The Colours of Love -Updated

PART 4

Minty Sareen was talking to her sister over the phone. Their plan was perfect and till now it was being executed very well. She checked around the house to exclude anybody's presence. "It is obvious that Rajat will refuse getting engaged to Devyani...he is madly in love with Anushka. I have seen and assessed that. And as far as I know Anushka and Shastri ji they shall not take this easily. I am sure that Anushka is going to blame Rajat for breaking Devyani's heart. We have an excellent plan at hand and we are going to achieve two thing at one go". Infact, Minty Sareen was sure that out of humiliation over the broken engagement, the Shastris might return to Kanpur and that would end all her cause for anxiety.

Rajat had been desperately trying to talk to Devyani before the engagement. Ultimately, he found the opportunity. He cornered her and enquired "Is everything okay Devyani? Is everybody happy with the engagement?" Devyani replied in positive. She said everybody was elated and extremely happy. Before Rajat could ask anything else, Minty called out for Devyani. She had noticed Rajat taking Devyani to a corner...and at the penultimate moment she could not allow her plan to be destroyed by that scant brain. Rajat stood there slightly flustered, but happy by Devyani's confirmation.

Anushka could not understand why Rajat was trying to strike up a conversation with her from the time he had arrived. He was crossing his limits. This was not done. She was consciously avoiding him and made sure that their paths did not cross. Devyani was dressing up for the engagement and she was looking so happy. Anushka Shastri could do anything for her sisters, and sacrificing her love was just something very minor.

The time for the ceremony had arrived. The Sareens and the Shastris had reached the hall. Everybody looked happy and Anushka Shastri was putting on a wide fake smile. Rajat glanced at her from the corner of his eyes. She was looking like ethereal. It was her innocent beauty which had appealed to him the most. In just a few moments, they would be bound together and he was getting impatient. Finally, Minty Sareen came with the "Ring" and a cunning smile, and gave it to him. "Rajat take this ring and make Devyani wear it...today is your engagement with Devyani"

Rajat stared blankly at his mother, probably he had not heard her correctly. But she repeated the same thing again. He felt like he was sinking...sinking in a deep ocean...what was happening?...this was not something which he had anticipated. "Devyani Shastri"?...what made everybody think that he was in love with Devyani? He had always treated her like a student and nothing more...so why all this misunderstanding? Slowly the Jigsaw puzzle was falling in place. No wonder Anushka was behaving coldly with him and ignoring him. But he had to explain her everything, he couldn't let this happen. Three lives were at stake and that meant a lot. He looked at Devyani...she was glowing, she was enjoying every moment of the ceremony...poor girl how he wished she knew the truth. He was in a dilemma, and was just hoping that this was a nightmare...when his mother reminded him again to go ahead with the ceremony. Slowly, he started walking towards Devyani. He looked at Anushka's face and could immediately sense her pain and anguish at losing her love. He too had the same emotions right now.

Their love was colourless for the moment.
