Part 4:
I was feeling that same searing sensation in the middle of my chest. I tried to control my anger. I didn't want to take it out on her, but I definitely felt like hurting someone. I kept a straight face but my eyes must have given away my digust.
"Is everything ok?" Suhani asked me, gently.
"Yeah." I replied.
"So why did you want to meet up today?" She asked. She was in a pleasant mood. That irked me. Why did she seem so relaxed and happy? Was it because of him? I nearly bit my tongue. She touched my arm and brought me back to reality.
"Oh, um...I just wanted to meet. Can't I meet you without having any particular reason?" I asked her. She didn't accept that answer.
"You seem upset. Is everything ok?" She wasn't going to give up.
"I'm fine. How are you? How's work? How are uncle and aunty?"
"Everything's fine." She said. Then she looked down. I noticed a change in her expression. "Work isn't exactly how I imagined it..." She said.
"What do you mean?"
"I don't know...I mean, I thought it would be harder. I anticipated more duties."
He answer seemed strange. "You don't have enough work?"
"Yeah, sometimes when I feel like I'm going to be given a specific task...it ends up going to Vikram." She said.
Just hearing that name made me feel like vomiting. I knew it; this Vikram guy was fishy as heck. "But he's in the marketing department, Suhani...and you're in the communications department."
"He says he has no fixed position yet. We're all on probation at the moment. None of us are permanent. He does a lot of tasks which would normally come my way.
"Did you talk to your boss?"
"He's never around." She said.
"Anyone below him?"
"Yeah, he said that I was doing just fine."
"Oh, he's not friends with this Vikram guy, is he?"
"He is. Everyone's friends with him." She laughed. "Anyway, forget it...we have a meeting tomorrow and my boss will be there. I'll talk to him." She said.
"Make sure you do."
"I will." She promised.
"Suhani, can I ask you something?"
"Yes."
"If someone's really controlling, would you take it?"
"No, of course not, but who are you talking about?"
"I could be wrong, but there's something really amiss about this Vikram guy. I didn't notice it before but it's there...something about him is so off. I don't like it." I said.
"But he's your friend."
"Yes, but...he's not like my best friend. He's not like Sharad." I said. "Can you promise me something, Suhani?"
"Yes". She said.
"If there's anything wrong, if Vikram bothers you, you won't hide it from me." I said. "Promise me..."
She seemed confused. She slowly nodded her head and frowned. "I don't think he's a bad guy..."
"I'm not saying he is, but, as your..." I paused. "But as your husband, I have the right to ask you to at least keep tabs on him." I said.
She nodded. "So, where are we going?" She asked. She seemed hesitant somehow. She seemed cautious and worried. I wished I could read her mind.
"We're going for dinner..." I said. I smiled. She smiled back. I felt lighter for the moment. I took her to a restaurant and we had dinner together. I was lost in my thoughts throughout. Something about Vikram was beginning to alarm me. I didn't want Suhani to be left alone with him. Suhani didn't talk but I knew she was watching my grim expressions. Time passed by far too quickly. In the middle of dinner I got a call from our office that there was a problem with the shipment of one of our products. God only knew what had happened this time. I sighed in frustration because it meant I had to cut dinner short. Suhani looked concerned. She touched my hand.
"What happened?"
"There's some problem at the factory. I have to go, since Bhaiyya is out of town and Anuj just got home. I need to go. Come, I'll drop you home." I said. I took her hand and pulled her behind me as we walked out of the restaurant. I stopped when she stopped me.
"Yuvraj, I think you should go there now, I'll go home in a cab."
"No way, I'm taking you home." I said.
"But, you'll be late. This sounds like a serious issue..." She said. She had a point but I wasn't in the mood to listen.
"I'm driving you home and that's final."
"Yuvraj, my house and the factory are in two different directions. There's going to be traffic. You'll be late. It's dangerous..." She gave that worried expression.
"Then come with me. Let's go to the factory together." I said. She was surprised.
"C'mon Suhani, I'll drop you home on the way back." I said. She agreed. I was relieved. We drove there and I cleared up the mess which was due to some paperwork being missing, and then we headed back. We drove in silence. When I reached her house, I stopped the car. I couldn't stay quiet anymore.
"How much longer will this continue?" I asked.
"What will continue?"
"How much longer will you stay here?"
She didn't reply. Her eyes welled up with tears.
"Suhani, it's going to be a month tomorrow, enough. Come back home." I said.
"No..." She shook her head. She was crying now. I tried holding her hand and she pulled away and opened the door and left. I went behind her and stopped her. I held her arms and brought her closer.
"Calm down..." I said, gently. I held her face. She was crying. "Suhani, I'm sorry for everything. I'm sorry for all the pain I've caused you." I said. I meant it.
"No, don't apologize. Yuvraj..." She paused. She was crying so hard now that she couldn't speak. "There's no need to apologize for one sided love. My story is the story of unrequited love. This is how it's supposed to feel." She said. "It's supposed to hurt and I'm supposed to be crying. Nothing here is amiss." She said.
I hugged her tightly and she hugged me back. Suddenly having her in my arms triggered a storm of emotions. I recalled the way Vikram kept touching her, as if it was no big deal. How dare he touch her like that? Recalling every time I'd seen her with him frustrated me. I pressed myself against Suhani. I hugged her more tightly. I didn't want to let her go. She was mine. I felt this wild urge to take her somewhere far, far away from all our problems, somewhere I could be with her, alone. If I had every right to hold her, then how could any other man lay his fingers on her? She was mine, wholly mine. I rubbed her back and buried my face against her neck.
My breathing accelerated. She was holding on tightly to me as well. The wild urge to have her made it impossible even to stand. I wanted to take her away. For the first time ever, I couldn't imagine anything better than being with her and having her in my arms. All sorts of desires unveiled themselves in my mind. My hands dropped to her waist and her hips. For a second or two, I let myself imagine what it would be like if we could be one. Our noses touched. She stepped back and looked at me. She immediately lowered her gaze. "I love you." She whispered. Then she turned around and left. I heard her lock the door.
