Part 1:
Suhani's POV:
I went back home as soon as everything went back to normal. I left in the middle of the night so no one could stop me. I turned my phone off. I knew Maa would be hurt and even Yuvraj would be angry at me for not telling him that I planned on leaving immediately, but somehow it didn't feel right for me to stay anymore. I needed some time to think and I thought Yuvraj needed some time as well. Mummy and Papa were surprised to see me there, and a little worried as well, but they didn't question my decision. I knew that they both wished that it wouldn't have come to this.
I turned my phone on in the morning and there were several missed calls from Maa. There wasn't anything from Yuvraj, not even a message. I knew he was really stunned by my decision and the way I left without telling him or without saying goodbye. Even if he didn't love me, this was still something which was bound to hurt him. I called Maa and she answered me in a weak voice.
"Hello Maa..." I said.
"What are you calling me for?" She asked. She sounded hurt. My eyes instantly became teary hearing her tone of voice. I didn't know how to answer her.
"If you had told me you wanted to leave, I may have let you go without protest, but the way you went about it has deeply hurt me, Suhani...it made me feel like you truly hate me." Her voice broke.
"No Maa, that's not true. I'm sorry. Maa..." I started crying.
"Why did you leave like this, Suhani? Answer me." Maa demanded. She was crying.
"Because I can't take it anymore, Maa. I can't stay there anymore, because I'm human and when I'm around him, I can't help it but hope and with hope comes disappointment. Maa, it hurts..." I said. She was quiet.
"Let him come home from work today and I'll beat some sense into him." She said.
"No, Maa...let him be. Leave him alone..." I said.
"Suhani, he loves you! He just needs a jolt to realize it." She said, and hung up.
So Yuvraj went to work. The office was open again. At least I now knew where he was. A couple of days passed. He didn't call me and I didn't call him. The silence was deafening and painful. It was impossible to think about anything else while I was at home, so one day I started applying for jobs, and to my surprise, I was called for an interview at a company within three days. When I did some research on the company, I found out they had a line of skincare products and were competitors of Birla industries. This was a huge problem because if these people found out the Birla bahu was working outside their company all sorts of rumors would spread. I couldn't hide my marital status. I was in a dilemma. On the day of the interview, I told my name and somehow, the person interviewing me didn't seem alarmed. It wasn't until later that I found out that I had given them my old CV, which had my maiden name on it. I got the job and began working the next day. Most of my coworkers were female and unmarried, so in order to blend in I decided to pretend to be one of them. That's why I decided to go to work without wearing my mangal sutra and sindhoor.
It felt like something was missing and I didn't like the feeling, but I kept it going. Work went well and I learned the ins and outs of the company, but within a week or so, I was in for a huge shock. One of the marketing executives at work invited me and one of my coworkers for lunch. He told us that he wanted to go to a particular restaurant which was a bit far away from our office and we agreed, he said that he was going to have lunch with one of his friends from another company in town. I didn't think much of it until we reached and I found out who this friend of his was.
The Marketing Executive's name was Vikram and my coworker Anjali was accompanying us. She was a young, fresh graduate and unmarried. She seemed quiet and nervous and was hired around the same time as me, so I tried to keep her company. She stuck to me and called me Di. Vikram was confident and experienced. He also seemed new at the company and didn't have too many other friends in the marketing department.
We reached the restaurant in his car and stepped out. I didn't pay attention to any of the other cars in the parking lot but I wish I had. We entered and Vikram guided us to a table of four which he'd reserved. We sat and waited for his friend, and when his friend entered, every pore on my entire body made me aware of his presence even before I looked at him. My breath got caught in my throat and I froze completely when I saw him enter. Vikram got up and shook hands with him. He sat down and they both joked about something. Vikram introduced Anjali and I to him.
He tried hard to cover up his anger but I'd known him for the past 8 months, and I could tell that he was livid.
"Guys, this is Yuvraj Birla, he works at Birla Industries in the marketing department, and that's where I used to work before I came here..." Vikram said. That explained everything. The puzzle was thus solved. I was beside myself with shock and embarrassment.
Anjali was staring at Yuvraj and blushing, Yuvraj was staring daggers at me and his eyes were growing darker with anger, and Vikram was oblivious. I was sitting right next to him and through the course of our lunch, he somehow ended up moving his chair closer to mine, but I was too distracted to notice and didn't care.
Yuvraj was wearing a light blue shirt with a dark blue die, and dark blue pants. His hair looked the way it did when he was stressed and had run his fingers in it far too many times, and he looked tired. He stopped looking at me but I noticed him clutching his phone. He was typing a message on it when Vikram got up and went to the restroom. Anjali was deeply interested in Yuvraj poked me in the arm.
"He's really hot..." She smiled. I felt uncomfortable. My phone beeped and I saw that it was a message from Yuvraj. After sending it, he got up and left.
"Tell Vikram I had to leave, it was an emergency. I'm waiting for you in the car, tell him anything but come and talk to me before things get worse..."
I did what he told me to do. I told Vikram that I had to pick up something from one of the shops nearby and would meet him and Anjali after lunch at the office. I went out into the parking lot and found Yuvraj's car immediately. I opened the door and sat down.
