PART V ... Staging
As the next evening approaches ... Charu is driving her mother mad ..."Oh no mummy! Not a nightgown again ... why can't I dress up in a pretty churidhar ... You know Gokul is coming to spend time with me and I want to look pretty for him ... "
Charu's mother sighs "
Charu ... this is a hospital and the doctors will keep coming and going ... so you have to dress up in the nightgown ... I tell you what ... I will dress up your hair prettily and maybe even allow you to wear light makeup ... and even your dangling earrings ... what do you say?"
Charu nods her head happily and gives in gracefully ... quickly her mother dresses her up ... braids her thick long hair ... and gives Charu a hand mirror and her makeup set and waits patiently for Charu to apply kajal and a light lipstick ... and finally she wears her dangling earrings ...
At last Charu is satisfied with her appearance ..."Mummy pass me the jasmine flowers ... " ... Charu's mother picks up the flowers and pins it neatly in Charu's braid ... Charu picks up a strand of jasmine on one side and brings it close to her nose and breathes in deeply "Mmm what a divine smell ... thank you Mummy... " Charu's mother smiles and pats her head tenderly ...
Charu's father is waiting outside ... he is feeling very anxious ... wondering what plan Dr.Gokul had thought of ... and how it was going to work ... suddenly he hears the sound of footfall ... and turns to see who is approaching ...
Yes! At last! It is Dr. Gokul and he has a big bag in his hand ... Charu's father quickly walks forward to meet him ... Pointing to the bag in Gokul's hand he asks nervously "What have you brought in the bag Gokul?" ...
Gokul replies, "
Oh nothing much uncle ... just some chocolate and a small gift for Charu ..."
"What about the album ... you said that Charu had specifically asked you to bring the album ... isn't she going to wonder why you haven't brought that with you?" asks Charu's father.
Before Gokul can reply ... the door to Charu's room opens and Charu's mother pokes her head out ... "
Oh hello Gokul! Charu said that she could hear your voice and asked me to take a look outside and sure enough here you are!! Charu is anxiously waiting to see you ... why don't you come in?"
Gokul replies "
Yes of course aunty!" and eagerly strides into the room followed closely by Charu's father ... Charu's face lights up when she sees Gokul approaching ... then she pouts and asks "Why are you so late Gokul? I have been waiting for you for the past two hours ... "
Gokul laughs and tells her "
Well you know that I have now come in the role of your fiance ... so I have to act like one ... accordingly I went shopping and got some gifts for you ... here you are!" ...
Gokul pulls out a bar of DairyMilk silk chocolate with roasted almonds and a small gift wrapped box from the bag and hands them over to Charu ...
Charu squeals in delight and grabs her gifts ... then she smiles shyly and says that this is her favourite chocolate ... she opens the chocolate foil and takes a small bite ... holding the chocolate bar in one hand ...
Next she clumsily unwraps the small box with her other hand and lifts out a box of dazzling diamond earrings ... she looks up at Gokul lovingly ... Gokul sees her eyes sparkling with unshed tears ... Gokul gets almost drowned in her big expressive eyes ...
Then he realizes where he is and swallows clearing his throat ... he turns to look at Charu's parents ... Charu's father and mother smile at their daughter's enthusiasm and give their nod of approval to Gokul ... then quickly they bid them goodbye and turn towards the door ...
Licking her chocolaty finger tips ... Charu asks chirpily "
Gokul I am still waiting for the gift I asked you to bring ... our engagement album."
Charu's words halt her parents before they could reach the doorway ... they slowly turn around and stand without motion ... waiting with bated breaths for Gokul's reply ... every eye is turned towards Gokul ... Gokul feels as though he is in the middle of a huge spotlight ...
Gokul smiles assuredly at Charu ... gives her a tissue to wipe her fingers and then ... pulls out a yellow album from his bag ...
Charu's parents are dazed as they recognize the album ... Charu's father moves forward quickly to check Gokul from giving the album to Charu ... "Oh no Gokul! What are you doing?" cries out Charu's father tensely ...
Charu turns her head to stare at her father ... wondering why he was sounding
so upset ...
