THE VALMIKI RAMAYAN

BALA KANDA PART ONE

In the city of Ayodhya resided a king named Dasharatha versed in vedas, commanding all resourses, far sighted, of mighty powers, dear to the inhabitants of his kingdom(praja) both rural and urbanan Athirathat(a great warrior) and the lineal desendant of the Ikshwaku Vamsham. And in the excellent city of Ayodhya the men were happy and righteous souled, and wisely read, and contented with their own possessions, and devoid of selfishness, and speaking truth. People of all vargas and varnams resided together in the same community with fraternity. The Brahmanas endowed with gratitude, Serving God's and guests, and magnificent, and heroic, and possessing powers. The Khatriyas were obedient unto Brahmans, and the Vysyas followed the Kshatriyas, and the Sudras occupied their proper vocations, ministered unto the three.

And though engaged in austerities with the view of having sons born to him, the powerful and high souled king, had no son capable of perpetuating his line . And mentally the matter over, the high souled one thought" Why do i not celebrate a horse sacrifice with the intention of obtaining a son?" and that highly energetic pious intelligent monarch, in consultation with all his counsellors of sedate minds , having made up his mind to celebrate the sacrifice, said unto the best of counsellors , Sumantra Chief counsellor of Dasharath making swift movements called togetherall the spiritual guides versed in Vedas, like Suyajana, and Vamadeva, and Javali, and their kula Guru Vashishta Bhagawan. All of them approved for the sacrifice.

Its like this a horse is set loose and after its yatra is prepared to sacrificial ground on the northern bank of river Sarayu later the rites of horse are performed with ordinance. This is how the Aswamedha yagna popularised.

THE VALMIKI RAMAYAN

PART TWO

The story of Rishyasrunga

All the sacrifices and all the efforts of Maharaj Dasharath go vain. Then the pious people of his kingdom and his family priests advice him "o king if you wish to have a child then a yaga is to be performed by the great saint Rishyasunga. King Dasharatha enquires about who is Rishyasrunga

To which all the wise tell him Maharshi Kasyapa will get a son named Bibhandaka and will get a son Rishyasrunga who passes his life in woods. No one dare to reach him because of his father Bibandaka. It is said Maharshi Rishyasringa is highly souled and spent all his life serving the sacrificial fire and his famous sire.

At that time powerful Romapada is the king of Angas. And the consequences of some default on king Romapada's part there will occur a terrible and dreadful drought capable of striking terror into all. And filled in grief the powerful king Romapada seeks the advise of the wise men. All the wise men advise him to bring Maharshi Bibhadanka's son Romapada to his kingdom. After hearing the priests words the king thinks how can he bring over one endowed with energy. Then in consultation with his counsellors, the prudent king having come to a conclusion, will, honouring them duly, desire his priest and courtiers to set out in quest of Rishyasurnga.

After the quest all of them return to the king as they fail to keep up their promise, with aggrieved hearts, with heads hanging down, they reply they could not find Rishyasringa and all their efforts have gone vain as they could not face Maharshi Bibandaka. Maharaj Dasharad too come to the aid of Anga rajya. He declares that he will give his daughter's Shanta's hand to the person who can eradicate the drought. They all knew it is possible by only Rishya sringa to eradicate the drought in the kingdom.

Finally Maharshi Rishyashringa will be brought to the kingdom. Lord of rains Varuna blesses the kingdom with rain the moment Maharshi Rishyashringa steps his foot in the kingdom. King Dasharatha weds his daughter Santa to Maharshi Rishyasringa as promised. Thus Rishyasringa becomes Dasharatha's son in law who will in the later stage help in performing the yagna.
