She is the bahu with a difference. Actor Deepa Parab who plays Sneha in 'Thodi Khushi Thode Gham' (Sony) is no servile daughter-in-law that soaps usually hinge upon. Rather, she is the new age bahu who combines convention with freedom. Incidentally, Deepa trained for acting at Vaman Kendriya and Satyadev Dubey's workshops. Having done Marathi theatre and films, Deepa won an award for the Marathi film 'Chakwa' last year. Deepa Parab plays Sneha in the Sony daily Thodi Khushi Thode Gham. Earlier seen in shows like Reth, Meet and Pratishodh, she talks about being Sneha…...
Your character's biggest dilemma is how to make people think rationally.
TThodi Khushi Thode Gham is set in a typical Gujarati joint family system. There are sons, daughters, wives and children. Sneha is the youngest bahu.
She is extremely emotional but at the same time very practical. Though she makes a hue and cry when things go wrong, she is also concerned about keeping the family together.
The biggest stumbling block in Sneha's path is Mansukhlal Shah (Arvind Rathore)?
Yes, he is the patriarch of the house and Sneha's father-in-law. Though he is a leading industrialist, he is autocratic and dictatorial. He believes that only he and his sons are responsible for their success in business and status in society.
The women in the household are completely ignored. Sneha reminds him that the women in his family have also contributed in a big way to his success.
So there is a direct confrontation?
Sneha tries to knock sense in Mansukhlal but he refuses to budge.
It becomes a battle between Mansukhlal and the men of the house versus Sneha and the women of the house.
How believable is Sneha's character?
It is extremely real. In fact, several viewers, especially from Jain families, tell me that they identify with Sneha.
What is shown is exactly the stuff unfolding in their homes. The generation gap is a big issue. They want the girls to be educated and don't deny them anything, but ultimately they want them to sit at home.
how did you get into television industry?
When I was in college, I knew I wanted to become an actress. It was not a hobby. It was my passion. I started with theater then started doing TV commercials. And then, through all the auditions, I am on my way to become a big TV star.
What sort of portrayals do you personally prefer to do?
There are lots of shades in acting. A lot depends upon the mood and situation.
Tell us about the off screen Deepa Parab.
She's very bubbly - always laughing. I am an emotional person, mostly an introvert. I like to cook also. Deepa is full of life.
Among the roles that you've played, which is your favourite character and why?
My favourite is "Nupur" from Meeth . She's a very simple person, so you relate to that.
Do you identify with Sneha?
There is 80 per cent of Sneha in Deepa. Given the situation, I would react similarly to Sneha.
Her views on marriage?
Marriage is a beautiful institution but needs a lot of adjustments. I'd definitely want to continue working after marriage." She continues, "The idea is not to break up a family.
Rather, it's all about handling conflicts with patience and determination." The homely girl has global dreams. "I want to tour the world by ship. Mauritius, South Africa and Switzerland are my dream destinations.
