CHAPTER THREE

Stepping out of the plane, Kunj took in the familiarity of his homeland. His flight had been long and tiring but he dismissed it all because he was going to be home in a few moments, and that thought itself was enough to freshen his mood. After completing all the formalities, he exited the airport to find a driver waiting for him. He gave everyone at home clear instructions that no one was to come to receive him. After all, it's more fun when it's a surprise and unexpected right? He had told his parents that he would be arriving later at night so he couldn't wait to see their reactions when he turns up for lunch. Putting his shades back on, he slides into the car and heads off towards Sarna house... his house.

Kunj knew that the preparations for his arrival would probably start a little later since they weren't expecting him till evening and he was glad he reached before then because quite frankly, he didn't want that kind of attention. He just wanted to be alone with his family after all this time. As he walked through the gates, he gave his greetings to the servants along with a strict warning that no one is to know that he is back, yet anyway. He slyly peeked through the door to see if the coast was clear which it was. Good, he thought, this meant that everyone must be at the dining table and so he sneakily made his way towards the back of the kitchen.

Like he expected, all the family members were gathered around the table discussing his return. Kunj couldn't help the giggle that escaped him because they were all so engrossed in surprising him that no one had noticed him climb through the kitchen window. He stood with his back to the wall so that he was shielded from their view and relished in the conversation about him.

"Lekin Bebe, why don't we just throw a grand party instead? After all, our Kunj is coming back, the whole of Amritsar should know" argued Anand who couldn't understand why Bebe wanted a small family get together rather than a lavish Sarna style banquet. "Because Kunj would hate it, that's why, he's come home after a full 6 months, he'll want to spend time with his family, all of us, he will not care if the people of Amritsar are here to greet him or not" Bebe fired back. Kunj smiled because if anyone knew his inner depths, it was his Bebe. "Bebe is right Anand, this is Kunj we're talking about. I've lived 6 years in this house and even I know that about him! Kaise bade bhai ho tum?" Nikki, Anand's wife, pointed out. Anand sighed, "haan par..." The discussions became louder and heated and no one seemed to be agreeing on anything. Plans and ideas were floating around and that's where they stayed, afloat. Right, Kunj thought to himself, it's time. He grabbed an apple from the fruit basket nearby and decided to finally make his most awaited entry.

"Kya hua? Why are you all arguing?" He asked casually as he walked towards the dining table taking a bite from his apple. He wasn't surprised to see that everyone just carried on arguing, his family loved their daily dose of bickering. "Look na Kunj, no one is agreeing that my idea is the best out of all of them" Anand said glancing at his brother briefly before giving his full attention back to Bebe. Silence fell. Everyone's faces turned at exactly the same time to witness a huge smile form across Kunj's face. "KUNJ!?" exclaimed Usha who had sprang from her chair and engulfed her darling son into a bone-crushing hug. Kunj returned his mother's affection and took her blessings before greeting the other members of his crazy family. "What bhai? This is not done! Yaha hum apko surprise dene ki planning kar rahe hai aur aap hai ki..." Chinki folded her arms across her chest to emphasise her annoyance. Kunj laughed at his little sister's antics, it was these little things that he missed the most during his time abroad. It didn't take him long to placate her because when the going gets tough, you just tickle your way out of it. The Sarna house was soon filled with shrieks of laughter as Kunj attacked Chinki. The elders of the family smiled contently because the livelihood of their household was finally back. Their Kunj was finally back.

"Hayo Rabba, sab teekh hai na, why is everyone shouting?" came a voice from the door. Kunj couldn't see the person because his vision was blocked by his father, tauji and Bebe but he didn't need to see to recognise who that voice belonged to. "Leela Aunty" Kunj walked up to her and touched her feet. "Kunj? Tu kab aya? You were going to come home later na?" She asked confused but glad because her son was back. Kunj had always seen Leela as a second mother and Leela took Kunj to be her son. Though God had blessed Leela with two beautiful daughters, her wish for a son came true the day Kunj walked through her door at the mere age of 6. "What is this Kunj? How many times have I told you that you don't need to touch my feet all the time, my blessings are always with you" she said displaying her slight annoyance which vanished as soon as Kunj wrapped his arms around her into a hug. "I missed you so much girlfriend" he said breaking away from the hug. She laughed as she playfully hit his cheek, "bada ho gaya lekin badmaashi nahin gayi ab tak." Kunj put his arm around her shoulder, "What to do girlfriend? Aap ho hi itni khoobsurat" He winked as he walked her over to the dining table where the rest of the family had begun to seat themselves again.

Eventually, plans of throwing a party for Kunj's return were cancelled. Thank God. The next couple of hours were spent with everyone taking turns to ask Kunj about his studies and future plans whilst he asked about the latest happenings at home and in Amritsar. He was pleased to be back in the presence of his family but he couldn't help the disappointment he felt knowing that Twinkle still hadn't come to meet him. Chinki had informed him that she accidentally let it slip to Twinkle that he was coming home today; there went his idea of a surprise. He was annoyed at first but after her numerous apologies, he let it go. After all, how long could he have stayed angry at his little sis? He looked around the room at everyone laughing and chatting away. It wasn't fair. Twinkle should've been here to enjoy this reunion too. That's it. He had had enough. He knew she was being stubborn but he really missed his best friend these past months and if he has to lose a challenge just to see her face or hear her voice again, he accepts. With that, he sprung up from the sofa he was comfortably seated on. Everyone looked at him with questioning eyes, "kya hua puttar? Kuch chahiye?" Bebe asked. "Wish me luck everyone" he replied stretching his arms. He saw the look of confusion on everyone's face and let out a deep breath, "Twinkle se milne jaa raha hoon." There was silence. No one ever got involved between Kunj and Twinkle but they were all pretty aware of what conspired between the two and it didn't take a genius to know that this could end badly, really badly. It was Chinki who broke the silence as she walked up to Kunj, "I call shotgun on your Macbook and Ipod," Kunj looked at her taken aback by her comment "what?" Chinki braced her brother by his shoulders... "She is going to murder you."
