If I offended anyone, I apologize. I just wanted to vent my frustrations with this show. Let me see if I can explain better.
I was expecting this show to be a certain way, and its completely different. I don't expect all shows to be lovey dovey, but when there is a social message to be delivered, I expect it to be positive at least.
A show claiming to deliver a certain social message (whether it is injustice against women, children, etc) does it by showing a light at the end of the tunnel. There is no light in sight here. All I see is an Achilles Shield.
The Achilles Shield is an analogy, for all that fall (die or fail) because they are told that they will. It is a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Those that face this shield, live in fear of being unable to attain their dreams. These dreams are illustrated on the shield, and held just out of reach. The hopelessness of the situation, and the effect of seeing these dreams, holds them spellbound, and in the end, that is what kills them. The fact that these dreams mean so much, and that they live in constant apprehension of never being able to attain them. Achilles was a strong man, but in the end it was a single arrow, aimed at his heel that ended his life. The shield was powerless to protect him. The self-fulfilling prophecy (that no one can get past the shield) was exposed to be the cheap trick that it was. A cheap trick, meant to keep all that opposed Achilles in fear of his prowess. Any man (or woman) who claims that a woman is powerless, deep inside, know they're lying. They know that this custom of blindly following is as tenuous as it should be. The minute women stop following, and stop expecting others to follow, is the minute when oppression comes to an end.
In this show, the prophecy is that women are weak, and powerless against the decisions men make for them. The women hear this message, and bow down.
I don't have a problem with this show depicting such a prophecy. Although society has evolved a lot when it comes to gender equality, there is still a looonngg way to go.
My problem with this show, is that there is no recognition that this message is wrong, or at the very least, that some disagree. The women quite sedately accept this depiction of society. And although this message may have been true (and continues to be true in certain rural parts of the world), there is no reason to be portraying it on television,
with no hope of bettering things. There should always be an ultimate win in sight. And I don't see one. Saroj's husband is no prize. His every action makes him more distasteful to me. And Saroj's every benign smile makes me cringe. This is this poor dutiful daughter's life? Doesn't she deserve more? Or will she only have more in her dreams? Do we really live in a world, where watching a woman quietly accepting every wrong, is entertaining?
