Tale of a jacket in Delhi polls: Who's richer—Rahul, Kejriwal or Modi?

By Kaushik Deka, India Today, January 27, 2025

The election campaign has spotlighted the Big Three's lifestyles and financial disclosures. They showcase contrasting trajectories of governance, image and public perception

· Delhi gears up for high-stakes assembly election with AAP, BJP, and Congress in fierce competition.

· Kejriwal faces criticism over lifestyle changes impacting his 'common man' image.

· Rahul Gandhi, richest among key leaders, focuses on reconnecting with grassroots.

Delhi, poised for yet another high-stakes assembly election, offers a unique battleground for political narratives. Arvind Kejriwal, the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) chief ministerial face, anchors his campaign on his governance record and the ‘guarantees’ of his government. Meanwhile, the BJP, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strategic pledges, pushes its guarantees to the forefront. The Congress, striving for relevance, pins its hopes on Rahul Gandhi and his ‘Nyay Yatra’ to woo Delhi’s voters.

Amid relentless campaigns to win voters’ favour, the lifestyle of political leaders has emerged as a recurring theme of social media scrutiny, with claims and counterclaims about their ostensible extravagance. Kejriwal, a former IRS (Indian Revenue Service) officer who rose to prominence championing simplicity and austerity, now finds himself accused of indulging in a lavish lifestyle.

Once mocked for his loose-fitting shirt, muffler and sandals, former Delhi chief minister Kejriwal is now seen in sleek puffer jackets—allegedly high-end—while the grand renovation of the chief ministerial residence has tarnished his ‘common man’ image, drawing sharp criticism from the Opposition. He is not alone in this predicament.

Rahul has also faced attacks for his designer jackets and shoes while even Prime Minister Modi’s sartorial choices have been dissected by critics, who allege a disconnect between his tailored wardrobe and his portrayal as a man of the masses.

The debate underscores the ever-present tension between image and perception in contemporary politics. Against this backdrop, an analysis of their personal wealth unveils another layer to their personas and campaigns, revealing stark contrasts in financial trajectories that echo their political personas.

Rahul, now leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, with assets totalling Rs 20.40 crore as per his 2024 Lok Sabha election affidavit, is the wealthiest of the trio. In sharp contrast, Kejriwal’s net worth, detailed in his 2025 assembly poll affidavit, makes him the least affluent at Rs 1.73 crore. However, when combined with his spouse Sunita Kejriwal’s wealth, their collective assets amount to Rs 4.24 crore, surpassing Modi’s total assets of Rs 3.02 crore, as declared in the prime minister’s 2024 Lok Sabha poll affidavit. This makes Modi the poorest among the three leaders in terms of personal and family wealth.

The last five years have seen Rahul’s wealth soar by Rs 4.51 crore and Modi’s by Rs 50.71 lakh. Kejriwal, however, has seen a decline—his wealth reduced by Rs 13.5 lakh—while Sunita’s wealth increased significantly during the same period.

To analyse their wealth, the affidavits submitted to the Election Commission (EC) for the last two elections they contested have been reviewed. For Rahul and Modi, the affidavits from the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections were examined while for Kejriwal, the affidavits from the 2020 and 2025 Delhi assembly elections were considered.

ARVIND KEJRIWAL

Kejriwal’s total assets declined from Rs 1.87 crore in 2020 to Rs 1.73 crore in 2025. Movable assets saw the sharpest drop, plummeting from Rs 9.95 lakh to Rs 3.46 lakh due to reduced bank deposits. The value of his immovable assets, primarily a property in Indirapuram in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, also decreased marginally to Rs 1.7 crore from Rs 1.77 crore in 2020.

In contrast, Sunita has seen her wealth rise from Rs 1.57 crore in 2020 to Rs 2.51 crore in 2025. The growth in her assets was driven by mutual funds, a Gurugram flat and other investments. Together, their combined wealth now stands at Rs 4.24 crore, an increase of Rs 80.33 lakh over five years.

RAHUL GANDHI

As the richest among the three, Rahul’s financial disclosures reflect significant growth. His wealth increased by Rs 4.51 crore, from Rs 15.89 crore in 2019 to Rs 20.40 crore in 2024. Movable assets saw a substantial surge, jumping from Rs 5.81 crore to Rs 9.25 crore. Investments in shares, bonds and mutual funds account for much of this rise.

Rahul’s immovable assets—agricultural land and commercial properties—rose modestly, from Rs 10.08 crore to Rs 11.15 crore. Meanwhile, his liabilities decreased from Rs 72.02 lakh to Rs 49.79 lakh over the same period, indicating better financial health. These figures mirror Rahul’s political trajectory: affluent yet striving to reconnect with grassroots realities through initiatives like the Nyay Yatra.

NARENDRA MODI

Modi’s asset disclosures reflect a different narrative—steady but restrained growth. His total wealth rose from Rs 2.51 crore in 2019 to Rs 3.02 crore in 2024, driven entirely by a near doubling of movable assets, including bank deposits and National Savings Certificates. His immovable assets, including a one-fourth share in a residential property in Gandhinagar declared in 2019, no longer feature in his 2024 affidavit.

Modi’s lack of personal real-estate or vehicle ownership aligns with his image of simplicity. This minimalistic approach to personal wealth—despite holding the country’s highest office—reinforces his narrative of serving the nation over self-interest.

A SHARED MINIMALISM

One notable similarity among Kejriwal, Rahul and Modi is their lack of vehicle ownership. Despite their varying financial standings and public personas, all three leaders have chosen not to own a car.

These financial trajectories are more than mere figures; they embody the essence of their political narratives. Kejriwal’s declining personal assets, juxtaposed with the rise in his spouse’s financial worth, highlight a paradox that has marked his political journey. Rahul’s growing wealth might invite allegations of privilege, yet he positions himself as India’s foremost advocate of social justice. Meanwhile, Modi’s measured financial growth and absence of personal real-estate reinforce his image of frugality and austerity.

As Delhi voters weigh guarantees, yatras and governance records, the wealth of their leaders offers a window into their lives, choices and values. These financial narratives are as much about politics as they are about the individuals who shape it.
