So being a politician alone would make India a true developed and progressive country?...nah never in a million.

Though if we as an individual and as citizen of this country are in touch with our social, moral and civic duty, we would be better place to bring reforms in their truest from.

My 9th class sst lesson highlighted how ours is- by the people, for the people and from the people, democracy
...underlining the people participation in every form.

Being a responsible and aware citizen , electing an effective candidate and being an active part of society is what upholds the democracy.

An elected member has a set duration at the office but it is the bureaucratic and public participation which remains constant, if we are able to iron out inefficiency and and remove the "chal raha hai" attitude at these level we would contribute more.

Being aware and assertive citizen doesnt mean slogan shouting or strikes at every instant but it means to question the govt policies and being aware about them.Use RTI, raise concerns and doubts regarding the policies but dont undermine the authority of Indian parliament, coz it is also the will of the people.

Right now it is essential if individually whatever we might do or be in our lives but if we have our morals and responsibilites towards society and country in place , we would be doing more than enough..

Just curious to know, how many Anna Hazards and how many JPs we have on this forum! 😃

I answered the Poll question in my first post. Responding to the issues you raised on this one :)

Most often I feel like a housewife who has returned home after a month long vacation - and sees dust everywhere and everything needing to be set right.

Yes things are breaking down and we see a number of issues that need to be addressed. But you know what I feel hopeful too.

20 years ago, I was looked upon as an oddity because I chose to have a career over marriage. Today most girls are following that route - making financial independence their first priority.

20 years ago, no one would think of protesting against dowry demands, or killing of the female child. No one would get up and say discriminating on the basis of religion or caste is wrong. I remember there was a time when there would be Hindu-Muslim riots every year in states like UP, Bihar, Andhra, etc. Today you don't see all that.

20 years ago, my father taught me how to give a bribe when I go to get a contract from a govt. office. Today's generation is inspired by Munnabhai and Hazare.

20 years ago, there was the Tandoor Murder case and the Syed Modi murder case - no one thought of protesting, despite knowing who the culprits were. Today the youth takes to the streets for Jessica Lal.

20 years ago, when Shah Bano won alimony from her husband the Govt. went and changed the laws denying every Muslim woman the right to Alimony. Today I doubt any political party can get away with that.

Kehne ka matlab yeh hai - There are changes in society, things that were rotting are being addressed. And they are being addressed by public will and opinion. The political framework remains unchanged. The pressure that the public exerts on the politicians has totally changed in its dynamics. And I see more public activism in the future rather than less.

To bring about change, one does not need to enter politics. Remember there are less than a hundred thousand politicians in India. The population is far larger and it is beginning to find its voice.

What is required to bring the change however, is that the common people who can think and are not led astray by sloganeering should not keep quiet. There is an old proverb - when the wise man keeps quiet, truth and justice die.

I would definitely enter politics in the future. But that has a lot of time as there are loads of things I need to learn yet.
By joining politics I dont mean contesting as MLA or MP. But I want to join a party like Lok Satta and add my service as much as possible.

one question
how many of us go to vote? and how many of us vote for one of the more publicised parties? I do. Am not sure why i dont think that maybe the independent candidates would be better or wud do something worthwhile. Does one vote make a difference, i strongly feel, it does Not.
Hence, its either BJP or Congress or BSP or somebody else.
I dont mean to attack any of these parties right now but i feel my opinions are very one sided and my votes are pretty much worthless.

I wanted to do LLB a few weeks back, even right now i want to do it, but am not sure if i can help someone with that degree. :-/

Casting your vote is important, it is not just your vote to a particular candidate, it is one less illegal vote cast in your name to a rowdy candidate. I've always urged everyone to go to the polling station and cast their vote, even if it is an invalid vote - but do go to the polling station and make your presence felt. More than your right, in these days it is your duty.

Regarding your LLB, please do go for it - you can do so much good with it. Join an NGO to help out the needy, if needed. Act as a consultant for those who need guidance. Work on RTI and other related rights issues. In fact so many times I wonder if I should go back and get that Law degree.

I had always thought of joinig army or navy to serve the country...Politics is not a field where we can do anything..even if we wants to...There are ministers who are capable of stopping all evil deeds in our society..but due to political pressures, and other various reasons, they are also shunned to one side..In any system, there is no need to join politics for fighting for justice..any person can do that...Politics is made for man, for his benefit...We are not bound by politics...

Have you read the news that occurs in various parts of the world that even if a crime happens in front of our own eyes, even if someone call out for help, no one or nobody goes to help them...because they are thinking its something the police must do or shouts for politicians to come and rescue...

Why don't you make a poll asking "how many of you think your nation as your own?" a poll to ask "how many of you will stop by car to help someone bleeding on road? " or another one to ask "how many of you will stop thinking that its the politicians or law's duty to do all things and not ours..?'

Its our place..and making it dirty..or clean..all depends on us,..the people living in that place.not only politicians and law's...

Note- No offense to anyone..just expressing my POV...

nice post- I am already involved at our local level- school board committees (good way to be part of the local government here in America). It is amazing just how few people actually DO anything! Very few have a vision and fewer still the skills to implement that vision! Leadership across the board is something hard to come by.
