Chapter 25
Soumya had finished draining the fries in the sieve and had placed them on the kitchen paper when she saw both brother and sister beaming at each other coming down the stairs with a practically empty tray. She had smiled to herself at least one of her missions had been accomplished the serenity etched on their faces was not missed by her as she greeted them with a wide grin. "Just in time, I finished preparing lunch" she had announced pointing to the packed picnic hamper. "You think we'd have space left after you made us stuff that delicacy" Raavi had laughed gingerly and Harman had tousled her hair fondly. "I'm sure you'll find lots of space in your stomach once the hamper is opened" he had winked at Soumya compulsively whose heart had missed a beat in that moment. Their eyes had locked and Soumya had found herself drowning in the abysses he had for eyes Raavi had smiled watching them lost in each other. Her heart swelling with happiness to see her ever scowling brother wear a distracted look on his face practically ogling his gorgeous wife.
"Ahem!" Raavi had coughed purposely breaking their fixation off each other they had almost guiltily averted their gazes. Raavi had giggled stuffing a nearly cool chip in her mouth. Harman had grinned at her pulling her to him squeezing her head between his chest and armpit "That's it today we rid ourselves of all pests in this house" he had remarked jocundly while Raavi squealed from under his arm. "Save me bhabhi save me... else I will breathe my last" and Soumya had given them an off handed smile this was what she had wanted her family happy and blithe. "Then you accept you are a pest" Harman had guffawed his laughter reverberating within the dining area. "No!" had come a defiant mumble from underneath his arm where Raavi stood pinned to him pleading to Soumya to aid her. Suppressing an urge to laugh aloud Soumya had practically yanked Harman's arm from around her sister in law freeing her.
"What was that for?" Harman had asked surprised to see her on Raavi's side. "Now you're with the enemy" he had accused "that means you too will be punished in similar fashion" he had threatened her, his eyes gleaming with the prospect of holding her close. "Well there practically is no need to waste energy when I just got the pest repellent at a very cheap rate from the market" Soumya had flashed the siblings an endearing smiling causing Harman to break in a rippling laughter while Raavi had run off. "I'm not going to be sprayed to death and that, bhabhi, is cheating" she had thrown it at them taking to the lawns outside. Soumya had laughed softly while Harman had pulled her in his arms nuzzling her neck passionately. "Thank you" he had whispered and Soumya had placed her index finger on his lips silencing him. "There is nothing as an apology or gratitude in love I'm happy you found out she loves you too" she had smiled and Harman had placed his lips on her forehead hoping for this to be a permanent fixture in his otherwise lonely life.
"Mmm" she had murmured soaking herself in his love that drenched her to the core "Soumya" he had whispered conspiratorially and she had gazed at him with love struck eyes "I.." he murmured.. "Yes" she had encouraged him impatient to hear sweet nothings from him. "I'm.. quite hungry.. can we just go outside" Harman had managed a straight face whereas Soumya had looked at him surprise evident from her wide eyes. He certainly had pulled her leg but she had found it rather sweet and slipping her hand in his own she had picked up the fries while he carried the hamper making their way to the gardens outside. The afternoon was spent in carefree activities spreading a blanket in a shady haunt the three of them had munched on burgers coleslaw fries and chicken rice prepared expertly by Soumya. Kaka had taken to a nap and Harak Singh had been served by him in his room, a pleasant breeze blew through the length and breadth of the lawns swaying the tall trees in rhythm. Clearing the eatables away Raavi had asked Harman to tie her tire swing to one of the low branches in the apple tree.
Harman had laughed at her childish desire but nonetheless had proceeded to fish for a spare tire from his garage depriving it of a rim he had then proceeded to tie it to a low branch of a nearby tree. Raavi's joy knew no bounds as she hopped inside the tire pumping her legs to fly high in the air. Soumya sat sated watching the siblings interact easily after the initial pushes Harman had trudged back to where Soumya sat awaiting him resting against the broad trunk of a palm. She had flexed her legs and Harman had plopped down beside her making himself comfortable on her lap. This certainly had been the most soothing afternoon he had spent in his entire lifetime. Soumya had cupped his bearded face in her tender palm while the other one smoothed his vagrant fringe he had sighed in content a distinct calm blanketing him. "She looks so happy" Soumya had remarked watching Raavi swing nearby "She's just eighteen happiness comes easy at this age" he had murmured. "Eighteen!" Soumya had repeated amazed "That means she was seventeen when she had Sameera" she had questioned stunned at the revelation. "Yes seventeen... too young to understand what a grave mistake she had made. I can't understand why Kamla never took care of her, the woman I believe never cared for anyone besides herself" he had replied his tone smarting and Soumya had bent down to kiss his supple lips.
"Don't think of her Harman" she had advised him and he had opened his eyes to stare at her glistening ones. "How can I not every time I see Raavi I'm reminded of what she did to her. I was the step child not she... how could she have neglected her own daughter... and that father of mine never had the time to spend with the child. She never felt loved whilst having a father and mother they were both criminals to indulge themselves in work and leisure without sparing a second thought to the girl. What has she now an empty future, long nights crying for her baby. I can't see her that way" Soumya could gauge his anger that was bubbling within him his hands holding on to hers for emotional support. He needed to get it out of his system and she was willing to oblige. "Harman you can't undo the past" she had tried to relax him "Yes I can't but I can shape her future.. It's time she joined school again and finished her studies. I wish to see her independent to give it back to low lifes like Abhinav" he had growled his eyes trained on a smiling Raavi who had waved at him catching his eye and he had forced a smile in acknowledgment.
She was his responsibility and he would see to it that she got everything she wished for, she had been through enough pain... enough to last her a lifetime. He had closed his eyes again inhaling the fragrances of sweet smelling flowers, the partially wet soil, the dewy grass and her beside him. After a while Harman had found Soumya slumped against the tree trunk and he had thought it best to alleviate her of himself standing up he had picked her in his robust arms she had dozed off probably tired after her fruitful activities in the kitchen that morning. Raavi had come running up to him watching him leave "Raavi pick up the hamper and blanket I'm going to put her to bed" he had instructed and she had nodded folding the blanket and picking up the hamper she had followed her brother indoors. Once inside their bedroom he had laid her on the mattress covering her with the silken sheets as she slumbered undisturbed much to his relief. He watched her amorously love shining in his eyes tracing the slightly voluptuous mounds of flesh she had for lips and lowering himself in level with her had kissed her most assiduously.
Leaving her to rest he had taken to the laptop taking to a few chores he had left incomplete due to the pooja earlier in the day. The hands on the clock moved silently while he typed on the keyboard oblivious of time and space immersed in work consequently his phone had rung and he had walked out in the balcony so that Soumya may not be awoken on his account. "Yes Mr Patel any news on her?" he had asked his heart pounding like a piston. "I'm afraid sir the news is not very good" Patel's voice had floated from the ear piece his fists had balled querulously and he had held his breath as the detective had supplied him a complete account of her. "Thank you Mr Patel" he had heard himself say clicking the phone shut he had stood in the balcony for a very long time a lone tear escaping his heavy eyelids... why was fate so cruel.
