THE PROPHECY - PART 3

Roli's gaze wanders outside the coffee shop for a split second and comes to rest on Nisha. She waves at Roli and flashes a "thumbs up" sign.

Roli nods and rolls her eyes disapprovingly before moving on to Siddhant once again.

Siddhant on the other hand is nervous. Make that very nervous! He has no clue of how to begin.

SIDDHANT: I owe you an apology for what happened yesterday.

Roli looks at him briefly with an "oh! Is this the big thing you were dying to tell me?" look on her face.

ROLI: (in a casual tone) You owe me one for today as well.

SIDDHANT: (blurts out) And a lot many other days.

ROLI: (stunned) "A lot many other days"? What do you mean? Wait a minute --- for how long have you been following me?

SIDDHANT: (more nervous) --- more than a week.

Roli is seething now.

This guy had been stalking me for almost two weeks? Unnoticed? Watching each and every move I make? God! What a jerk! Ughhh!!!

ROLI: (in anger and disbelief) You're kidding me right?

SIDDHANT: I'm afraid not.

Roli is dead quiet. From her expression, Siddhant can make out that she's pissed off big time!

SIDDHANT: I'm sorry; it's just that I wanted to tell you something.

Her curiosity begins to drown out the anger.

ROLI: (coldly) Go ahead.

Siddhant quickly reaches down into his jeans, pulls out his cellphone and starts to scroll through his Facebook messages.

I wonder what he's up to, wonders Roli curiously.

SIDDHANT: Ok. There it is.

Without realizing it, he pulls himself uncomfortably close to her whilst resting his hands on the table.

Roli cringes and instantly withdraws.

SIDDHANT: (pauses, embarrassed) Erm... sorry. (offers his phone after keeping a comfortable distance) Just take a look at this.

She takes it from him with the message from "Old Monk" wide open:

*** Siddhant, they're coming 4 Poonam. Her life is in danger! Get her out of there fast! ***

Roli's brows narrow. Why is the message for Papa sent to his phone?

Siddhant watches her intently as he anxiously waits for an answer. But she continues to remain silent.

SIDDHANT: I know that it looks like a joke. To be honest, I shrugged it off at first, until...

Roli looks up.

SIDDHANT: ...Until I realized that it may be true. Because---

It is then that Roli notices the book in Siddhant's hand - a thick and beautiful yet simple book bound in a chocolate leather jacket with jet black borders. The title of the book "The Prophecy" is carved into the centre in gold letters.

SIDDHANT: --- because of this.

Siddhant hands over the book to Roli who begins to flip through slowly. Her eyes dart across paragraphs, grasping each and every single word.

SIDDHANT: Do you remember seeing this book? I had borrowed it from your library.

Roli looks at him briefly and nods.

ROLI: (quietly) Yes. I think it's a new entry.

SIDDHANT: Yeah. It was just a novel at first. But when I reached home---

FLASHBACK SCENE:

SIDDHANT'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

After dinner, Siddhant eagerly tucks into bed to read "The Prophecy" under the light of his table lamp.

He opens it and flips the title page over. He flips back and forth in search of the author's name but finds nothing.

SIDDHANT: (mutters to himself) Weird. How come they haven't published the author's name? (gives up the search) Whatever!

He flips to the contents page... BLANK.

What the hell? Siddhant is baffled. Is this a rejected copy?

He flips over again. But what greets his eyes knocks the wind out of him.

A New Sunshine

You breathed your first on a beautiful spring evening. Your mother had undergone a difficult labour but all were exhilarated and dying to welcome you as the first born. The nurse cradled your bloody body in her arms, wiped you clean and showed you to your parents.

Siddhant pauses. What the hell is this? An astrological report? What happened to the Prophecy? I've been dying to read that! I swear I'm going to kill that librarian!

He flips through the pages furiously. Is the entire book like this? Nonsense!

He stops at the last page.

Over the horizon

Age 77. You are old and dying alone in a hospital room. You have no children and no one by your side. However, you are happy. You are eager to reunite with your beloved soul mate after a long wait of four decades.

Siddhant feels a cold shudder travel down his spine. What is this book? And who the hell wrote it? Who is it that knows so much about me? He flips through blankly.

A lot of questions buzz in his mind. Reunite with my soul mate after a long wait of four decades?

Siddhant is curious to know about his soul mate now. But why reunite with her after four decades? Did she die so early? And does she get to be my life partner as well?

He eagerly turns back the pages. And then he sees it...

Maybe this is all a joke. Maybe I shouldn't get carried away. But who knows? Let's see. Whatever it is, I'm going to get to the bottom of this.
