CHAPTER FIVE
"So did you miss me?" Kunj turned his head to ask her.
"Nope" came Twinkle's immediate response.
He narrowed his eyes at her, "jhooti, tere chehre pe saaf saaf dikhta hai ki you really missed me"
"Please Mr. Kunj Sarna, it's nothing like that at all"
"Miss. Twinkle Taneja, I've known you for the past 15 years of our lives. I know when you're lying to me toh tu koshish bhi mat karna please."
"Acha? How do you know exactly? Please enlighten me Mr. Sarna, even I want to know" Twinkle remarked sitting up on her bed and crossing her legs.
Kunj, who was still lying on her bed, turned and looked her contemplating whether or not he should tell her the truth. It was these little things that he had picked up on over the past years, small things that may have gone unnoticed by other people but they stood out to him, a clear indication of her hiding the truth or downright lying. Seeing Kunj take his sweet time, Twinkle grabbed her pillow and placed it over her lap and rested her elbows, taking her face in her hands. She is so adorable, Kunj thought to himself, that little unintentional pout of hers that appears when she's sulking is so cute.
"You have tells" he finally said to the ceiling, his arms supporting the back of his head. There was silence. He turned his head again to see a confused expression on Twinkle's face. He sighed and sat up opposite her. "See, when you lie, you always do these little things, like biting the inside of your bottom lip or tucking your hair behind your ears, which give you away. You also find it hard to keep your gaze on the person you're lying to for a long period of time" Kunj explained as a matter a fact. Twinkle just stared at him. How had he managed to notice those things? She knew she bit her lip, it happened automatically, she couldn't help it, sometimes she even made the inside of her lip bleed from the biting but Kunj wasn't supposed to know that, no one was supposed to know that! Not knowing how else to escape this slightly embarrassing situation, she decided to be honest with him.
"Fine. I missed you. A lot actually," She told him with a frown.
"Bata toh aise rahi hai jaise koi meherbani kar rahi hai, ache se bol na, pyaar se" he instigated.
"Shut up Kunj Sarna!" She punched him in the shoulder and folded her arms across her chest.
"Kya kar rahi hai yaar Twinkle?" He rubbed his shoulder pretending to be hurt. "What if something happened to my shoulder? Phir se koi siyappa ho jata, Siyappa Queen!"
Twinkle glared at him with the most adorable expression adorned across her face, "How mean Kunj. I'm telling you that I missed you and you're... forget it, I don't want to talk to you!" she sulked, moving the pillow from her lap ready to leave the room.
Kunj grabbed her by the shoulder to stop her from leaving. "Acha sorry, it was a joke, a bad one I know" he apologised. "I missed you too. A lot actually." She smirked at his repeat of her line.
The next hour or so was spent with the two of them talking about the happenings in their lives during their time away from each other. Twinkle decided to reinstate her routine of 21 questions again and Kunj obliged, informing her about his flat, his new friends, his University, his course, the job offer and what it meant for his career. Twinkle knew that Kunj would eventually come back to join his family business but for now he wanted to be independent on his own two feet and she admired that about him. She also told him about her job and the future promotional opportunities it provided. Kunj gave her his full attention too. A lot of people thought that Twinkle was just a pretty face but he knew that his Siyappa Queen had the brains to go with such a beautiful face. After all, she had tutored him a lot during college, not that he let this piece of information get out. His reputation was at stake after all.
He came out of his thoughts and directed his attention back to what she was saying. Bad move. He threw his palms into his face. Seriously? Here he was appreciating her intelligence and here she is, now excitedly gossiping about the latest make-ups and break-ups of Bollywood.
"Twinkle, please yaar! I'm not one of your girlfriends, I don't care about their love lives. Yaha meri kudh ki love life ka koi khabar nahi hai aur tu hai ki..."
"Don't you dare Kunj! Do you have any idea how upsetting their break-up is..?!" she exclaimed pointing her finger in his face.
"Whatever Twinkle. By the way, why do you have such an interest in his love life? Kudh ki shakal dekhi hai? He wouldn't look at you twice... actually wait, he wouldn't even look at you the first time, twice toh bohot dur ki baat hai" he remarked as he burst into giggles.
"Kunj tum na..." He saw her face scrunch up before she reached for her pillow. He immediately jumps off the bed, ready to defend himself against whatever she has planned for him. When Twinkle sees his reaction, she decides to take another drastic measure instead. She abandons the pillow and picks up her shoe instead. Kunj's expression changes straight away. "Oi Siyappa Queen, don't you dare" he says as a warning to not approach him. Before you know it, Kunj is out the room and gliding down the stairs with Twinkle following behind him closely with her trusted shoe in hand. The living room becomes their battlefield, an epic game of catch and chase between the two individuals. Twinkle aims her shoe at him and misses. "Ha! What now huh?" Kunj asks over-confidently. "So what? Babaji ne haath kyu diye hai?" she shouts back before she runs after him once more. He knew that she was not going to give up any time soon so with his life on the line, he runs towards his own house for safety.
*****
The past hour at the Sarna house was rather eventful. Initially everyone was tense and worried about how the confrontation between the Kunj and Twinkle would go down. However, the concerns were soon washed away as the family members engaged themselves in placing bets on how badly Twinkle would hurt Kunj or how well Kunj would manage to pacify Twinkle. Chinki and Anand argued that Twinkle wouldn't let him off the hook as easily whereas Nicki and Surjeet advocated in favour of Kunj's manaofying skills. The others were still making up their minds, after all, there was a decent sum of cash on the line. Bebe couldn't help the laugh that escaped her watching the scene unfold in front of her. Only Kunj and Twinkle were capable of bringing out the child in everyone like this. The fun and games were soon interrupted by a series of screams and shouts that echoed throughout the house in the next second.
"Bebe, bachao! Yeh ladki pagal ho gayi hai" Kunj shouted as he ran behind her for cover. Twinkle followed closely behind making circles around Bebe trying to reach Kunj somehow. The rest of the family waited patiently, watching this rather exciting performance play out in front of them.
"Arreh bas bhi karo dono" Bebe shouted throwing her hands up in the air, tired of their fighting already. They both immediately froze in their positions.
"Bebe, it's all Kunj's fault," "Bebe, it's all Twinkle's fault" they reply accusingly, simultaneously pointing towards each other.
"My fault? Shut up Kunj Sarna, this is all your fault!" Sending him her famous death glare, Twinkle turned away throwing her arms across her chest.
Kunj loved her sulking self, he thought it was rather entertaining. Deciding to finish things once and for all, he cautiously made his way around her, just in case she decided to launch a surprise attack towards him. When he figured that she was done with the fighting, he stood next to her and nudged her shoulder slightly. "Okay it's my fault and I'm sorry..." he said holding his ears. Twinkle acknowledged his cute little gesture but turned away trying to hide the smile that was forming. "...Atleast forgive me now" he nudged her again. She sent a fake frown towards him. "Tu aise nahin manegi hai na?" he challenged before pulling her into a headlock. "KUNJ!" she screamed elbowing him in the stomach to release his grip. "Ouch!" Clutching his stomach, he shot her a pretend angry stare. "I forgive you now" She replied casually as she checked out her nails. Meeting each other's gaze once more, automatically, the laughter erupted and consumed them.
Soon the whole house was laughing and pretty much everyone was glad to finally have Kunj and Twinkle back together again. They really were the joy and sunshine of their families. Everyone gathered around the living room once again enjoying these precious and happy moments with one another. Chaos replaced the laughter soon as arguments regarding who won the bet became the central topic of discussion. A couple of hours passed and Kunj headed to his room to rest off his jetlag. One by one, slowly everyone else began to retire to their rooms or head back to their daily routine of chores and activities. Twinkle and Chinki decided to hit up the mall because it had been an eternity since the two best friends shopped to their hearts content with each other.
*****
"What about this one Chinki?" Twinkle asked for the hundredth time as she checked out the dress on herself in the mirror. They had spent the past 4 hours buying clothes and shoes and make up, you name it, each giving the other their honest opinion and suggestions. They would've continued to sprawl the shopping centre had it not been for Twinkle's very loud grumbling stomach. So, taking her poor tummy into consideration, they decided to pause the spree for now and grab a bite to eat first.
They were both seated at a table munching away at their burgers enjoying their 'girl time' together, just like they did before Chinki moved away when someone called Twinkle's name from behind.
"Twinkle Taneja, my my, it's been a while no?" came a voice which belonged to a rather skimpily clad girl holding what was supposed to be a purse but the extremely small size meant you could probably just about fit a pen in there. She was followed behind by two other identical girls who were carrying multiple shopping bags on both arms.
Turning back to Chinki, Twinkle rolled her eyes. Ugh! Mona. She thought to herself. She briefly recalled the other two girls as Simple and Dimple or was it Dimple and Simple? Who cares? They were the definition of bimbos' and that's all anyone needed to know. She turned again to face Mona who was now standing at their table, "Hi Chinki," she waved throwing her one of those fake smiles. Chinki gave her a half-assed smile back before averting her attention to her phone in hand. Twinkle held back her laughter. God, she loved Chinki! She remembered how Mona had tried to befriend Chinki back in their senior year at school only so she could get close to Kunj. Poor Chinki, always having to deal with girls like this whose sole interests were in her brother and not in an actual friendship with her. Understanding that Chinki wasn't going to give her the time of day Mona diverted her attention back to Twinkle. Mona had always hated Twinkle and Twinkle didn't really know the reason behind her animosity but she figured it had something to do with Kunj and... him. So keeping in mind their history together, Twinkle prepared herself for whatever bullsh*t was going to be thrown her way.
"It's so good to see you doing so well Twinkle! I hear you got promoted to Assistant Editor recently. Congratulations. I'm so happy for you! Especially after everything that happened with you, all those photos and rumours you know?"
And there it was. A leopard never changes its spots. But Twinkle wasn't in the same position she was in all those years ago. These past few years really helped build her back up and she wasn't going to take this crap from anyone anymore. Definitely not from this Mona.
"Thank you so much Mona, you always have my best interests at heart. I hear you recently lost a modelling contract to someone 6 years younger than you? Don't worry about it sweetheart, I'm sure you will get what you deserve soon enough" Twinkle remarked with a smile plastered across her face. She knew her words hit the right target when Chinki gave her a reassuring smirk and Mona's fake smile had turned upside down.
"I didn't lose that contract. I gave it away actually. Anyway, forget all that Twinkle. Have you guys heard about the reunion party we're planning to throw for our class? We're thinking about making it a couple's entrance only. Now, I know you probably don't have anyone Chinki but I'm sure Twinkle will be a great friend and let you borrow one of her client... oops, I'm sorry, I mean one of her 'friends' for the night, right Twinkle?"
Twinkle felt her heart sink. She knew from the smirk across Mona's face that it was a deliberate dig at her, about what happened with her and she didn't want to give her the reaction she was expecting. But those words reopened a wound inside her that she thought had completely healed by now. It should have healed by now. Knowing that her voice would give away her true emotions, Twinkle kept her mouth shut but didn't move her gaze away.
"Do you know what Mona?" Chinki started. "It's actually really sad that you're still stuck up on Twinkle even now. She's now working as an Editor for one of India's top Interior Design companies and you're still a struggling model" she scoffs. "And as far as dates go, don't you worry Mona, I'm sure bhai will figure something out, especially since he'll accompany Twinkle to that party. Ohhh... that's what it is isn't it? You're still bitter that despite your very desperate efforts, he never looked at you once. He always chose Twinkle. Do us a favour Mona, go and bark elsewhere, we actually have a life to get on with, move along now." Chinki retorted. Twinkle gave Chinki a light smile which conveyed her sincere gratitude. She couldn't have been more blessed to gain a friend like Chinki in her life. The girl always understood her inner feelings and knew when to jump in for her defence.
"Whatever Chinki. You'll get the invites by post" Mona replied before scurrying along with her minions following behind once again.

Twinkle opened her eyes. She had been twisting and turning in bed for the grueling past 2 hours but there was still no sign of sleep. All those memories came flooding back to her. The questions, the accusations, the names, the cameras... She tightly shut her eyes again in an attempt to make them go away. But they didn't leave.
Turning her lamp on, she sat up in bed, raking her hands through her hair. Books, she thought to herself. Reading always helped her divert her mind, maybe it would help her finally get some sleep. She got out of bed and opened the closet door. She was rummaging away looking for a good book to read when she heard the click of her balcony door. If that had happened in the last 6 months, she would've been screaming and shouting right now but things had changed in the last 24 hours. She knew it was him.
Turning around, she saw Kunj, dressed in his pyjama bottoms and a tee, close the door behind him. "You're awake." She said stating the obvious. "So are you" he replied back. With the way he was looking at her, Twinkle knew that Chinki must've told him what had happened at the mall today. Placing the book back in its rightful place, she closed the door and went to join him. He had already made himself pretty comfortable on her bed, the sheets pulled over his large frame. At times like this, she was glad that she had a king size bed and not a tiny single. Making her way to her side, she slipped into the sheets beside him letting his warmth engulf her.
When Chinki had let the incident at the mall slip earlier, Kunj knew that it would affect Twinkle as much as she didn't want it too. He was so angry at himself for not being there to defend her but Chinki had managed to calm him down and explained how she had handled the situation. He was proud of her for taking a stand for Twinkle, not that he was surprised. They had all been a very close-knit group since childhood - "All for One and One for All." When he saw her lights turn on from his bedroom, he knew she was probably having difficulty sleeping and so here he was, ready to support his best friend in any way he could. He doesn't remember how many times he's snuck into her room like this during ridiculous hours at night. Most of the time, she was aware about his presence but sometimes even she didn't know that he was in here, he would be out the window before she woke up to find him in the morning.
"Tu teekh hai?" he asked, concern evident in his tone. He looked down at her now comfortably positioned on his side, his arm supporting her head. When she merely gave him a reassuring nod, he understood that she didn't want to speak about it yet. "I had that dream again" was all that she said. He felt his heart give way. She wasn't supposed to have those dreams again... ever. It was all supposed to finally be over. Not wanting to push her to talk, he simply remained silent. A silence that spoke volumes of understanding between them. He understood that openly discussing the issue would only emphasise how real everything still is and right now, she doesn't need that reality check. "Go to sleep Twinkle, I'm here now" he finally said as he pulled her closer to him. Heeding his words, she turned to embrace him, her hand resting on his hard chest. She finally closed her eyes, already feeling the drowsiness take over her body.
Her mind drifted back to the first time that Kunj had snuck into her room at night to comfort her after that incident occurred. They didn't remember falling asleep but they woke up that morning in each other's arms. She remembers waking up at night times sweating, sometimes even screaming, but he was always there to calm her down and soothe her back into slumber. Kunj had been her rock in those earlier days and eventually the dreams stopped occurring too. Sometimes he would sneak in, just to make sure that she was ok, he thought she wouldn't notice but she always noticed, she felt his presence every time. A presence that made her feel like everything would be alright in the end, that everything will fall into place itself. A presence that calmed her, soothed her and made her feel safe. And now, with the last of her consciousness giving way to the slumber, only moments away from consuming her, she happily let herself drift away, knowing that she was safe now. He was with her. He will always be with her.
- Enjoy!
