I would like to add something here.
I was facing the same issue a few days back. I would be on the home page of IF and then click a link and LO! an ad page would open and sometimes it would redirect me to Google Play store asking me to download an anti virus software ( called 360 degree or something). I would clear my history, cookies, run a complete anti-virus check (I have AVG anti virus on my mobile) Restart IF and the same problem would recur. This was surprising as I have pop up blocker on my browser. Then I tried to dig deep into this. Normally when I click a link on IF it shouldn't take me to some other site. So, I thought that IF was hacked. But that wasn't the case as my laptop wasn't giving the problem. this was occurring only on my phone and tablet.I being a tech savvy person realized that this was something to do with the DNS setting. On my laptop I have set it to 8.8.8.8, but I don't know how to set it on my phone.I checked my modem's DNS setting and saw that it has been changed to something else, which I googled and found that it was located in Norway! I contacted my ISP and complained. They asked me to change the DNS setting on the modem. I did so and for 2 days it was fine, but after 2 days the same pop ups started coming up.Then I realized that my Wi-Fi modem is hacked. (It's called DNS hijack - https://www.gohacking.com/dns-hijacking/) After some discussion with friends I came to know that if the default password on the Wi-Fi modem (admin, pw admin) is not changed and you leave the modem on 24x7 people do hack it.I bought a new Wi-Fi modem and made sure I change the default password. Now I don't have any pop ups from IF or any other site.I hope this helps! 😊PS: after checking your modem, please clear all history from your device before using it again.
An update on this. I replaced my router yesterday. Previously, I had simply changed the password on my old router and the DNS address but nothing had changed. Yesterday, I turned in that router in Best Buy and got a replacement, and installed it. Today, I again got the said pop-up.
Also, this happens in one of my logins (I have different user accounts set up in my computer for different purposes) but not the others. In this login, only Chromium is affected but not FireFox
