I no longer question Kunal and Nandini's love because clearly the writers believed in it and so did Kunal. It's easier to move forward and tell a better story then backtrack and butcher things. After the saccha pyar thing I feel like KuNan happened because of Kunal's internal crisis. Something like a midlife crisis where you start wondering who you really are and if you had taken the wrong path in life.
Kunal and Mauli were supposed to be an odd couple to begin with. At the very start of the show, Mauli said Kunal / Nandini would've definitely fell in love because of how similar they are vs Kunal / Mauli. If the writers had done a better job with it, this could've been a story worth telling. Sometimes we just connect with people who are similar to us. Everything clicks and we want to be near that person. Things are just so easy when you are magically on the same page. So when Kunal went on his journey to finding himself, and really it matches, because he was jobless trying to find himself as what type of doctor/man he wanted to be. It makes complete sense that he was drawn to another jobless person like him who was also on a similar journey to finding herself. They could've been really amazing friends but his sudden attraction toward her changed the nature of their relationship. Once the relationship changed and the affair started I feel like the writers missed another opportunity to tell a great complex story. Why didn't Kunal end his marriage to Mauli once the affair started? He seemed upset and shocked about his marriage to Mauli ending. Shakti said that he was grateful that Mauli took the step to end it implying maybe he wouldn't have done it himself. In the initial days of the affair revelation his thoughts were very much about Mauli and he was kind of ignoring Nandini. He even dreamed about Mauli. It seemed like he was still thinking of how to fix everything. That all changed after Mauli made the decision for him and in a way freed him. While Mauli had no need of him, at the same time Nandini desperately needed him. That made him move towards Nandini completely.
So while I don't downplay Kunal and Nandini's love story. And despite the horrible writing, I can see their bond, I think Kunal never actually got a proper chance to test their love. To me post leap Kunal did not seem like a man who was in love with his dead spouse. Sure he missed her, and he talked to her but it wasn't the romantic type of longing you see in great loves. It seemed more like he was missing a companion, a friend. These days Kunal mentions so little of Nandini, especially when it comes to Mauli. Even he must be realizing he miscalculated things with Mauli. When the Mishti is his daughter revelation happened Kunal told Mauli that he would've gotten over his Nandini heartbreak if she had given him time and he would've stayed with her. Totally forgetting at that time he didn't want to stay with her for the kid. That is not how one speaks about the great love of their life. Now in the promo it sounds like he is kind of mocking his journey towards Nandini. He is regretting it for sure. Again not how one speaks of the great love of his life. So something about how he viewed his love with Nandini has definitely changed. Also how he viewed his relationship with Mauli has changed.
