@jaya that is what I said. We are blessed with intellect. In any book, in any show we can take what we want and leave what we don't want. Take the good messages is my take as long as any book or show on epic goes.

Is the horse sacrificed after the ashwamedha yajna? Another thing I'm unsure about is that whether dashrarh organized an ashwamedha yajna or not. It was Rama who did it and the horse was stopped by lava and kush.. A little confused here

Quoting here , part of a text from VR - Griffith's translation., reg, Dasharatha's Aswamedha yagna..
Per this, Dasharatha performed the yagna, before the birth of Rama, and horse is sacrificed per prescribed norms.

-------------

The sacrificial altar then
Was raised by skilful twice-born men,
In shape and figure to behold
An eagle with his wings of gold,
With twice nine pits and formed three-fold
Each for some special God, beside
The pillars were the victims tied;
The birds that roam the wood, the air,
The water, and the land were there,
And snakes and things of reptile birth,
And healing herbs that spring from earth;
As texts prescribe, in Scripture found,
Three hundred victims there were bound.
The steed devoted to the host
Of Gods, the gem they honour most,
Was duly sprinkled. Then the Queen
Kaus'aly, with delighted mien,
With reverent steps around him paced.
And with sweet wreaths the victim graced;
Then with three swords in order due
She smote the steed with joy, and slew.
That night the queen, a son to gain,
With calm and steady heart was fain
By the dead charger's side to stay
From evening till the break of day.
Then came three priests, their care to lead
The other queens to touch the steed,
Upon Kaus'aly to attend,
Their company and aid to lend.
As by the horse she still reclined,
With happy mien and cheerful mind,
With Rishyas'ring the twice-born came
And praised and blessed the royal dame.
The priest who well his duty knew,
And every sense could well subdue,
From out the bony chambers freed
And boiled the marrow of the steed.
Above the steam the monarch bent,
And, as he smelt the fragrant scent,
In time and order drove afar
All error that his hopes could mar.
Then sixteen priests together came
And cast into the sacred flame
The severed members of the horse,
Made ready all in ordered course.
On piles of holy Fig-tree raised

Apparently, its translation of Valmiki's verses...which I got OL and going through same , currently.

Reg, the sacrifice., had the same doubt, so asked in that thread.

Just saw a glimpse of star Ramayana Rama...

Oh god! What was that!!!😲😲
Rama tossing his hair ...no crown... Rotating his bow! I mean all that required!!😭 kya bana diya Ramayana ka😭

Looks like it will beat star MB with all absurdities...

Couldn't even watch full episode sooo disturbing it was.😭

I still don't understand what problems the CVs had. ...They have already made story with enough twists and turns, romance and intrigues , villains and heroes... ... Each verse is mantra in itself...Heck, the great Valmiki has even written the dialogues

On ashvamedha yagya...

I don't know what actually shown in this show
Becoz Rama toh abhi yagya nahi karte n not even dasharath ...the serial itself is beyond citation or source , it is at its creative maha best...

I always say Ramayan n mahabharat r not just a story...or any scripture for that matter... While at the outer level... each verse may seem to be telling a story...but there are deeper meanings and spiritual philosophical truths hidden in them...

Ashvmedha yagya means killing animal instincts within us...
Killing our ...jealousy, hatred, anger, ill will, ego... and the purpose of these Yagnas was to spiritual charge people so they could work at conquering their base sells...not literally killing animals...
Nd Ashva has lot of meaning in Sanskrit... Not just horse...

That's why it is said that one who performs ashvamedha yagya 100 times successfully actually becomes Indra...king of devatas...
Means one becomes great by repeating ...we should practice killing our anger n negetivity within us...then only one can attain the supreme consciousness...

I have quit the show after what was shown yesterday. It's just getting more absurd and unrealistic everyday. 😔 Whatever little semblance it had with Ramayana is now lost with it's totally nonsensical and fake storyline.

Even within its fake story, Ashish fails to impress me as Lord Ram. Don't get me wrong. I like him as an actor and felt he was really good in RR, but as Ram he just doesn't fit. The way he keeps tossing his hair around like some Star Plus heroine, the way he does battle scenes, the way he handles the bow and arrow, none of them have any semblance to Lord Ram at all, not even a "human" Lord Ram. Even as a human, Lord Ram still behaved with grave dignity and grace. Ashish looks like some warrior from Lord of the Rings, especially in these pics!

^^ And OMG!!!! Mareech or Subahu (whoever is in the background) looks sooo weird. 😲 I admit, mytho shows in the past haven't been great with their physical depiction of the rakshasas and asuras either, but here they look like monsters from LOTR. 😆 Seems like this show is heavily influenced by LOTR, especially in the makeup and costume department!

ok, the look of the demons and the fighting skills of rama and lakshman are reminiscent to the LOTR films, storylines are near fictional, but this show is better than the other current mytho shows.

We can add another distortion to the list - Ram's opposition to the Ashvamedha Yagna.

I can understand why they're showing this track as they are, to speak out against animal abuse, and I agree with the sentiment and ideology behind it, but at the same time we cannot sugarcoat the beliefs and customs of that era. I do not know if the horse really was sacrificed or not, because some historical accounts state the horse was actually not sacrificed and the so-called practice was a more recent interpolation in religious texts, but the fact is, back in that era these yagnas were glorified and Lord Ram himself performed it as a King. King Dashrath performed it many times (though not when Ram was older like they're showing here).

This reminds me of one of Star Plus' Mahabharat's biggest blunders, where they too tried to sugarcoat an ancient ritual. As everyone knows, in the epic Mahabharat Madri commits Sati (self immolation) on her husband's pyre when Pandu dies, blaming herself for giving way to lust and becoming the reason for his death. We all know how controversial this ritual is, and how wrong it is, but the fact remains it was still prevalent mere generations ago, let alone in the Mahabharat times! Instead, Star Plus showed Madri "fainting" in Kunti's lap and dying that way, which made no sense since no one simply drops down dead.

I get that SP did not want to show Sati in a TV show, but is it right to change history and sugarcoat some terrible incidents simply to appease viewers?

Likewise, if the Ashvamedha yagna really was sacrificed in the end, it's a terrible ritual yes, but why show it different from how it's written? Why sugarcoat things by making the characters discuss horse sacrifice, when such a discussion probably never existed in the first place?

It also makes no sense to show Lord Ram opposing this yagna and questioning it, because it's a well known fact that in Ramayana, he himself conducted this yagna! Ram himself says (in the epic) that the benefits of the Ashvamedha yagna will be good for all the citizens and as a King, it's his duty to perform such yagnas regularly. Also, he wanted to extend the borders of Ayodhya throughout the entire Earth.

Instead, they're showing Dashrath as Ram in this show, performing the yagna for the betterment of his people, and Sita as Luv Kush, although they stopped the horse to fight Ram's army and not to feed the horse.
