What is Payal's issue?

Hi All,
I watched today's episode and all I have to say is it made my blood boil.

No offense to any one here but Payal's monologue today really got under my skin.

She knows the Prasads are a bunch of phonies, she knows Dev technically wasn't party to the charades - staying with the Prasads means a lifetime of misery. They only want her around for her salary. Despite knowing ALL this she decides to hide the truth from her family and "sacrifice" her happiness for the "happiness" of her family. REALLY?!!!

Even if I give her the liberty of being in shock and not knowing what to do with her situation - she's clearly coherent enough to decide that she CAN'T tell her family the truth. Ok fine she couldn't talk to her mom or dad - but the brother - why can't she tell her brother?!

What exactly is Payal trying to prove here? How is her staying in that marriage going to make anyone happy? Sooner or later the charade will be up and the Rai's will find out the true colors of the Prasads.

What irritates me more is that under the pretext of "sanskar", "values", "patience" she's perpetuating wrong/evil. What kind of message is this - well educated girls with good jobs that are so principled and righteous become puppets upon matrimony?
That the mark of a "well brought up" girl is to quietly let her in laws walk over her?
Being well brought up doesn't mean that you do away with your dignity and justice.

Gulkand may be brash and foul mouthed - but she does the right thing and does not support injustice. Education is supposed to make one broad minded, worldly, see things from different perspectives and give one the tools to be able to judge good vs bad. It seems that Payal's education is only limited to books - Gulkand is exhibiting traits of an educated person (all though in a very different fashion since she's loud and foul mouthed) because she calls it as it is and she speaks up against injustice.

I was hoping SWB would be a progressive show with a good message but it seems the protagonist is turning into the typical bahu - who perpetuates patriarchy and can't seem to find her voice. This is not the Payal we met at the beginning of the show.

If the writers/makers are reading this - I implore you to turn this ship around fast. We need to see Payal deciding what she wants and having an adult conversation with Dev. None of this emotional blackmail garbage - and certainly none of this keeping up with the Jones syndrome.

Payal needs to find her voice, have an open, honest conversation with Dev and figure out their next steps.

Dev was completely right in all that he said today - they got married under assumed identities - he is not the person that her family thinks him to be nor is his family what they projected. Going back to the Prasads will be a nightmare for her. Based on her bewildered expression in the precap - she's obviously coming back with him but they need to have a plan.

It's utterly painful to see Payal being nice to the Prasads - they really don't deserve it and more over its sending the wrong message to viewers - oh ya they just lied about everything but hey its cool - let me play the perfect DIL part and win them over with my kindness - umm NO.

Extremely disappointed.

I'm confuse as well as to what is going on with her. We don't know what's going on in her mind, she hasn't even shown any kind of anger, does she plan to be a silent sufferer? The Prasad clan, minus Dev, has weaved a tangled web of lies and Payal walked right into them and got herself tangled. Seeing her actions one would call her an educated fool, filled with book knowledge but lacking common sense. Didn't Gul said somewhat words along these lines, she's educated but has no common sense?

As you said she could tell her brother. She can take him into confidence, besides Rajat has begun to sense that everything isn't alright. Furthermore, didn't she take the moral high ground with Rajat when he asked her to help him with getting something for his car business? Then why is she compromising with her moral value system in this matter? For her parents because she doesn't want them to know the true reality of the Prasads and the reality of her marriage?

Truth hurts and it can be like a bitter pill for some to swallow but people will love you more for telling them the truth rather than telling lies. Payal is making a mess of her life, if she continues lying and keeps holding on to the truth, those lies will become a noose around her neck, as well as Jug and company. As you said it isn't sending the right message but as ridiculous as it may seem, I guess cvs are holding true to form, Servicewali bahu.

My POV 😆

As of today... and more after watching yesterday's episode...my respect for DEV has doubled...he is clear and right in what he conveyed to Payal...Regarding Payal...I will reserve my comments...what she is trying to do ...is HIDE..the present situation - is WRONG...My personal thoughts on sanskar...especially... taking aashirwad... is not wrong from elders 'cause she is bowing to her in-laws...Dev's parent... and not for what they are..(forgot 2 share tis thot ).As only a day has gone by AFTER marriage...I would not like to corrupt my good thoughts on Payal (which is 50%) though I feel that with Dev's true and honest thoughts on marriage...V may see a change ( Confrontation scene today )...but not soon...cause this is drama.

Regarding Gul...all love her cause she is showing the true image of Prasad and very right with her thoughts...right on your face. I did feel like joining her 4 injustice done to her😉 especially when she gets trapped and that landed her in Jail...but definately not the way she reacts. I believe when you shout often the importance of conveying is lost instead allow your actions to speak louder and clear especially when she is a Mother. The problem according to me with Gul is she only thinks of revenge...now as someone pointed out very rightly here...if she indeed has problem with the family...she could have easily walked out with children ..Arguing and fighting is psychologically stressful ...especially children...Y is she not taking the step...cause ' aap ne DOWRY ley hai..mera haq yaha rehney ka aur yaha Gulkhand ka raj chalega'... now this goes against my thoughts and shift a little towards Payal.

We all appreciate what Gul did on THE wedding day...disclosing all to Payal with proof... now when the Jog family can take the shit with her never ending talks (which is right) ...The risk that she took...why didn't she disclose it ALL to Rai family ( using her clever tactics) / messaged the video to Dev AFTER /b4 ..the disclosure with Payal...( now don't tell me her bro was in her place in Jail and all...when that can be fooled to viewers why not this)...and why didn't she say that Dev is not involved in this drama b4 marriage...she conviently ignored that IMPORTANT point but just said woh berozgaar hai...Why...why...because she didn't want the marriage to happen and was afraid that Payal may marry based on that single disclosure...she wanted to take the revenge of her being trapped...so dear...I will not say her intentions are that good cause she knows that Dev is good. Is she not using Dev and Payal for her revenge ?

All I would like to say is WRITER is so involved in the mind games of JOG-AYO-GUL that the mind totally got corrupted and giving a different shape of Payal's role accordingly...in the name of drama. 😆

Would say ...though difficult 😆 ..have patience.

Excellent post dear 👏 A voice to be heard by writers😆.

I have not watched the last 2 episodes.
Nevertheless I would like to share my thoughts regarding Payal ' s attitude.

Yes Payal is educated, however she is a first generation female collegiate with a government job. I deliberately chose the term first generation, because they are individuals who are swimming against the tide. The currents of traditional behavior may pull them backwards when the forces are strong and wash upon them unexpectedly. Even though they may temporarily flow with the tide and appear regressive - they are not doomed. Sooner or later they will recognize their mistakes and change course to swim upstream.

@chitsri65 - thank you for your response!! It's always nice to hear what others have to say - you have raised some interesting points. I've highlighted (put in bold) from your response - what I'd like to address.

Regarding Payal touching the elders feet - I have to disagree with you. I'm not against showing respect to elders - but I am against touching feet of people that I have no respect for. Touching feet/seeking blessings are for people who you look up to, whom you respect, whom you hold in high regard - the Prasads have done nothing to earn that designation from my POV from Payal. Yes had she been unaware of what went on behind the scenes then sure - I wouldn't mind. However she knows, she's been shown proof - yet she's playing along. That to me is saying she's essentially condoning their actions - she's NOT one of them! She's much better and much more principled than that!
-The other logical explanation is that she's buying time to figure out how to deal with them and till then she's letting them have their glory. However Payal doesn't seem that smart/astute to be determining a POA - but hey she might surprise us.

Now coming to Gulkand - you've raised a few insightful thoughts here - I'll take them one by one.
The way I see Gulkand is that she is loud, foul-mouthed, short tempered etc but under ALL that I feel she is a) a VERY soft hearted person (soft hearted people tend to be very black and white) b) vulnerable c) passionate d) can't stand injustice.

Lets take a moment to revisit what we know of Gulkand - she was raised essentially single handedly by her older brother and possibly Bhabhi (depending on what age difference there is between the siblings) Her brother loves her very much and she loves him dearly - they've only had each other for the longest time. So perhaps she's also fiercely protective of him too - which is natural thinking that he's the only blood relation she has left in this world (from what we have been shown) Now - we have not been shown how Gul and Ayyo got married. It is safe to say the Prasads projected themselves to be something else and therefore demanded a hefty dowry - which for whatever reason Gul's brother saw fit to pay.

Now Gul/Ayyo get married and she comes to know they have essentially hoodwinked her brother - extracted a hefty dowry and are a bunch of phonies. Between the inability to tolerate injustice and the revelation that her brother (whom she loves so dearly) was cheated - she's furious and that fire is what causes all the venom to spew. I don't see it as "revenge" as much as I see it a burning desire to set the scales straight - like how dare they do this and get away with it. Imagine how it would feel when you see all these phonies spending your brother's hard earned money, living lavishly having hoodwinked a loved one - its a daily reminder of the injustice.

As for leaving with the kids - why? It's essentially her house, she pretty much paid for it all, leaving means she's giving up - seekers of justice like Gul can't walk away. She is totally justified in staying there and being a thorn in their side just like they are thorns to her.

Coming to Gul stopping the wedding. From the way I see it she really meant well - she didn't try to stop the wedding just to be vindictive but she figured out that the Prasads were hoodwinking the Rais - all the pieces came together when she talked to Dev when he called her while she was in jail. Telling Payal was the logical thing to do - she's the bride, the parents are inaccessible - running around with the wedding rituals etc but the Bride is in a room - Gul telling Payal was totally fair. I won't fault her there. Could she have disclosed it to the Rai family - perhaps but most importantly I think she felt it would make most sense to approach the person who's life is in question aka Payal. Could Payal have played the video clip and stopped the wedding - totally. Should Gul have played the clip - maybe but then again how was Gul to know that Payal would be THAT stupid to go thru with the wedding despite being informed of reality.
Gul not clearing Dev's name - we can't fault her there - technically she didn't know how involved or not involved he was for this scam. She figured that out on the muh-dekhai day.

So all in all I don't think Gul is using Dev-Payal as a part of her "revenge" plan but she really did want to make sure Payal doesn't get conned into a bad situation - like she did. The glorious by-product is that her in-laws don't achieve what they want - which is icing on the cake.
Gul is righteous in her own way - remember how she raised a voice and said how can Dev get married he doesn't earn. Then when Dev went to go meet Gul/Ayyo she told him that if he gets married he should stay separately if he wants to live peacefully - she cares and she means well.

Gul is the fitting personality for the Prasads - they totally deserve a firecracker like her to set them straight. If Payal thinks she can fix everything with her silence, values and "Sanskar" she has another thought coming - demons like the Prasads can't be tamed with kindness - they are in need of something much tougher.

Now coming to Payal and Gul - Payal is losing a great ally in Gul by pissing her off. In order to deal with the Prasads - Payal and Gul need to work together - but Payal playing the darling bahu is doing nothing but rub salt in Gul's wound - its almost like Payal is saying she WANTS to be one of the Prasads - that Gul can't tolerate especially after everything she did to disclose reality to Payal. Payal has some serious damage control to do.

One comment on Dev - i respect Dev as spoke very clearly to Payal about their relationship. HOWEVER I would have even more respect for him if he was man enough to tell Payal's family the truth. He had a moment with her Dad and he ALMOST disclosed the truth - her family was cheated - they deserve to know the truth. If Dev sat the parents down and told them the truth and then together they decide how to tackle the situation - dev and payal separate, move to a different city or what ever - be open and clear. That would be the mark of a true man - right now Dev is speaking to Payal clearly and he is full of remorse great - but no one has stopped to ask Payal what she wants!

This is a very nice post. Payal is the victim of her socialization, and therefore behaving in this way. It is easier for Gul to be outspoken because she has a different personality, and also because she was not raised by parents to be sanskaari.

Furthermore, cringeworthy as Payal's monologue was, what was surprising is that Dev is not outraged at his parents, brother and sister. He could have suggested that they live separately, right now on Payal's salary (in any case, Payal has to support all of them, so what is wrong in just supporting her husband till he is on his feet?), but he does not. Dev promises Payal's mother that he will take care of her and be by her side, but what is the use of being by her side, while she is surrounded by vultures?

Like Chitsri said, it might be too early to foresee what the Cvs have planned for the plot to move forward. Let us wait and see.

A huge thanks for giving a brilliant reply (hey U write so well yaar👏) but I stand on my views😆 as far as seeking blessings are concerned...when Payal has accepted the family (ofcourse for the usual known reasons...😡) , she will continue to do things the way that she feels is right. She is ready to face HER situation. The proof that Gul showed will be THE measured steps and HER experience will be THE PAYAL...we will come to know later. I think she believes...The greatest failure is the failure to TRY. All I will say is...let us see how writer..THE PASWAN😡 convince us...so far...a dissappointment.

I too agree totally with you regarding Gul being the perfect Bahu for Prasad....NO doubt there😉...my argument was just nd remains that she mixes her good intentions with the vengence in mind which IS not right...though she did right . This we will experience in the coming episodes...I may be wrong but am just expressing my thoughts. Another argument is ...being a mother of two children...what example she is setting for them, the pet names that she keeps addressing them and not to forget even teaching children...is definately a big NO..NO for me. Yesterday's episode...she should have walked out with her brother thus saving a wrong atmosphere for children. It is high time she should concentrate on HER family .. her kids future... Separation from family can bring THE change in Ayo especially if the children are not around and most important if AYO sees Payal-Dev together...he may realise his mistake. One must always TRY and TRY to bring Change...The only point which I 200% agree with GUL is being the perfect Bahu for Prasad and deserving too😆

Hey I have lost all my energy burning with these characters...I love only Mamaji😆

Thanks dear for the excellent post and must say you express it so so well...👏

hi guys - All the posts on this thread are interesting and lot of effort is put on character dissection.
No offences intended - my view point

Payal - a non serious girl with a casual attitude - no strong conviction for her rights.
Gul - Honest, open and straight forward girl - has clear understanding of right and wrong.
Dev - An ordinary immature guy with no superficial thinking. No intelligent girl would like to have a husband like him who can't see the drama happening in own house.

Prasad family would be the most interesting to watch and enjoy😊😊😊 initially but later it might turn to be irritating.

Rai family - A bunch of fools (including Payal) who will be the punching bag on this forum.

Now coming to Payal and her issue - She is type of a girl who wants to be nice to everyone except to herself - a traditional sacrificing character. CVs may change her character later but so far - she's not impressive and does not suit the title or theme of the show
