I have received these messages: (1) Go have sex with a married woman on the night of your marriage to another. (2) Barter your daughters like they're dry goods on a shelf. If the boy's family doesn't like the first one, they can put her back, and request one with a better expiry date. (3) Marry any man who offers, because that is best you'll ever get. Don't wait for someone who is not in love with your sister. Don't wait for someone who is respectful and as gentle as your deserve.
My problem with this show, is that it claims to fight such behaviour, when it doesn't. I've seen quite a few shows which claim to fight injustice against women, but end up only promoting it. Like in Mann Ke Awaz Pratigya, Krishna's brother was extremely abusive, and even tried to murder his wife, but then suddenly everything was alright. People like that don't just turn a leaf in real life. They stay that way. And if a woman wants to live, she has to leave. Sticking around in hopes that her husband will miraculously change is dangerous, and promotion of such a view is unfair to society as a whole. But the same will happen here.
Watch, Eijaz's character will fall in love, and that love will miraculously turn him into a good guy. How does that, in any way, fight injustice against women? I know its just 26 episodes old, but so far, the men pull the strings, and the women puppets dance to their tunes. Even Madan is a disappointment. I still can't get over that scene where he yelled at all the sisters (telling one to sit up straight) and then stormed out.
The reality of this show is, the protagonist slaps his brother for showing the tiniest bit of concern for him, doesn't think anything of adultery, and neglects and slaps his wife. The last is what turned me off. I don't think I'll be watching anymore. I feel bad for the cast, they were probably told that this is a progressive and positive show, but its not. Its has cheap gimmicks and OMG moments galore, but when it comes to actual meaningful scenes, it has none.
Here's Shubh Vivah's recipe: Dictatorial men (who order, abuse, and neglect the women) + Strong Women (but strength is defined in terms of "self-respect"-- the quietly put up with everything type, because that is a women's lot in life) = ratings. It claims to have a social agenda, but it doesn't. Nothing I've seen so far has convinced me otherwise.
