Anurag transformed from a stranger to a regular visitor of my life. Shekhar uncle, who was earlier reluctant to invite any of his friends over to the apartment, wholeheartedly invited Anurag for dinners and sometimes Anurag himself barged in to our place without any prior notice or invitation.

We even bump into each other, every morning in the apartment elevator when I was on my way to my regular sobbing session at the park. He walks along with me and we part ways near the park gate. I wasn't sure where he goes at that time of the day and I wasn't curious to find out as well. I always regarded him as just another person, little less than an acquaintance and was not sure if I could call him a 'friend' yet. But one fine day he proved me wrong. He proved that he was more than just an acquaintance and he has turned in to a dear friend, whom I can trust.

It was a gloomy, dull Monday morning and I was on my way to the park as usual and one unusual thing happened when I didn't bump into Anurag that morning. But as I reached the park, I saw him seated on the bench; my bench, the bench I regularly use.

Anurag: You're late Colombo girl

Taani: What are you doing here?

Anurag: This weather is so depressing so I thought I shouldn't waste it alone. Would you like to join me for a coffee?

Taani: Coffee?

Anurag: Please sirf ek coffee. I promise you it'll be the best coffee you'll ever taste

He begged me to join him for a coffee and exaggerated his plea by going down on his knees. I on the other hand stood hopelessly with an embarrassing face as his silly behavior caught attention of some onlookers. I didn't have a choice but to say 'YES'. However, he won in the end and took me to a coffee shop named 'Central Perk' which was few blocks across the street. The place was a cozy joint and reminded me of the coffee shop in 'Friends' an American show I used to watch.

Taani: only one coffee and that's it

Anurag: deal. Mark my words, you'll fall in love with this coffee

Taani: we'll see

No sooner we entered, a young chivalrously looking boy, wearing a dark blue T-shirt and a cap walked in to our table and greeted us with a smile.

"Good morning"

Anurag: Hey Robindo!!! What's up brother?

Anurag:
Taani, this is my good friend Robindo and Robindo, this is Taani

Robindo:
nice to meet you Miss Taani

Taani:
nice to meet you too Robindo and please don't call me 'Miss'. Sirf Taani would do

Anurag:
She's a friend Robindo, no need to call her Miss

Robindo:
ok Sir

Anurag:
Arre yar, when will you ever stop calling me Sir?? Kitni baar kaha hai tumse, not to call me sir? I've a name dost

Robindo:
sorry Anurag babu

Anurag:
babu?? who's babu?

Robindo:
I mean sirf Anurag

Three of us laughed at the same time.

Anurag:
Robbindo, please bring us two of your 'Robindo special coffee. But make sure to use your magic cuz I had a tough time convincing this lady to come here, so don't let me down cuz I've a rep to protect

Robindo:
don't worry Anurag. I'll be right back

Robindo strolled back to the kitchen and Anurag gave him a pat on his back and started the conversation.

Anurag:
Robindo is a brave kid. He has been through some tough time. Tumhe patha hai, Taani he lost his parents when he was 10 and he was sent to an orphanage since nobody took his custody. He never gave up and studied extremely hard and earned himself a scholarship to enter college. Now he's working here part time and studying for his Degree. I've read and heard of some great heroes who've battled tragedies to succeed but this kid is unbelievable. I can confidently say that one day he'll become a success story and a hope for millions of orphans who don't have families or loved ones.

Anurag had tears in his eyes as he looked behind at Robindo who was busy preparing our coffee. I've never seen this side of Anurag during our short companionship. The impression I had on him was quite the opposite. He was a fun, chirpy guy who was always happy and made jokes but his emotional side surely took me by surprise.

Robindo served us coffee in two black colored mugs. The irresistible smell of the coffee gripped my heart and ripped off my taste buds. I was reckless to take a zip and almost burnt my tongue instead. OMG Anurag was right!! It was indeed the best coffee in the world. I didn't open my eyes until I gulped the first few zips of lip smacking, tongue sizzling, super delicious Robindo special coffee.

As I opened my eyes I saw a beaming Robindo standing next to me and Anurag winked with an 'I said so' nodd.

Robindo:
How's the coffee Taani?

Anurag:
Amazing ha?

Taani:
Yes. Anurag, you are right. I've never tasted such delicious coffee anywhere. Thank you Robindo!!

Robindo:
my pleasure Taani. You guys enjoy the coffee and I'll see you later

Robindo walked back to the counter to help another customer. Anurag smiled and continued the conversation from where it was left.

Anurag:
you know Taani, I always believe that people who struggle to overcome misery are the bravest people on this earth. One should never give up during difficult times. There's always a light at the end of a tunnel, you just have to go find it.

I looked at my coffee mug and coffee seemed to get blurred from my vision as I got lost in my thoughts. Anurag's words swam through my mind. They echoed. 'There's always a light at the end of a tunnel, you just have to go find it'. The phrase was very familiar. I sighed and Anurag looked at me.

Taani:
my dad used to say that

Anurag:
what?

Taani:
there's a light at the end of a tunnel

He didn't respond to what I said and instead he looked directly into my eyes. I felt a heavy heart. My right hand let go of the coffee mug and reached my chest. The heaviness was getting heavier by the second. Words were brawling in my tongue to slip through and I tried my best not to let them go out. Anurag's eyes didn't move away from mine and a certain assurance lay upon them. My efforts were fruitless and words started storming out from my mouth.

Taani:
we were a perfect family. Mom used to nag me so much for the smallest thing. She wanted the kitchen to be sprinkle clean. She hated it when I tried to mess it around. Whenever she scolded me, dad used to take my side. He said mom was a silly neat freak who loves the kitchen more than us. One careless truck driver destroyed my family. It's been 5 months since they've died. 5 months. I've been walking in the tunnel for 5 months. But I still couldn't find the light. There's no freaking light, only darkness.

Tears poured from my eyes.

Anurag:
Taani...

Anurag's hands reached mine. He held my hands tightly and wiped off my tears. But I couldn't stop the tears and ended up crying.

Taani:
I really miss them Anurag, I really do. I remember them every single second of my life. It's too difficult to let go. I wish I was in the car instead of them that night. I was all alone at home while they were in struggling to live. I couldn't do anything to help them.

Anurag dragged his chair closer to mine and slowly swayed my head to his shoulder. I rested my head and cried with closed eyes covered by my hands. It was the first time I talked about my parents since they death. I cried numerous times in the past but never uttered a word about them to anybody, not even to my best friends or my uncle. However, as I wept on Anurag's shoulder, the weight of my heart drifted away slowly and gradually. And I felt relieved.

I wasn't sure how long I was crying but the moment I realized what was happening, I quickly opened my. Sensing the awkwardness, I instantly pulled myself away from him and he did the same. We both paused for few seconds and he offered me his handkerchief and I took it and wiped my tears.

Anurag:
are you ok?

Taani:
yeah I'm fine

Anurag:
good. Er... You haven't finished your coffee yet

Taani:
no it's ok

Anurag:
no It's not ok. Why don't you finish your coffee while I go and pay the bill?

Taani:
wait let me give you my share

Anurag:
excuse me? I invited you for the coffee, so technically the bill is mine

Taani:
but..

Anurag:
well if you're feeling really bad, why don't you pay it the next time?

Taani:
next time?

Anurag:
Please don't tell me you're not coming here again?

He winked and smiled cheerfully and walked towards the cashier counter. He came back to the table accompanied by Robindo, who looked very happy and excited.

Robindo:
Taani, hope you enjoyed the coffee?

Taani:
yes I did. It was really good

Robindo:
so does that mean you'll be one of my regular customers in the future?

Anurag:
koi shak??

Anurag put his hand over Robindo's shoulder. I smiled with both of them and guessed that Robindo was waiting for a positive response from my end.

Taani:
sure I will

Anurag: maine kya kahatha dost? Teek kahathana?? Give me high five brother

We left the coffee shop and Anurag walked me towards the apartment.

Anurag:
so I'll see you later then

Taani:
ok

He waited till I got inside and went back towards the elevator but I stopped him mid way.

Taani:
Anurag!!

He stopped walking and looked back at me with a question mark on his face.

Taani:
thank you

Anurag:
kis liye?

Taani:
for everything

Anurag:
what everything?

Taani:
everything means everything. Bye

Anurag:
Colombo Girl, never say bye. Kabhi alvida na kehna. Hum hai rahi pyaar ke, phir milenge, chalte chalte.

I burst out laughing at the door. He also joined the laugh and stood at the hallway, few meters far from our apartment.

Taani:
bye bye

Anurag:
kuch kaha kya??

He looked up and down as if he was searching something in the hallway.

Taani:
I mean, phir milenge chalte chalte

Anurag turned his head with a smile and I smiled back at him.

Anurag:
kya baath, kya baath, kya baath

He waved at me and walked towards the elevator. I waited by the door as he disappeared from the hallway. It was the best laugh I had after a long time. I felt cheerful and relieved and in other words, I was some what happy. It took 5 long months for me to feel that emotion again and Anurag did have an affect in my transformation. And yes, I upgraded him from just an acquaintance to a dear friend whom I can always rely on.
