Chapter 24:
Everyone went off to different rooms to shower and get dressed. Swara used one of the guest rooms, leaving the room her and Sanskaar were sharing to himself, mostly due to the fact that she was too embarrassed to face him. Sanskaar was actually pretty thankful that she used the other room; even he couldn't seem to face her... His mind is full of questions regarding his surprising behavior. What if Laksh hadn't come and interrupted them?... What would had occurred between him and Swara? This haunted him and made him nervous.
Mostly everyone sat at the dining table, after refreshing themselves, ready to be served lunch by Sujatha's hands. Neetha and Swara came a couple of minutes later after everyone else settled themselves into their seats. Sanskaar averts his gaze down onto his plate as Swara makes her way around the table to sit next to him, the only available chair left. Both clearly avoid one another's eyes and sit uncomfortably in their chairs, feeling very aware of each other and what transpired between them before.
Sujatha: Arre Shambu, go on and get Neetha and Swara their plates.
Shambu: Ji Mam.
Shambu leaves to the kitchen and then comes back with two plates in his hands. Just as he approaches the room, he happens to trip and lose a grip on of the plates. It falls down onto the floor and shatters. He wears a guilty look on his face.
Sujatha: It's alright Shambu, it's just a plate. Just go get another one.
Shambu: Mam, I'm afraid there are no more plates.
Sujatha: Are you sure? (puzzled by this)
Shambu: Yes Mam.
Sujatha looks at both Swara and Neetha, seeming as if she's deciding on something.
Sujatha: That's alright. Give Neetha that plate...Swara...
Swara looks over in Sujatha's direction.
Swara: Haa Maa..?
Sujatha: You can eat from Sanskaar's plate... waise, they say that if a couple eats from one plate-- their love grows. (smiles)
Sanskaar and Swara look at one another at this and quickly switch their eyes away at the same time.
Sujatha: Sanskaar, that's alright with you, isn't it?
Sanskaar: ...Yes Maa, it's fine.
Sanskaar slides over his plate to the center, giving Swara access to his food. She gives him a quick look before hesitantly reaching out for the food. Nervously she nibbles on it... Everyone admires seeing them together, eating out of the same plate, looking too cute with each other...Whereas Ragini feels as if she wants to break something over frustration on seeing her brother and bhabhi getting closer.
Later into their meal, Sanskaar and Swara unknowingly reach out for the last piece of roti left on the plate. As their fingers brush against one another, they immediately become alert and meet each other's eye. Together they move their hands away quickly...keeping their eye-lock in tact though. Both have suddenly lost their appetite...
Uttara, who was involved in a conversation with Neetha, happens to notice this scene between her jiju and didi. She smiles happily and nudges Laksh, who sits besides her. Laksh, startled, looks over to Uttara who quietly indicates towards Sanskaar and Swara. Uttara watches as a pleased smile forms on his lips and tease form in his eyes. He gives Uttara a sly smile before bringing his hand to his mouth and coughing loudly... Seeing that this has no affect on either one of them, he continues to cough obnoxiously. Uttara tries her best to hold in her giggles.
Startled, Sanskaar and Swara stare at Laksh who unsuccessfully holds in a grin and look down at his plate. They look back at each other and embarrassedly turn the other way, avoiding the other once again...
Ragini: God Laksh, at least cover your mouth. (purely disgusted)
Laksh, focusing his attention now onto his wife, purposely coughs again but this time in her direction and without using his hand. He coughs all over her food, earning himself a furious look on her face and her pushing the plate away in horror.
Ragini: You are disgusting Laksh. -- You purposely did that.
Laksh: Arre, what did I do? It's not my fault if I am sick. I can't possibly help it, can I?
Sujatha: If you two are done with your banter and are done eating, come outside... we will all sit out, it's very nice weather today.
Samar: And do what Maa?
Neetha: (hastily) Play, what else?
Everyone but Sujatha and Dadi groans, making Neetha frown at this. Sanskaar and Swara just become nervous all over again on the mention of games...remembering what the last game had done to them.
Neetha: You all are so mean... besides, I wasn't even going to suggest anymore of my "dumb" games.
She shoots a glare in her jiju's direction as she says this. Laksh obviously avoids looking back at her. Neetha happened to overhear her jiju complaining to the others of how ridiculous the previous games were.
Neetha: We can always play cards or a sport... Oooh--Volleyball! It's been awhile since we've played that together. Why don't we play girls vs. boys?
Laksh: (frowning) That's not fair... us men are outnumbered.
Dadi: Arre, we will figure something out... Neetha, you have said a good thing. We should all go outside and play. Besides, it's been awhile since we've all had some exercise in us.
Everyone agrees with this, knowing that's its very true. Soon they all get up from their seats, leaving their empty plates lying on the table. Sujatha is just about to follow everyone else outside until she spots Swara lingering around by the table.
Sujatha: Swara, are you not coming outside?
Swara: No Maa, I will come...I was thinking that I'd help Shambu with the dishes.
Sujatha: (smiling) Teek hai. Don't take too long though.
Swara: Ji.
Swara gathers all of the empty plates along with Shambu and takes them to the kitchen to wash. She kindly tells Shambu that he can proceed on with any other work he has to do while she will clean the dishes. Shambu thankfully leaves her alone in the kitchen. Swara starts with rinsing the dishes and then applying soap.
A few minutes into her washing, she notices something moving around from the corner of her eye. Confused, she looks off in its direction and her face pales as she sees a hideous thing next to her on the counter...
----------
Since Dadi and Sujatha were convinced that they were too old to play volleyball, they stayed out, sitting on their chairs and sipping on their lemonade that Shambu had brought out for them. Neetha's idea of boys vs. girls was taken into consideration and they broke off into teams... Sanskaar, Laksh, and Samar on one side...Uttara, Neetha, and a bitter Ragini on the other. They hadn't even really gotten into the game when Sanskaar began to feel thirsty. It was incredibly hot outside and he didn't really have water after eating his food... He temporarily leaves the game, telling his teammates that he will be right back. Sanskaar heads off towards the kitchen...
Just as he approaches the entry way, he hears the clattering of dishes and a scream of fright. Puzzled, Sanskaar hastily walks into the kitchen to see what is wrong and watches as Swara screams and brushes her hands against her body, seeming as if she's trying to wipe something off of her.
Swara: Ew! Ew! Ew!
Sanskaar: Swara???
Sanskaar hurriedly comes to her side, looking at her with concern. He takes a grip on her arm and shakes her, trying to get her attention.
Sanskaar: Swara-Swara, what's wrong? Why are you screaming?
Swara, startled, finally realizes Sanskaar's presence and a wash of relief overcomes her. Quickly, without thinking, she hugs him tightly and hides her face in his chest. Sanskaar is momentarily stunned by this action of hers.
Swara: Mr. Maheshwari! --- There are two of them now!
She trembles in his arms and Sanskaar finally brings his arms around her, completing their embrace. He is worried on seeing her so scared.
Sanskaar: Two of what Swara? --Come on, tell me.
Swara: (rambling on) I was just washing the dishes and they just popped out of no where! They were on the counter before and jumped, so I got scared, and now I don't know where they are--but I know they're still in here somewhere!
Sanskaar grabs a hold of both of her arms and brings Swara's attention back to him. Swara looks into his stormy molten chocolate eyes with a child-like expression, seeming scared as if there is a monster in her closet. He talks to her in a serious tone...
Sanskaar: What are you talking about Swara?
Swara: (tone full of innocent fright) Crickets Mr. Maheshwari! There are crickets in this kitchen! Two of them! Big crickets!-- and now I don't know where they are!
Paranoid, she hastily looks around in search of the ugly creatures. Sanskaar just stares at his wife with disbelief... Was she serious? She is honestly scared of...crickets? This puts a slow grin on his face, which grows quickly and then he suddenly bursts out laughing at the whole thing, bringing Swara's attention onto him once again.
Swara: (innocently, still scared) Aap--aap...Why are you laughing? This isn't something to laugh at... I am scared Mr. Maheshwari!
Sanskaar: (still laughing) Yes it is. -- This is something to laugh at. Swara you are too much. You are scared of small crickets?
Swara: (eyes widening) Small?! Mr. Maheshwari, didn't I just say that they were big?!
Sanskaar: (controlling himself) Okay, I agree that they are big...but they don't even do anything. Waise, compared to you they are really small. You are much bigger than them Swara, you shouldn't be afraid. They should be afraid of you.
Swara: How do they not do anything! They scare me! The way they stare at me with those beady little eyes and those disgusting antennas moving around! (disgusted, shivers)
This has Sanskaar laughing again at her innocent child-like behavior. Swara frowns at this.
Sanskaar: Tum to ek kamaal ke cheez ho Swara. I would have never guessed that you would be the kind of girl who is afraid of crickets.
Swara: (defending herself, questioning him) How are you not afraid?
Sanskaar: I am a man Swara.
Swara: (hotly) So you mean that just because I am a women-- it's natural for me to be scared of a cricket? --- All women aren't even that weak like how you think!
Sanskaar is surprised by how suddenly she has become angry and has made the topic serious.
Sanskaar: No, that's not what I meant. I am a full grown man, in my late twenties... my days of being scared of crickets are long gone.
Swara: So you were scared of them before?
Sanskaar: Swara, they are small little things. They don't harm you in any way. There's no reason to be scared.
Swara just pouts to herself, finding his attempt of soothing her not really working. Crickets are disgusting and they definitely are harmful... She watches as he narrows his eyebrows a little down and peers at something behind her. He speaks in a deadly tone...
Sanskaar: Swara...
Swara: Yes? (curiously looks at him)
Sanskaar: Don't look now, but one of the crickets is by your feet and the other is on the microwave beside you.
Swara jumps and then screams for her life as she hugs him once again tightly, wrapping her arms around his neck and smothering her face into the crook of his neck. She practically cries, "Mr. Maheshwari, please get rid of them!!!" Sanskaar just stands there, with Swara hanging onto him for dear life, laughing his head off-- enjoying seeing Swara like this a whole lot.
Sanskaar: Swara, I am just kidding! There are no crickets around, so relax.
Surprised Swara looks up and meets his smirking face. He feels pretty pleased with himself in successfully fooling her. Her whole face turns red from embarrassment and she angrily hits him hard repeatedly on his chest, making Sanskaar laugh once again yet let out sounds of pain at the same time.
Sanskaar: (in between laughing) Ow!- What are you doing?
Swara: You are so mean Mr. Maheshwari!-- You are taking advantage of my fear!
Sanskaar gives her a cheeky smile and says, I couldn't resist.
Swara breaks out into a small smile on seeing how cute he looks, smiling boyishly at her. Soon together they laugh at the whole situation, completely forgetting about their differences between each other from before. After their laughter subsides, Sanskaar grins at her.
Sanskaar: Come on, let the dishes be... We still don't know where those crickets are...they can be wandering around here anywhere.
Swara spins her head in various directions on hearing his words, searching around quickly for any sign of them. Sanskaar prevents himself from chuckling at this.
Sanskaar: Let's go outside... We're playing volleyball. And with you finally joining us, you can replace Ragini because she is absolutely horrible at volleyball... in fact, she is horrible in pretty much everything except when it comes to pampering herself.
Swara smiles at this, knowing that what he is saying is true. She awkwardly moves away from him and twists her fingers with one another, looking down shyly.
Swara: Mr. Maheshwari, I can't play...
Sanskaar: Why not?
Swara: I've never played volleyball and I just am not in the mood--- (says quietly, not looking at him)
Sanskaar: Swara, I swear-- It's like as if you have split-personality. Just a couple of moments ago you were yelling at me for supposedly being sexist, which I am clearly not, and now you are acting like a complete stranger.
Swara, despite herself, smiles at this and stares up at him.
Swara: You just caught me on a wrong time.
Sanskaar: No, I am convinced that you suffer from split-personality. When you're silent, not comfortable and are acting distant you are Swara, but when you are yelling at me and are comfortable around me then you are...
Swara: (curious) I am???
Sanskaar: ...Shona... (says after a short thinking)
Swara: Shona?
Sanskaar: Haan, Swara aur Shona... Shona, whom I came to know recently... So can Swara go away for a bit and allow Shona to come out and play?
Swara looks at Sanskaar for a dazed second before giggling at his words, not able to help herself. Sanskaar smiles at this.
Sanskaar: I'm assuming that it's you Shona?
Swara: (still laughing) Yes it is Shona.
Sanskaar: Will Shona come and replace my horrible sister?
Swara: (laughing again) ...Yes she will.
Sanskaar: I will forever be in debt towards Shona for this favor.
Swara continues to giggle as she follows Sanskaar out of the kitchen and outside, joining the rest of the family who are gathered out on the front lawn.
