Thanks for all the lovely comments. I am updating the final chapter. Thanks for being with me in this beautiful journey. Without your likes and comments I would not have found the motivation to continue. I am quite a lazy person and very bad with deadlines.😆

I hope you all will like this chapter. I shall be waiting eagerly for your feedback.

Part 12

“Mam, I am sorry to say this but you are being blind in your son’s love.”

Seeing her, Aastha got up and said, “Oh, you are here already. Have you got your luggage?”

“Yes, it is downstairs. Kanchan Mam asked me to keep it in the hall while she prepares the guest room.”

“Shaurya Sir, if you don’t mind can you come downstairs with me. Some of Aastha Mam’s belongings are still kept downstairs. Please help me carry them to the room.”

“Please Anokhi, don’t bother Shaurya for this. I will bring them once the room is arranged. Shaan has made a mess of it.”

“It’s okay. I don’t have a problem. Come Miss Bhalla, let’s go.”

As they got out of the room, Shaurya said, “By the way what credit were you asking for? You actually spoiled all my plans. And your own plans were so stupid, even a donkey could come up with better ones.”

Anokhi rolled her eyes, “Please don’t mind Sir, but were you by any chance born near a zoo or something? I really don’t get this fascination of comparing me with different animals. First cat, then horse, now donkey. Quite a downgrade. Horse was better. And if my plans were so stupid, who asked you to follow them?”

“I didn’t have another option. I couldn’t share the plan with anyone else. Who knew I would get the worst partner.”

“If I am the worst partner, why do you follow my words?”

Shaurya frowned, “Don’t you think too highly of yourself? What makes you think I follow your words?”

“Kanchan bhabhi told me you didn’t create a scene seeing Aastha Mam in the morning. Everyone was anticipating an explosion. I had to exert great self control to prevent myself from telling her about the counselling session I did with you last night.”

“Your counselling session? You think that was the reason I didn’t create a scene.”

“What else? When I told you last night about the court order and how Aastha Mam would stay in your house, you completely freaked out. You kept blabbering about what was the need to come to Sabharwal house, they could have stayed at the flat. You don’t want any problems because of her. Then I asked you to calm yourself down.”

“I very well remember your counselling session, and the reasons you gave. That I should not break my head over something I cannot control. Shouting and creating a scene will only raise my blood pressure. That nowadays people my age are also getting heart attacks. Were you counselling me or scaring me?” Shaurya said.

“Whatever, it worked right?” Anokhi asked.

“Wrong.”

“Then what was the reason?” Anokhi was confused.

“Never mind.” Saying this Shaurya took Aastha’s bags and went upstairs.

Kanchan and Gayatri were preparing food in the kitchen. Anokhi was helping them. Devi came there and said, “Gayatri, Kanchan, I think you should visit your parents for a few days. Now that Aastha and Anokhi are here, we won’t have any problem.”

“Excuse me Mam, but I don’t think they want to go home now. We were planning to have so much fun together.”

“You are just a guest here Anokhi. Please don’t interfere in our family matters.”

“Fine, in that case I believe you won’t mind having burnt toast for breakfast. That is the only thing I can make. Don’t worry, it is perfectly edible once you scrape off the top layer with a knife.” Anokhi replied.

“Shut up and behave yourself.” Devi started breathing heavily in anger.

Just then Aastha came there and said, “Devi Bhabi, I think the environment in this house will not be good for your health for a few months. Now that I am here, why don’t you visit your family for a few days. Shaan tells me that it has been years since you visited them. It is never too late to mend relationships. You should also try like Shaan and I are trying.”

“I don’t have any relation with them. This has been my only family for years.”

“I was just giving a suggestion. Rest is all up to you. After all it is your life, your choices. Nobody should force you. Just like you should not force Gayatri and Kanchan.”

“As an elder, I have every right to discipline them. That is necessary to maintain order in the house.”

Aastha chuckled, “Kanchan and Gayatri are old enough to discipline themselves. Shaurya is sitting there. Shall I call him? I am sure he will agree with what I am saying.”

Devi didn’t say anything and angrily stomped off from there.

After she was gone, all four of them broke into laughter.

Gayatri said, “Aastha Bhabhi, it is so good to have you back.”

Later that day.

“Shaan you didn’t need to drive me all the way to Kapurthala. I could have taken the train. How many times have I asked you to focus on your work. That institute is yours too. For 25 years you didn’t pay attention to it but now that you have started going to work, you should try being a bit regular.”

“I know my dear wife that you are self sufficient. You can manage everything on your own. But your parents are my parents too. For 25 years I could not do anything for them or for you. Let me start with my family first. I hope they will be comfortable living in my flat for a few months.”

“You could not do anything for us because we were far away from you. But Shaurya was with you. Why could you not see the pain he was in? I know our separation was difficult for you but how I wish you could rise above it and be there for him. I have been living in the guilt of not being there for my son all these years. Yet I consoled myself thinking you were there for him, his family was there for him. Now that I realize how lonely he had been throughout his childhood, I find it very difficult to forgive myself.” Aastha looked out of the car window to control her tears.

“Noor I am sorry. Here, take this and wipe your face. If your parents see you like this, they will think I have been harassing you.” Shaan extended a handkerchief towards her.

Aastha took it and exclaimed in surprise, “This is still with you?”

Shaan smiled. “Yes, how could I discard one of your last memories. Remember you gifted this to me a few days before you left. You had painstakingly embroidered my initials on it. Ever since you left, I carried this everywhere I went.”

Aastha started laughing, “Thank you very much Shaan for this thoughtful gesture, but this one is not going to serve the purpose of a handkerchief any longer. Look at its condition. Kindly keep it in your souvenir box. I will make another one for you to carry around.” She returned it to Shaan.

“So you will visit your college first.” Shaan asked.

“Yes, I will apply for six months leave citing the court order. Hopefully they will consider it.”

“I don’t understand why you turned down Shaurya’s offer. You could have easily left this job and joined SIAC.”

“I would have accepted the offer if it was made based on my qualifications and eligibility but you know it was just an impulsive move by Shaurya because he thought Anokhi was leaving with me.” Aastha replied.

“It is strange how quickly he got so attached to Anokhi. She is a wonderful child I know but Shaurya finds it very difficult to connect with people.”

“Hmm. Perhaps Anokhi was able to break through his tough exterior and bring the child back. The talkative, fun loving, easy going Shaurya that I had left behind.” Aastha reflected.

“Yes, I can already see the change in him. I was surprised by how cool he was today with your arrival. I never expected it.” Shaan remarked.

“So was I. He might not have wanted the divorce, but he certainly didn’t want me to land up in Sabharwal house like this. I know it is going to be difficult for him to have me around all the time. But I could not let go of this opportunity. I needed to be in Sabharwal house to rectify my mistakes.”

“Don’t worry, he will slowly come around.” Shaan gave Aastha an assuring look.

Meanwhile in Sabharwal house.

Anokhi had returned from college. She went up the stairs to go to her room. As she was about to enter her room, someone held her hands and pulled her aside.

“Are you out of your mind, Miss Bhalla? If Badimaa had seen you entering her room in your absence, she would not spare you.” Shaurya said in a hushed voice.

“Oh, I am so sorry. I thought this was my room.” Anokhi said apologetically.

“I still wonder how you top your exams. You can’t even figure out the way to your room.”

“That is not my fault. Your house is hella confusing. Can you give me the name and contact of your architect?”

“Why? Do you want to recommend them to someone?”

“No, so that I can warn people if they want to hire them.”

“What is wrong with my house? Don’t you like it here?” Shaurya asked, a bit offended.

“Why does it matter? I am just a guest here until the hostel room falls vacant.”

“I will make sure it never does.” Shaurya muttered under his breath.

“Did you say anything?” Anokhi asked suspiciously.

Shaurya shook his head, then said, “By the way, did you figure out the answer to your question?”

Anokhi was confused, “What question?” Then as if remembering something said, “Oh, the reason for your weirdly calm demeanour this morning. Yes, you will be pleased to know that I have. In fact I knew it from before and that is why I used it on you last night.”

Now it was Shaurya’s turn to be confused. “What do you mean?”

Anokhi gave a mischievous smile. “I can be a bit of a tubelight, professor Shaurya Sabharwal, but after going through the syllabus a few more times, everything became clear like water. Your behaviour in the court yesterday was enough to give me an indication. So when all other ways to convince you had failed, I took out the last weapon in my arsenal. I told you that I was accompanying Aastha mam to your house and would stay here.”

Shaurya was left speechless.

“Now tell me. Didn’t my idea work like a charm? Anokhi gave him a wink and started walking down the corridor. Then she stopped to turn around and said to Shaurya, “Sir, will you kindly close your mouth and show me the way to my room? Or should I find it myself?”

“No wait, I am coming.” Shaurya went to join her and said to himself, “Good heavens, this girl is always a step ahead of me.”

“I am sorry I always forget to ask this but how are your feet? Are they still paining? I think you should stop wearing those shoes I gave you.” Anokhi said

“Thank you so much?” Shaurya said with a sigh of relief.

“For what?”

“For saving me from those torturous shoes. I can’t tell you how grateful I am.”

Both of them laughed out loud.
