CHAPTER ONE
Twinkle awoke to the deafening ringtone of her phone in the morning. She let out an exasperated sigh, cursing herself for not putting that thing on silent before falling asleep. She pulled the sheets down and reached over to see the name flashing across the screen - CHINKI. Seriously? Twinkle thought to herself, her best friend knew better than to call her this early in the morning. She accepted the call and let shots fire.
"Seriously yaar Chinki, is this a time to call someone? You of all people should know that I am most definitely sleeping and won't be awake for another 3 hours" She could hear Chinki giggling on the other end of the line. "It's not funny Chinki," she let out before burying herself under her satin sheets again.
"Forgive me meri maa, I just rang to tell you that I'm in Amritsar, I arrived this morning to surprise you all" Chinki defended herself. Twinkle threw her covers away from herself "WHAT?" And you're telling me now?! Ok wait, I'm coming" She ended the call and leaped out of bed to get ready.
It had been so long since Twinkle has seen Chinki, they were the best of friends. Friends before Twinkle could even remember. Chinki used to live next door, but 2 years ago, she and her father moved to Delhi after graduation due to better job prospects. Since then, they've both constantly spoken on the phone but Twinkle has only seen Chinki a few times especially because she hardly ever has the time to go up to Delhi herself. Checking herself in the mirror one last time, Twinkle readjusts her dupatta and heads next door... to Sarna House.
As far as Twinkle remembers, the Sarna's have always been a very important part of her life. Chinki Sarna was the daughter of Surjeet Sarna. Her mother had passed away at a very young age but she has always received that maternal affection from Bebe. Bebe was the heart of the Sarna household in the literal sense. She had never gotten married because the responsibility of bringing up her two younger brothers fell upon her at a young age and so she has dedicated her entire life to keeping her family together and happy. Twinkle loved Bebe and Bebe also reciprocated those feelings, she absolutely adored Twinkle! Manohar Sarna, the youngest brother, was also very fond of Twinkle, he was the business partner and a very good friend of her father. After her father passed away, the Sarna's supported her mother a lot, especially since Twinkle was merely an infant. It was too bad that Usha, Manohar's wife, didn't feel the same. Till date, Twinkle has never understood the reason for the hostility between them but she never takes it to heart. After all, if it wasn't for Usha, Kunj would never have existed...
Kunj Sarna. How does one describe Kunj Sarna? He's annoying and arrogant and over-confident and downright stupid. Fine, he's been blessed with a beautiful face and physique but that doesn't mean that HE has to know that! Girls fall for him before you can even say his name and it infuriates Twinkle that he relishes in that knowing. Ugh. But she can't help but agree that he's also the most caring, thoughtful and, not to mention, her best friend in the whole world. It's weird because Twinkle always saw Chinki as her best friend until she came across Kunj. They hated each other immensely when they first met. Ugh, she still remembers all those times that he pulled his stupid pranks on her and commented on her weight, telling her she's put on so much weight that an elephant would look small in comparison. He really did used to get on her every last nerve. And then one day, they just clicked. She doesn't know how or when it happened, but it did. And now she can't imagine her life without him... well she couldn't until 6 months ago anyway.*****
Even though Chinki had moved away 2 years ago, nobody had moved a single item in her room, it was all still the same as it was all those years ago. Like she had never left in the first place.
"So..." Chinki started... Twinkle looked at her with narrow eyes. She knew her friend long enough to understand when she was trying to avoid or hide something from her. "Alright Chinki, spill. What is it?" Twinkle said. Chinki's face went blank and she began to look around the room, like she was searching for something. That was enough for Twinkle to realise that this was something big. She marched up to her and looked directly into her eyes, a warning that she shouldn't even attempt to lie to her. "Chinki, what are you hiding from me? You know I WILL get it out of you some way or another so..." It seemed to do the trick because Chinki let out a sigh. "Ok, fine. But you have to promise not to overreact and definitely not get angry, promise?" Twinkle agreed for the sake of agreeing, Chinki suggesting that she make a promise meant that this news was going to really piss her off, so she waited patiently. The silence before the storm.
"Ok so, basically... what I want to say... what I want to say is that... I don't know how to say this... but... but... I'm sure you would've found out soon anyway... but I..." Chinki stuttered. Twinkle had had enough. "CHINKI YAAR, JUST SAY IT ALREADY" Twinkle exclaimed losing the last of her patience. Snapping her eyes shut, "Kunj-Bhaiya-is-coming-back-tomorrow-night" Chinki let out in one breath. What? Twinkle wasn't sure that she heard correctly. "What did you say?" she asked again. Squinting through her eyes, she repeated, "bhai is coming home tomorrow night, it was supposed to be a surprise but you know na that I can't keep secrets, mere pet mein gudgudi hoti hai" Chinki looked down at the floor because she could feel the explosion coming anytime now. Twinkle couldn't believe her ears, Kunj was coming back? Tomorrow? She had so many questions that needed answering but she also knew that this wasn't fair on Chinki, there was no point shooting the messenger, her battle will commence with the person who sent the message, the message she wasn't supposed to receive... with Mr. Kunj Sarna.
"I'll see you tomorrow Chinki" Twinkle replied before she headed out the door. Chinki smacked herself. Why couldn't she just keep her mouth shut? Twinkle didn't react at all which only meant one thing... that tomorrow was going to be one eventful day.*****
