My two cents worth!

One of the most moving and shocking books I've read recently was "We Need To Talk About Kevin" by Lionel Shriver...her other books were RUBBISH...and despite the masculine name the author IS a woman!

My family and Other Animals, as well as All Creatures Great and Small - abs favs. So was Marley and Me. reminded me of my own psychotic dog.

Haven't read Paul Gallico. That's one for my book list amongst others.

World According to Garp - the copy I have was gifted to one of my BF's by his ex-GF. I borrowed it from him to read, without knowing its history. Was alfway through when he told me, how he got the book - to cut a long story short - I HATE THE BOOK.

Lionel Shriver - on my booklist :)

I hate reading library books, so have this huge collection. I invariably end up buying half a dozen books every time I enter a book store. When I was in a regular job, I used to set aside 10% of my income for books.

If you haven't come across his writing before, please find something by Malcolm Muggeridge.

Impeccable English and VERY dry sense of humor!

No I said that I've been inclined towards fiction from childhood onwards. Read very little non-fiction. But do promise to look up Muggeridge.

I LOVED The World According to Garp!-if you can get over your distaste do read it!! In fact I read everything he wrote after that-obsessively!They were all good but nowhere near his first one!

NOOO! Best to ignore & hope she will disappear!! I stopped my annual subscription to Outlook-once Vinod Mehta made it a habit to give her regular space to air her brain out! I think VM had a crush on her!!!!

AR was the reason I broke up with this person who lent me Garp. He usually had good taste in books. We used to call each other up and discuss books till late in night. Once he got into this habit of calling me up and 3 am and reading passages out of Hitchhiker's Guide to Galaxy. Practice didn't stop till I actually bought the book and read it from start to finish.

Anyway I discovered he liked AR. When he said, he was fascinated with her - I forgave it as minor aberration in judgement.

When he said he wanted to feel the outline of her skull, I even offered to procure it for him personally. Seriously couldn't think of a better use for that thing on her shoulders, except as an ash-tray.

Then he was like "I want to feel it, so I can make out what's inside"; being the polite person that I am I told him that feeling the outline of a coconut does not tell one how much water it carries.

Then he compared her to me. I was like I've never been so insulted in my life; and he couldn't understand why.
That seriously was the last straw.

God of Small Things -
Take a classic like "To Kill A Mockingbird". Massacre it.
Add bits about India that even E.M.Forster would puke at.
Spend 5 full pages describing what an "aangan" is. Fail to establish its significance in the story.
Forget that Kerala homes do not have "Aangans" so it's not irrelevant anyway.
Raid R.K.Laxman. Massacre Malgudi Days
Snort Cocaine.Type some more trash.
Get it all published. Get a Booker Prize.
Booker commits suicide in whatever heaven he is in.

@Chitrashi,

Just couldn't stop laughing, but seriously "feeling AR's skull " uhmmm gives new meaning to stranger things!

What's the take on Rushdie, Coelho and Naipaul? I for one remain conflicted but am damn sure Alchemist was a very overrated book!

Wasn't MIA, was watching "Zindagi Ki haqeeqat se aamna saamna" with Mom. It is seriously the stupidest attempt at a reality show. The stories and situations are sooo contrived, and such bad actors. Almost like watching a Bhojpuri serial.
