THE CELEBRITY - PART 16
An original story by Archana Vinod
Siddhant turns on the ignition and races the engine for a moment as if he is expecting something to happen. And sure enough, Roli hops into the front seat beside him.
Prem stands at the doorway and watches sadly as they drive away.
A while later, Sid pulls up his car close to the temple and step out. Roli follows suit.
Sid prays intently for a while and takes a brief glance at Roli before leaving. Her eyes are closed and lost in prayer and ... pain. Siddhant feels sorry for how he had reacted a while ago. Maybe I should have just apologized for what I did and left. I shouldn't have got so angry... especially at Roli. She hasn't done anything wrong. Instead, she took so much care of me when I was knocked out. I have put her through enough already. But it's a promise I made, I will make it up to her. And today is that day. He steps out of the temple and waits for Roli.
Just then, he spots a vendor passing that way with cotton candy. Hmm. Roli likes cotton candy. Kiddo. I'll get her one. That should cheer her up. He stops the vendor and gets two of them. Suddenly -
BAAAWOOO - BAAAWOOO - BAAAWOOO - BAWWWOOO
They jump out of their skin! What the hell is that blaring sound!
It's Roli! Outside the car with her ears clamped shut. And she looks petrified! She had tried to open the car's door without unlocking it and it had set off the burglar alarm! Siddhant quickly unlocks the car with his remote. It stops. Whew!
He is beside Roli now, glaring at her furiously. She is shaking now.
"Roli, what's wrong with you? Don't you know you shouldn't open the car like that?" he blasts at her. Roli is so petrified that she looks like she will cry any minute.
"Get in the car and sit there! And don't touch anything! I don't want to see this car rolling down the street for God's sake!"
She quietly gets in the car and sits there feeling a little dazed. I just want to get home as soon as possible, she thinks sadly. It's so hard to be near Siddhantji when he is angry. It makes me feel so uncomfortable.
Siddhant gets in and closes the door. He glares at Roli as he adjusts himself. She can't meet his gaze and looks away. A smile starts to spread across Siddhant's face. Aw, she looks so cute when she sulks, he thinks.
"Here you go," he says seriously as he passes her the cotton candy. She quietly takes it from him, but doesn't touch it. She looks away out of the window. Oh dear, he thinks, she's definitely upset. That's okay; she's going to cheer up soon.
"Arrey! What happened to your face? Something bit you kya?" he asks, concerned.
Roli turns to look at him, surprised. What could have happened? She touches her face cautiously. Maybe something bit me?
"I mean... it's as big as a pumpkin. So I thought that something could have bitten you," he jokes.
Ohh... That's when Roli gets it. He was just pulling my leg. Siddhant bursts out laughing but she quickly looks away. That was funny, but she doesn't want to laugh though she feels like it.
He starts the car and begins to drive. A while later, they drive into the parking lot of MADRAS CAF, a fancy South Indian restaurant. Roli looks around a bit surprised. Why have we stopped here? I thought that we were going home, she wonders.
Siddhant notices the question mark all over her face. He unbuckles his seat belt. "Today we'll have some South Indian breakfast," he says cheerfully, "just for a change. What do you say? Nice fluffy idlis, crispy dosas and some tangy sambar! Wah! I can smell it already! Ready?"
They step out of the car, walk into the restaurant and find a table. The place is already high on traffic. Siddhant browses through the menu while Roli sits there quietly with her cotton candy. "So what will you have?" he asks her.
"Anything," she mumbles quietly.
"I didn't hear you," he says.
"Anything," she repeats firmly.
"Sorry, what?" he leans a bit forward now.
She sighs. "Anything," she repeats again.
"What? I can't hear you? Be a bit louder!" he leans close enough to plant a quick kiss on her cheek and sit back. Roli is dumbfounded and speechless. She looks around the restaurant as she hopes that no one saw what happened. "Are you mad or what?" she begins, "if somebody -"
But he cuts her off with a cheeky grin and a wink. Awww no! This is it! She quickly looks away as she blushes like crazy!
"Be careful. Don't blush too much. Or else they'll think that you're a beetroot and put you in the sambar."
"Ho-ho, very funny," she remarks sarcastically.
"Wow! So you knew how to talk?" he says, "That's amazing!"
"Shut up!" she chuckles as she looks away.
Just then, a steward stops by. "What would you like to order?" he asks politely.
Sid looks at Roli. "How about idlis with sambar and chutney?"
"Your wish," she replies.
"Fine, two," he places the order. They casually look around the restaurant. It is packed to full capacity already.
Siddhant drums his fingers on the desk softly as he sings in a low voice, "Tujhe dekha toh yeh jaana sanam, pyaar hota hai deewana sanam."
"You know Roli," he begins, "this morning I discovered an excellent home remedy for constipation."
"Hmm. What's that?" she asks.
"The results are instant. You don't need anything else. Just one Kumar Sanu song."
"Huh?" she's puzzled. What has Kumar Sanu got to do with this?
He makes a funny face as if something is stuck somewhere and begins to sing again in an uncanny funny impersonation of Kumar Sanu's voice. "Tujhe dekhaaa... toh yeh jaaannaaa sanammm"
Roli bursts out laughing.
Siddhant groans as if he's actually there'. "Pyaaar hota hai..."
"Stop!" Roli laughs, "come on! Don't make fun of Kumar da! He's an awesome singer! And those are one of my all time favourites!"
"I'm not making of him yaar, even I'm a big fan of Kumar da's songs. It's just all that pressure if you know what I mean."
Roli laughs like anything now.
"Before singing, just make sure that you don't need to go or something. You could end up in big trouble!"
"Hahahahahaha!" she's red in the face now.
"Oye beetroot. They're coming to put you in the sambar. Just chill."
"Let's just wash and sit," she says.
"Yup. Come on."
They move off to the wash area.
Sid and Roli wash up and prepare to move off to their tables. Just then --
"Roli?" someone taps her on the shoulder. She turns around to see a very handsome guy with sharp features standing in front of her. He seems to be in his early 30's. "Is that you?" he asks.
She looks at him puzzled. Where have I seen him? I know this guy"
Who could it be? Let's find out...
