Why do people think that you have to become a politician yourself to make change happen?

As far as I know...India has a 'responsible government'...it is a Westminster system of government we adopted from Britain.

It means that at the end of the day, the Parliament/Executive has to answer to the people. The people hold them all accountable.

Unfortunately, the 'people' have become so passive and so apathetic that this system of accountability, of governance is not working.

Stop blaming the MPs etc. Blame yourselves. If you start holding them all accountable...start protesting against the corruption that they do...start taking an interest IN the system...then the politicians WILL have to toe the line.

The public doesn't care. I've seen the MTV Roadies auditions where the participants had no idea of what was happening in India...let alone about the governing mechanisms.

The MP has NO power. We give him/her the power by voting them in...by remaining quiet when they commit questionable acts. It is our responsibility to reign them in. If we don't, then it is our fault.

And NO, I am not defending the MPs...but I am sick of everyone just thinking that you need to get into politics to change...OR...blaming politicians for everything.

Responsible Government is a great system of accountability. I wish Indians would use it to their advantage.

/rant.

agrre the Indians do not stand up for themself,,,..how will the politicians get a chance to fool us until we allow them to do so . and we are so obsessed with religion that before casting our vote the thing we see is 'is he of our religion...is he of our caste' etc etc. ppl happily rant that that congress has a gandhi lineage but they ignore the fact that the ppl trying to rule over us are not even Indian in true sense so how can they think of Indias goodwill. we need a mass awakening.

Aren't we confusing Politics with Leadership here.

Politics requires manipulating people, their thoughts and opinions. It implies using people for your ends. It requires saying one thing, meaning something else, actually doing a third thing with a fourth thing in mind. At the end of the day it's a circus - not the Gemini kinds but the Roman Gladiatorial kinds.

Nopes not interested in Politics at all. Come and ask me the same question when I'm Zem's age and maybe if I've succeeded in finishing off the current lot of scoundrels - I'll join :)

In a democracy, the people deserve the government they elect.

Don't think you have to join politics to change the system! There are several other ways you can be far more effective in bringing change.

politics would be the last thing I would ever consider.

Yes, getting into politics is not the only way to fix the system... But protesting is no better either! I'm totally anti-protest/dharnas/morchas etc. I would pick a JP over Anna Hazard* any day :)

ps: Will be back later to reply, duty calls. Beunas Mananas Peeps!

*pun intended.

I differ with you there!

I think dissent and protests are an integral part of any healthy democratic system. I completely disagree with the idea that as citizens we can only voice our opinions with our votes once every 4/5 years, during elections. That's a ludicrous idea of citizenship!

As a citizen, I have the right, indeed I have a duty (without being sentimental about it) to hold the people I helped elect accountable for their policies *during* their tenure.

Protests are a part of that.
