THE VALMIKI RAMAYAN

BALAKAND: INTRO OF RAVANASURA

AND BIRTH OF LORD VISHNU AS RAMA

Rishyashringa stayed with Maharaj Janak for many years till the right time for performing yaaga comes. In a far island bound by water on all sides lived the most capacious, most intelligent emperor versed in vedas Ravanasura. Eventhough belonging to a Rakshasa clan he is well known as Ravana Brahma. He was most powerful one on earth. He blinded by the boon emerged into a irrepressible one who intends to bring down the Lord himself of the celestials, and the Yakshs, and the Gandharvas, and the Brahmanas, and the Asuras. The sun do not burn him, or the wind dares to blow about him, and at the sight of him, he must be garlanded with billows, the ocean dares not stir. He is the greatest fear that afflicteth everyone.

All the humans Devatas Gandharvas tired with his atrocities pray Lord Vishnu to help them out." O God! save us from Ravanasura's clutches ,Oh! Repressor of foes its is time for your avatar on earth to save us."

Lord Vishnu assures them "i will abide among the mortals ruling the earth for many years." having thus conferred a

Boon upon Gods Lord Vishnu of subdued fell to thinking as to the place where he would be born among men. Then Lord Vishnu that one of eyes resembling lotus petals dividing his self into four parts choose King Dasharata to be his father.

Finally the auspicious day arrived King Dasharatha performed the Putrakameshti yaga under the supervision of Maharshi Rishyashringa all the pious people their Kul Guru Shri Vashishta Bhagwan and all his people. The sacrificed the horse of high soul. King Dasharatha finished his Yaga and all the immortals accepted their share in the yaga and blessed him to have offsprings. From the holy sire emerged Agni Bhagavan and offered a pudding to King Dasharata which he shared among his three wives Kushalya, Sumitra and Kaikeyi. The Monarch and his wives having observed a long await for their dreams come true about having their Vaaris. King Dasharatha honoured Maharshi Rishyashringa and Shanta before they leave for their exile.

Six seasons have rolled away after the sacrifice. And in the twelfth month, on the ninth lunar day, under the influence of Punarvasu asterism, when the Sun, the Moon, Saturn, Jupiter and Venus were at Aries, Capricon Libra and Pisces and when Jupiter has arisen at the moon with Cancer Kaushalya gave birth to Lord of Universe, bowed unto by all the worlds, Rama the descendant of Ikshwaku, furnished with excellent marks, --that one half of Vishnu--, exceedingly righteous, with bright eyes, and mighty arms, and crimson nether lips, and when he first cried his voice sounded like a kettle drum. Then on giving birth to that son of immeasurable talent Kaushalya looked resplendent.

And then was born of Kaikeyi Bharata, having truth for prowess, endowed with all the virtues and the very fourth part of Lord Vishnu. And Bharata of purged intelligence was born under the asterism Pushya, when the Sun entered Pisces he is Part of Lord Vishnu Sudarshana Chakra, while the two sons of Sumitra were born when sun arose in Cancer under the asterism Aslesha. Lakshman and Shatrugan being Adishesha and Conch of Lord Vishnu.

And when the eleventh day has gone king performed the naming ceremony of his sons. And experiencing a great delight, Vashista Maharshi conferred the names. The high souled eldest one was called Rama, and Kaikeyi's son was called Bharata, Sumitra's sons were called Lakshmana and Shatrugana. And the king fed brahmanas as well as all the inhabitants rural and urban and he bestowed heaps of jewels upon Brahmanas. Thus he celebrated the natal rites of the princes and among all the princes, the eldest, Rama had been a special delight to his father.

As years passed Rama Lakshmana Bharata and Shatrugna grew up into little boys. All the princes were sent to Vashista Ashram to their new Gurukul.
