "It's going really well. What I specially like is that we don't work around the clock — we have time and space to ourselves

My Character & I

Deepa Parab plays Sneha in the Sony daily Thodi Khushi Thode Gham. Earlier seen in shows like Reth, Meet and Pratishodh, she talks about being Sneha….

Your character's biggest dilemma is how to make people think rationally.

Thodi Khushi Thode Gham is set in a typical Gujarati joint family system. There are sons, daughters, wives and children. Sneha is the youngest bahu.

She is extremely emotional but at the same time very practical. Though she makes a hue and cry when things go wrong, she is also concerned about keeping the family together.

The biggest stumbling block in Sneha's path is Mansukhlal Shah (Arvind Rathore)?

Yes, he is the patriarch of the house and Sneha's father-in-law. Though he is a leading industrialist, he is autocratic and dictatorial. He believes that only he and his sons are responsible for their success in business and status in society.

The women in the household are completely ignored. Sneha reminds him that the women in his family have also contributed in a big way to his success.

So there is a direct confrontation?

Sneha tries to knock sense in Mansukhlal but he refuses to budge. It becomes a battle between Mansukhlal and the men of the house versus Sneha and the women of the house.

At the moment Mansukhlal is missing in action.

The track has him kidnapped, so he is away from the scene. But to add to Sneha's dilemma is the fact that her husband Pranav (Amit Jain) is behaving likewise. There is also conflict between Sneha and her hubby as a result.

How believable is Sneha's character?

It is extremely real. In fact, several viewers, especially from Jain families, tell me that they identify with Sneha. What is shown is exactly the stuff unfolding in their homes.

The generation gap is a big issue. They want the girls to be educated and don't deny them anything, but ultimately they want them to sit at home.

Do you identify with Sneha?

There is 80 per cent of Sneha in Deepa. Given the situation, I would react similarly to Sneha.

Deepa to take the marital plunge

Deepa Parab of Reth fame who is presently seen in Thodi Kushi Thode Ghum is in a relationship and is likely to get married by the end of the year, mostly November. For that's what bumblebee tells me. The guy in the picture is Ankush Chaudhary, the Marathi actor who was seeing actor Resham Tipnis for six years (now this relationship has been called off).

For Deepa this is kind of a love-cum-arranged marriage. The buzz is that both the families are very happy and are looking forward to their wedded bliss.

It is believed that Deepa has a clean record but Ankush has sowed his wild oats and is probably ready to settle down now.

She is the bahu with a difference. Actor Deepa Parab who plays Sneha in 'Thodi Khushi Thode Gham' (Sony) is no servile daughter-in-law that soaps usually hinge upon. Rather, she is the new age bahu who combines convention with freedom. Incidentally, Deepa trained for acting at Vaman Kendriya and Satyadev Dubey's workshops. Having done Marathi theatre and films, Deepa won an award for the Marathi film 'Chakwa' last year. Deepa Parab plays Sneha in the Sony daily Thodi Khushi Thode Gham. how did you get into television industry?
When I was in college, I knew I wanted to become an actress. It was not a hobby. It was my passion. I started with theater then started doing TV commercials. And then, through all the auditions, I am on my way to become a big TV star.

What sort of portrayals do you personally prefer to do?
There are lots of shades in acting. A lot depends upon the mood and situation.

Tell us about the off screen Deepa Parab.
She's very bubbly - always laughing. I am an emotional person, mostly an introvert. I like to cook also. Deepa is full of life.

Among the roles that you've played, which is your favourite character and why?
My favourite is "Nupur" from Meeth . She's a very simple person, so you relate to that.

Do you identify with Sneha?
There is 80 per cent of Sneha in Deepa. Given the situation, I would react similarly to Sneha.

Her views on marriage?
Marriage is a beautiful institution but needs a lot of adjustments. I'd definitely want to continue working after marriage." She continues, "The idea is not to break up a family.

Rather, it's all about handling conflicts with patience and determination." The homely girl has global dreams. "I want to tour the world by ship. Mauritius, South Africa and Switzerland are my dream destinations.
