Haven't read Rushdie. Nor Naipaul. Haven't been inclined to ever. Actually don't much like Indian writers in English. Feel that they would do a much better job in their native languages.

Coelho has written two good books - Eleven Minutes and Veronica Decides to Die. Very simple stories, but excellent nevertheless. Alchemist reminds me of Aesop's fables.

we need a thread for AR, just so that i can remove her from my head!

Normally I dont dig Dad's recommendations , his books test all my patience but I am very tempted to read "Tuesdays with Morrie" and 1984 by George Orwell, I thing I will sccumb to them soon!

Also on list is -In search of Sita,

A little fun fact , Shakespeare first used the worry hurry!

You should read Tuesdays with Morrie and 1984 ASAP. They are absolute must reads.

Haven't read In Search of Sita - my book list grows :)

@CHitrashi,

Liked veronica decides to die, emotionally draining

I also dont get the sadistic pleasure these Indian writers in English derive at the expense of India.I mean social commentators like Dickens and Thackeray so brilliantly used fiction to paint a true social picture of their times.

Has anyone read the 50 shades of grey, whats the deal about it, seems sex sells in literature as well?

AR was the reason I broke up with this person who lent me Garp.
DRAT!You are NOT going to read a good book because of a MAN you dumped! TSK,TSK
He usually had good taste in books. We used to call each other up and discuss books till late in night. Once he got into this habit of calling me up and 3 am and reading passages out of Hitchhiker's Guide to Galaxy. Practice didn't stop till I actually bought the book and read it from start to finish.
At least he had good taste there!

Anyway I discovered he liked AR. When he said, he was fascinated with her - I forgave it as minor aberration in judgement.

When he said he wanted to feel the outline of her skull, I even offered to procure it for him personally. Seriously couldn't think of a better use for that thing on her shoulders, except as an ash-tray.
You did tell him that,didn't you?!

Then he was like "I want to feel it, so I can make out what's inside"; being the polite person that I am I told him that feeling the outline of a coconut does not tell one how much water it carries.
I'm glad that you are getting better at controlling your polite streak! I'm actually AMAZED that you haven't displayed it on the thread by the pest!!

Then he compared her to me. I was like I've never been so insulted in my life; and he couldn't understand why.
That seriously was the last straw.
He didn't love his life?!Reckless fellow!

PS=My Internet keeps flickering off...so if I disappear it will be because of that-not because I lost interest.

Please JUST read just three books by Indians writing in Eng,Please!
A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry.
Golden Gate by Seth-read NOTHING else by him.
Any of Rushdie's book.
NEVER Naipaul.
Don't like Coelho-never got past the simplistic first one.But I will give both another a shot...at your recommendation.

Reverse snobbery? Write in their own language? Rushdie writes better than almost all the Western writers today-my two cents!!

OH MY!! I watched it too! Some friend of a friend is in a similar situation...so I watched.Is this an attempt to do a cut rate K Bedi?! It REALLY is all SOOO contrived...

@znursingh,

Agree Rushie is outstanding but sumhow I get visuals of him having a threesome with Padma Lakshmi and Riya Sen, why and how absurd, I know but there seems to be no cure.

Reverse snobbery, I dont know but I just dont like authors sexifying poverty in India to become literary stars case in point Naipaul and AR. I prefer the likes of CHitra Bannerjee , fearless writing and redefining Indian literature.
Have read ony A suitable boy by VS, truely a Booker worthy book.

Recently rewatched the movie "The count of Monte Cristo" , it takes so many liberties but both book and movie are just outstanding!

CB's first book was great-the next ones were a bit of a let down and got a bit repetitive.Manju Kapur wrote a lovely book called Difficult Daughters.There is another WONDERFUL book called "Listen Now"written by Anjana Appachan. I did not like ASB-seemed like a LOOONG M&B and a real let down after The Golden Gate

Recently rewatched the movie "The count of Monte Cristo" , it takes so many liberties but both book and movie are just outstanding!

AGREE!

@znursingh,

See that visual has ruined whatever chance I had for enjoying SR,My apologies for sharing this travesty.

By the way has anyone seen Barkha Dutt's interview with muhammad hanif, author of Our Lady of Alice Batti, he had this sexy and yet charming wit going for him which almost made read his books, sigh had a crush on him that lasted a week.
