AMR Ramesh faces the camera again

Director AMR Ramesh will play an important role in his biopic on Veerappan as he has similarities to the character

The latest buzz doing the rounds about AMR Ramesh's upcoming film, "Attahasa", which is based on slain forest brigand Veerappan, is that the director himself is playing an important role in the film. Ramesh, who is currently shooting the final portions of the film, was last seen in the 1993 film Telugu movie "Aagraham". "In "Attahasa", I play Gurunath, who was one of Veerappan's close allies. As a matter of fact, the film takes an aggressive turn because of my character," says Ramesh.
Interestingly, Ramesh was not the original choice to play the role. "We were scouting for someone who looks like Gurunath to play him in the film. We auditioned several actors, but no one seemed convincing enough. When I went with my crew members to dig up some information about Gurunath, people in and around his village said I looked very much like him. They even found I had mannerisms similar to Gurunath's. That's when I decided to act in the film," explains Ramesh.
The director went all out to research his character and seems happy with the way the role has shaped up. "Gurunath's hometown is 3 km away from Veerappan's village. We've gathered so much information about him and I'm glad that it helped me perfect my role. I grew on a moustache and put on weight so that I would suit the character," he says.
So how did it feel to face the camera after so long? "I've acted in several films and documentaries. It was quite an experience to act after a long time," he signs off.
