Amit Jain in Thodi Khushi Thode Gham

Amit Jain is the main lead in Shobhana Desai's new show on Sony, Thodi Khushi Thode Ghum where he gets to play an obedient foreign returned lad.

Amit Jain: Playing a rich yet traditional guy in the show

Last seen in Ye Meri Life Hai as Ronit Gujral, the actor has his hands full with Thodi Khushi Thode Ghum.

"I play Pranav in the show. He has completed his studies from Harvard and belongs to a rich traditional family and even though he has studied abroad he has retained his values. His father means the world to him but there are certain things which he cannot talk to his family about, due to his respect for them. However he is very close to his uncle (played by Harish Patel). Neha (Deepa Parab) is my lady love in the show," says Amit, who completely relates himself to the character as he is also from a joint family.

Amit has a simple look in the show contrary to his funky look in Yeh Meri Life Hai.

Another familiar face on the show will be funnyman, Dilip Joshi who will be seen on the tube after Kudkudia House No.43 which was recently pulled off air! He'll play an event organizer, Popat Party in the show.

"I play an event organiser who organises anything which requires organisational skills. Popat is this funny guy who gives out funny lines for which you will have to wait and watch," says Dilip who is busy doing Gujrathi theatre and a host of advertisements.
The other actors in the show include Harish Patel and a host of other Gujrati theatre actors. The show is expected to go on air on 24 April on Sony.

Veteran actors get together on new Sony show

Yet another Gujarati family! Sony, currently in the throes of a revamp, will soon bring Thodi Khushi Thode Gham. The show is being produced by Shobhna Desai, the name behind the trendsetting Ek Mahal Ho Sapano Ka (which inspired the blockbuster Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi). The daily show goes on air from 24 April, at 9.30 pm.

Sejal Shah: " I was away from TV as I didn't come accross any meaty role"

TKTG, revolves around a typical Gujarati family. Shobhna Desai has managed to rope in many Gujarati stage actors who are well known in the tellydom, but were missing for a while.

Sejal Shah, who starred in Hasratein and Ek Mahal Ho Sapano Ka will be playing the character of Jyoti Shah. She did small time shows, and was not really satisfied and stayed away from TV for a year. "I was not getting meaty roles, so I thought of playing it cool. I have known Shobhna Desai for a very long time, so I took it up when she offered me this role." Sejal is married to Muni Jha, who plays Nimmo's father in Kyaa Hoga Nimmo Ka.

Kalpana Diwan, who can be recalled as the matriarch of Ek Mahal... will also be seen on this show. "I was doing only stage. I never plan, I just take up projects as and when they come my way. Shobhna's production is home to for me. She approached me about this, and I was more than happy to do it," says Kalpanaji.

The family portrait

A very well known face in the industry, Harish Patel makes a comeback with TKTG, after a long gap. "I was busy doing films and also was doing some work in Hollywood," says Patel, not a Gujarati himself, though he is often mistaken for one. About his character, he adds, "Well, I am an in between character. I play Bhagu Mama, the mediator between two generations. It's a central character filled with fun and thrill, I am certainly enjoying my comeback!"

Zankhana Sheth, Shobhna's sister, an actor herself, will too be seen as Dayaben. " Well, I was in the US, when Shobhna called me for this, and I took it up." This is not the first time she will be seen on television, she too was in Ek Mahal... playing Panna. " I have done around 40 plays and 35 Gujarati films," says Sheth. She is very excited to work with Kalpana Ben, as when she started her career, her first play was with her and before leaving for the US too, her last play was with her.

Arvind Rathod - the perfect patriarch

Arvind Rathod, big name in the world of Gujarati theatre, will also make his mark in the show. "He plays the strict, disciplinary and directorial patriarch of the family. He is very appreciative of his sons, but his attitude is different towards women," explains Sony's programming head Gursheel Walia.

Many other stage artistes will be a part of this huge Gujarati family. Nirmal Shah, who was visible in Sohail Khan's Maine Dil Tujhko Diya too will be seen here. "Well, I was into theatre and in the meantime did some 50 ads." He is a Gujarati too, and says that there is definitely a comfort level working with actors from the same community, "We all come from the same background and so we share a wavelength," he laughs.

Deepa Parab plays a headstrong girl, in love with Amit Jain

Along with these veteran actors, the serial will witness Amit Jain who was last seen in Ye Meri Life Hain on Sony and Deepa Parab, who starred in Zee's Reth.

The sets for the show put up at Charkop in suburban Mumbai, are a feast by themselves. With beautiful colour combinations used all through, the house consists of a massive living room, a striking dinning table, an ethnic white marbled mandir, all the trappings of plush urban life, combined with an ethnic ethos!

With more than half the star cast culled from Ek Mahal Ho Sapano Ka, is TKTG too planning a similar journey? Time should tell.

Thodi Khushi Thode Gham, on Sony
Tuesday - Apr 11, 2006
Televisionpoint.com Correspondent
Sony Entertainment Television is introducing Thodi Khushi Thode Gham – ek joint family. Thodi Kushi Thode Gham showcases the life of a patriach - Mansukhlal Shah who is a staunch believer that men are superior to women. It also showcases the life of Sneha – Mansukhlal's youngest daughter-in-law, who challenges his claims. Mansukhlal is among the leading industrialists in the country and his family consists of his mother, his wife, four sons, a daughter and two daughters-in-law. Mansukhlal credits himself and his sons not only for his success but also for the status and respect that he has in society and ignores the contribution of his wife and his two daughters-in-law.

When Mansukhlal writes his autobiography - it is only a reflection of his mind. He acknowledges his son's contributions, but doesn't even mention the existence of the women in the house. At this point, Sneha tells him what he has written is untrue and reminds him that the women in his family had contributed in no small measure to his success and that of his sons. This dispute leads to an argument and Mansukhlal finally challenges Sneha to prove her claim and she accepts the challenge, only with the help of all the females of the house. It is the struggle for truth between the ladies of the house led by Sneha, and the men of the house led by Mansukhlal Shah.

Commenting on the launch of the new show, N. P. Singh, COO, Sony Entertainment Television, said, "With the closure of Indian Idol 2, we wanted to give our viewers a completely new show that breaks away from reality."

Thodi Khushi Thode Gham depicts incidents that are true to life that are more relatable than reel life situations. The character of Sneha is played by Deepa Parab and Mansukhlal Shah is played by Arvind Rathod. The other cast are pouplar names in the television and theatre industry like, Amit Jain (Pranav Shah), Jhankana Desai, Harish Patel, Sejal Shah, Nirmal Shah and Kapil Soni.

Deepa also aspires to enter Bollywood

Star of the week: By Sneha Hazarika

The lead actress of Sony's forthcoming serial Thodi Khushi Thode Gham,
Deepa Parab talks about her latest show and Bollywood dreams.

The demure actress might be counted as a plain looker and one with a
non-glamorous image. But still, she has carved a niche for herself and
has stood out with her powerful performance in shows like Chhoti Maa,
Miit and the recently concluded Reth. Yes, we are talking about our very
own Deepa Parab who is all set to play a pivotal role in Sony's new daily
Thodi Khushi, Thode Gham as the female protagonist.

In today's let-me-beat-my-own-drum world, Deepa Parab has managed
to think otherwise and has always maintained a low profile. No wonder it
was difficult to track her down for an interview. Many a call followed by
text messages finally resulted in a chat session with the shy actress.

"My character's name is Sneha and she is a typical Indian girl," says Deepa
about her character in Thodi Khushi, Thode Gham. "Though she is a
traditional Indian girl, she is glamorous at the same time. She is
emotional but brave, practical and down to earth." She further adds that
the show is produced by Shobhana Desai of Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka fame
and is starting from April 24.

Reth on Zee TV had given Deepa a lot of exposure and more than
anything else, had made people notice that she is a good actor. "For
almost two years I was with Reth. The experience of playing a sober girl
was superb. But all characters I have played so far are very different from
each other, be it Reth, Miit or Chhoti Ma. All these characters were those
of Indian women but the graph was different," Deepa explains adding
that she's been quite choosy about her roles.

So what's so unique about her character this time around in TKTG? "Just
wait and watch. There are indeed great performances. And the feel has a
kind of subtleness about it. That's different,'' Deepa gives a brief but
confident answer.

Deepa has always been very lucky in getting well-known names as her
co-actors be it Vikas Bhalla and Hiten Tejwani in Miit or Ankur Nayyar and
Diwakar Pundir in Reth. What about this time? "Well, in Thodi Khushi,
Thode Gham Amit Jain has been cast opposite me. He has earlier done
Yeh Meri Life Hai. Apart from him there are a whole lot of veteran actors
from the Gujarati stage. I have shot for almost 20 days now and the
experience has been really good,'' she informs.

And her look? Is she going to play a plain jane as usual, or has a different
look (read K factory's heavy duty look) this time around? "It's a complete
Indian look. I will be shown wearing churidaar kameezes and once I am
married after three episodes, I will be wearing sarees. More than the
look, the difference will come across through the characterisation.'
What about her experience of the big screen? "I have acted in two Marathi
films so far, Kshyan directed by Mandar Devastali and Chakwa with Atul
Kulkarni for which I also got a State award. Apart from this, I have also
done TV commercials."

'From TV to films, to commercials, how has the journey been so far? "No,
it started with college competitions, then one-act plays, then
commercials followed by Marathi serials, films and finally Hindi serials,"
corrects the actor saying that her journey so far has been very satisfying
considering the fact that she doesn't have an acting background.
"However this (acting) has always been my calling. I have been ambitious
and have done it step by step."

So what next? "Definitely Hindi films. As an actor that's where you want to
be. I would like to do a semi-commercial role and win a lot of awards. I
don't have specific plans or offers, but I hope to break through," she says.
And what about her present passion — serials? Is she doing anything else
besides TKTG? "As of now I have not signed any other serial. One daily is
more than enough," quips Deepa.

Ask her which serial of hers she considers as being closest to her heart
and she says, "It's a difficult question. Every role has helped me grow and
has been dear to me. But the role I played in Marathi film Kshyan is the
one which I love the most."

Sony to air Thodi Khushi Thode Gham from April 24

Posted online: Friday, April 14, 2006 at 0000 hours IST

The last Shobana Desai serial on Sony was Alpviram. That was more than a decade ago. Now, the producer is coming back on Sony with a new family drama Thodi Khushi Thode Gham to be aired from April 24. To give you a brief on the storyline, Thodi... is about a patriarch, Mansukhlal Shah and a woman who challenges his claims of being superior to the fairer sex, Sneha. It is a struggle for truth between the ladies of the house led by Sneha, and the men of the house led by Mansukhlal Shah. The main thread of the story is supplemented with various sub-plots that promises to provide the audience with a sumptuous treat consisting of most of the tradition. Talking about her soap, Desai says, "it's a serial every woman will identify with. Our society is still male-dominated and women still face hurdles because of her sex." Doesn't the story of Thodi... remind you of films like Gharana and Khoobsoorat which had a strict disciplinarian in Shashikala and Dina Pathak respectively. It was about how their youngest daughters-in-law bring with them refreshing changes and laughter. But Desai insists that the story has never been told before, not in Gharana or in Khoobsoorat. "There the women were just strict, my serial is about Mansukhlal's strong beliefs. There is a reason for his peculiar stance which will be revealed eventually," she explains. Her other serial Mamata aired on Zee is about surrogate motherhood and how the protagonist Mamata gets accepted into the family. The serial according to Desai is doing well and is among the top five on the channel. She however laments that the serial is being sidelined and not given enough publicity, "yet it is doing well at No.4".

THODI KHUSHI THODE GHAM is the story of patriarch, Mansukhlal Shah and a woman who challenges his claims of being superior to the gentler sex, Sneha. Mansukhlal is one of the leading industrialists in the country whose family is a microcosm in itself consisting of his mother, his wife, four sons, a daughter, two daughters-in-law and several sundry relatives. He is assisted in the business by three of his four sons (the fourth one is still studying) and believes that he and his sons are wholly responsible not only for his success in the business but also for his status and respect in the society, ignoring the contribution of his wife and his daughters-in-law to their lives totally.

When he writes his autobiography, he credits his sons for everything but refuses to even acknowledge the existence of the women in the house. It is at this stage that his youngest daughter-in-law, Sneha tells him that the autobiography was untrue and reminds him that the women in his family had contributed in no small measure to his success and that of his sons. Mansukhlal disputes that and an argument takes place at the end of which, Mansukhlal challenges her to prove her claim and she accepts the challenge, only with the help of all the females of the house.

It is the struggle for truth between the ladies of the house led by Sneha, and the men of the house led by Mansukhlal Shah. The situations are achieved from the life itself, more relatable than the situations we see in some of the shows. Yet, the programme is not a dry rendition of a family battle. The main thread of the story is supplemented with various sub-plots that provide the audience with a sumptuous treat consisting of most of the tradition Nine Rasas including a liberal dose of humour.

In short, THODI KHUSHI THODE GHAM is a soap opera that is much more than just a soap opera. ITS LIFE ITSEL.

So, what's new on TV?

Thodi Khushi Thode Gham Most Indian joint families have given way to their smaller, nuclear counterparts. This is precisely what prompted noted Gujarati playwright Praveen Solanki to think of a serial highlighting the issues faced by a joint family in today's India. The story revolves around Mansukhlal, a successful businessman who lives with his family -- wife, sister, brother-in-law, four sons, a daughter and two daughters-in-law. Expectedly, Mansukhlal credits himself and his sons for the respect and position they maintain in society, while simply ignoring the women. But things change when Sneha, the third daughter-in-law, comes to the family. Brought up in a nuclear family where she was taught to adapt to changing times, Sneha decides to take up cudgels for the women, and challenges Mansukhlal's autocratic behaviour. TKTG has an impressive cast, led by noted Gujarati actor Arvind Rathod in the role of Mansukhlal. Deepa Parab plays Sneha. The serial also marks the comeback of Amit Jain, who shot to fame with his portrayal of Ronit in Sony's Yeh Meri Life Hai.

TKTG began this monday and airs at 9.30 pm, Monday to Thursday, on Sony Entertainment Television.

Harish Patel is Friends with Ross
By: Chaitanya Padukone
April 26, 2006

Harish Patel, David Schwimmer and Gautam (Harish's son) outside David's mansion gate in Los Angeles
Actor Harish Patel, who recently returned from Los Angeles after shooting for his cross-over American serial Nearly Nirvaana, directed by David Schwimmer (who plays Ross in hit sitcom, Friends) makes his directorial debut with an episode of Manju Singh's ongoing serial Aur Ek Kahani, on DD-I, to be telecast on May 1.

Gracious host

In LA, Patel literally became "Friends" with Schwimmer and was even invited to a party at his sprawling mansion. "The interiors of his mansion had a 1920s, vintage look, but it was luxurious and his huge entrance door had Indian-temple-like sculpted patterns. He also had a huge library, including books on Indian culture and traditions.

Shedding his star-aura, David personally cooked marinated chicken and fish for us, since we were not ham-eaters. It was an out-of-this world experience," recalls Patel wearing a euphoric expression.

In Nearly Nirvaana, shot in California, the actor is cast as an NRI doctor. "It was my privilege to get to shoot at Universal Studios in LA, and to work under Schwimmer.

The pilot episodes are ready. As soon as they are allocated a seasonal slot, they will touch base with me for regular shoots," informs Patel, whose rebel son in Nirvaana is played by actor Kal Penn (of American Desi fame).

What was his experience working with "Ross"? "When I first met David as a director, I had no clue he was such a popular foreign actor. It was only later, that my son, budding actor Gautam (who accompanied me to LA) told me about his worldwide fame."

Taking on Matthau

Wasn't Harish almost disqualified in the Nirvaana screen test, for the Punjabi character of Dr Arjun Mehta, because he didn't have an American accent?

"That was the impression the selection panel created initially; they did not speak to me after the auditions. They wanted me to enact an Indian version of the late Hollywood actor Walter Matthau, but I had the audacity to suggest that it would be more effective if I did it my own way," remembers Harish.

Harish with Anuradha in
Aur Ek Kahani
"Later, David told me they had appreciated my outspoken nature and they were impressed with my scenes. Instead of using canned laughter, they had live audiences reacting to our punch lines. Fortunately, in my case, they all burst into peals of laughter and David came and hugged me after the shots were canned."

Direction first

Funster Patel will also be seen in Sony soap, Thodi Khushi Thoda Gham, where he plays the roly-poly "bachelor Bhaggumama — the mediator".

What led him to direction? "It was Manju who insisted I direct this one-off Kahani episode, where I cast myself as the central character of an honest sarkari employee.

After putting in over 30 years of service, he gets an official memo, a summons to meet his higher authorities. This causes him mental agony at home and in office. That's why the episode is called Chitthi Ke Maarfat.

Earlier, I have directed many plays," says Harish, who has acted in over 150 Hindi movies, including the recent Pyaar Mein Twist.

9/10 for 9 se 10

It's after a long while that fingers willingly turn to the button that denotes Sony on the remote control.Starting last Monday, the channel has launched (and vigorously promoted) its all new 9 to 10 block, and for once, the effort seems to have paid off.

Unlike its chest thumping relaunch of the Shukravaar effort, which has been a damp squib for all practical purposes.

But 9 se 10 in its first week at least, has been engaging, intriguing and appealing. Ace director Lekh Tandon's return to the small screen after a long gap should be worth the wait. The story of Rusty, a pucca

Londener who's plagued by feelings of being connected to India, and her eventual return to her roots, has all the ingredients of strong soap. The lather's just catching on. The first week's depiction of her life in London has been fair enough, although elements like Rusty's obvioulsy blonde wig and her contrived Brit accent jar on the nerves at times.

What holds one to the plot is the heart tugging, often just slipping out of the fingers recollections she has of her motherland, and her effort to try and understand their meaning. The supporting cast, made up to look like Brits, seem to try too hard to act like Brits too. The ensuing weeks, with the entry of veterans like Kanwaljeet entering the plot now, the story should pick up pace. But kudos to Indian television

for venturing out of the ordinary and experimenting with an offbeat theme. Perhaps it is filmmaker Tandon's experience with the canvas of the larger screen that has prompted him to wield similar strokes on television.

The latter half of 9 se 10 is no experimentation, but is enough to give loyal fans of the long dead Ek Mahal Ho Sapano Ka, reason to rejoice. For all practical

purposes, Thodi Khushi Thode Gham, is a sequel to Ek Mahal...with the patriarch replaced. But while Ek Mahal... dealt lovingly with the issues of each son and sibling lovingly, TKTG, one suspects will dwell more lovingly with protagonist Sneha and the changes she brings into the strongly patriarchal household.

Shobhna Desai doesn't have the talents of Aatish Kapadia and Vipul Shah, who made Ek Mahal... what it was in the 1990s, but her writers are making a competent job of creating characters that are believable, lovable. The actors, most of whom have been culled from the Ek Mahal... lot are veteran theatre people, to whom acting comes easy. But they could go easy on the Gujju accent...the telly is threatening to be flooded with the Ba, Bahoo, Baby kind of failies, which expect the viewer to understand the relationships between the Phai-ba and the Moti-ben with relative ease!

Of course, as realistic as Shobhna Desai may have tried to get, her bahus continue to be bedecked even in the kitchen, and made up even when they sit down for an afternoon of gossip. Though of course, she hasn't paid much attention to the one thing that was loved by millions about Ek Mahal... - its title track!

With a promising afternoon band in its kitty, Sony seems to have thought out its post Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin strategy well. Later, too, we hear, will be the one hour daily late night slots that will herald even stronger programming.

If this is to be year of Sony's resurgence, 9 se 10 has set the pace well for it. We can't give it a complete 1o out of 10, but yes, 9 of 10 should fit quite well.
