THE PROPHECY - PART 4
By Archana Vinod
FLASHBACK SCENE CONT'D:
THE NEXT DAY
Siddhant takes a casual walk around town with the sole intention of finding the truth to the statement in the book. He still can't figure out who wrote the book. Who is it that knows each and every thing about him? His deepest fears, his darkest secrets, his weaknesses, strengths...
He still doesn't believe whatever he read. But his curiosity has got the better of him. He must find the truth. Moreover, he came across many other statements in the book which were true. Such as:
2ND June, 1989
Back to School
Monsoons mean the world to you. You love the beautiful uplifting fragrance of freshly wet sand, the bubbling sound of streams flowing over glazed pebbles, the cool, cozy atmosphere and the irresistible urge to eat pakodas. Not to mention, you were always in a hurry to get away from school, hurry back home and get your hands on those delicious golden mangoes on Ramu Kaka's tree.
Siddhant smiles. Those days were fun. In fact, he got caught red-handed by Ramu Kaka once. Better not to delve on the torrent of abuse which followed later and the massive headache it gave his parents!
SIDDHANT: (narration) All these weird things started happening around ten days back. It was so hard not to believe in the book. Everything detailed about my past and present was so accurate.
Siddhant comes across nothing spectacular and finally walks into the library.
The librarian, a short balding man in his 60's, smiles at his most regular customer.
LIBRARIAN: Back so soon?
SIDDHANT: Yeah, long weekend, so decided to pick two more.
LIBRARIAN: Sure, go ahead.
Siddhant proceeds to the "fiction" section and begins to browse the shelves for something interesting.
As he does, his forefinger comes to rest on a book called as "Soul Mate" by Paul Pillsbury.
The title reminds him of what he read in "The Prophecy" last night:
"She will enter your life like a gust of fresh mountain breeze, weave and bind onto your soul and never let go for lifetimes to come... When the time comes, nothing on Earth can stop you two from meeting, no matter where you are. And when the time comes, you'll know that it is her."
Siddhant simply nods, amused.
Yeah right, he thinks sarcastically. Go on oh mighty universe. I'm here right before you. Go on and give me a sign.
He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath.
Are you listening to me, universe? If you aren't, you'd better. Here's the thing - when I open my eyes, I want to see my soul mate. Show me if you dare. I'm ready now!
He turns around and opens his eyes. His blurred vision slowly comes to focus on ---
--- AN OLD AUNTY IN HER 60'S.
Siddhant smirks and turns away, amused. Oh boy, I'll be bummed if THAT'S my soul mate. Sheesh!
SIDDHANT: (mutters to himself) I knew that it was a load of crap. Hah. I should have retur---
The sudden noise of TOPPLING books alarms him.
He looks around and finds the old aunty crouching over a load of books on the floor.
SIDDHANT: Oh jeez, big mess.
Siddhant prepares to help her but stops dead on his tracks as his eyes fall on the gorgeous young woman bending over the books.
He just stands there speechlessly. What's this? What happened to me? Go and help that aunty you idiot.
But he just can't move from his spot. He watches her intently - her brilliant smile, her glossy black hair flowing down her shoulders like a river of satin, her rosy cheeks, her perfect curves draped in a brilliant blue churidhar...
Suddenly --- Roli looks him in the eye.
The abrupt, unexpected attention from her warm, black, sparkling eyes knocks the wind out of his guts and leaves him breathless. He quickly looks away, his heart pounding and crushing within his chest.
Good lord, what the hell is this? What on earth happened to me? I've never felt like this before. This is a new feeling.
He unintentionally fiddles with a book on the shelf as he struggles to contain his nervousness and confusion.
Is she looking at me, he wonders. Why's that I feel as if she's looking at me?
He glances over at Roli once again. And this time, she flashes a warm smile at him!!
OOF! He turns away breathlessly. It's that weird tingling feeling again! His whole being is flushed red!
I need to get out of here, he thinks. But he can't even move an inch. His muscles seem to be frozen. His feet seems to have been glued to the floor with Fevicol!
Roli, who managed to gather up the books goes on her way and walks past Siddhant. He quivers a bit as the beautiful scent emanating from her being hits him in the face like a gust of fresh mountain breeze.
Could it be, wonders Siddhant as he absentmindedly browses through one of the books he retrieved from the shelf. Is she my soul mate? The words of The Prophecy run through his mind again:
"And when the time comes, you'll know that it is her."
SIDDHANT'S APARTMENT - THE SAME NIGHT
Siddhant's newly borrowed books fails to pique his interest as it remains ignored in a short stack on his night table. All of his attention is poured into the pages of The Prophecy.
He is awe struck at the accuracy of its words. True to the dot! So what happens after that, he wonders as he flips through the pages.
But he's not prepared for what comes next:
"12th May, 2015
You will be a protector and savior to your soul mate in the coming days. Deadly perils will litter your path day and night and the both of you will be on the run. In spite of these challenges, you will continue to rescue her from grave danger and go on to become a national figure."
Siddhant is deeply disturbed.
Protector and savior? Me?
Deadly perils?
Grave danger?
Though he has had only a glimpse of the girl, his heart begins to ache in a dull, monotonous tone. Why's that I feel so attached to her already? Have I really been given a sign by someone up there?
But what's in store for her? He begins to look through the book for clues.

Incoming message on his phone.
He picks it up and opens the Facebook message from "Old Monk":
"Siddhant, they're coming 4 Poonam. Her life is in danger! Get her out of there fast!"
Poonam? Who the hell is Poonam? And why is this message being sent to me?
He browses through the profile of "Old Monk". Strangely, he has only a handful of friends on his list with names as weird as his...
Bagpiper
Seagull
Caesar
Seems like he's an alcoholic? He has used names of all branded liquors. Crazy bugger!
He has no interests, nothing... He hasn't even mentioned any details about himself. Such a dull and bland profile. Obviously looks fake. Weirdo.
He prepares to delete the message but pauses as the words of The Prophecy ring in his head again:
"12th May, 2015
You will be a protector and savior to your soul mate in the coming days. Deadly perils will litter your path day and night and the both of you will be on the run. In spite of these challenges, you will continue to rescue her from grave danger and go on to become a national figure."
Is it a sign? The Prophecy has been true to the core all this while, never failed to impress me. Maybe I should listen to it again.
He opens his Facebook and begins to search for all the "Poonams" in Mumbai. Could it be the same girl I saw at the library today?
One by one, he checks all the profiles he comes across:
Poonam Bajwa...
Poonam Bharadwaj...
Poonam Bhatia...
Poonam Gandhi...
Poonam Joshi...
But a certain profile catches his attention.
POONAM BHATIA
His hands become a sweaty mess as he opens Poonam Bhatia's profile. His head pounds madly and his vision blurs. This is crazy! This really can't be happening. How is this even possible?
The girl in the profile picture...
--- is the same he saw at the library. Roli - his soul mate!
