THE CELEBRITY - PART 19
An original story by Archana Vinod
Siddhant and Roli are behind the crowd now. He makes sure that he has locked his pinky finger securely with Roli's. He cranes his neck to see what the rumpus is about. The man standing just in front of Siddhant notices him and his eyes almost pop out of his skull.
"Wait a minute, are you"" he begins with disbelief.
Uh-oh! Siddhant realizes that he forgot a very important fact. He can't be roaming around like a free bird like the good old days! He's a celebrity now! Anyone would recognize him! And if they do, he's going to have a very tough time!
"You're Siddhant Bharadwaj!" the man cries out.
"Hey," Siddhant smiles awkwardly.
The man trembles in excitement. He jumps on his toes like a little toddler who is happy at having seen a toy for the first time. "It's Siddhant Bharadwaj!" he informs everyone at the top of his voice.
Oh no! Roli looks around frantically! We're screwed! Big time!!!
One by one, heads start to turn. "Siddhant Bharadwaj?"
"S-Siddhant Bharadwaj!!!"
"Actor Siddhant Bharadwaj????"
"You mean Aditya?!?"
Girls start to shriek at the top of their lungs. "Sidddhaaanttt!"
A short, bald man in a suit comes out of the crowd. "What a co-incidence Mr. Bharadwaj!" he cries out as he shakes hands with Siddhant, "I was so worried! So-so worried! Because today was supposed to be a wonderful day! It's the grand opening of my textile shop! And my special guest of honour backed out at the last moment! I was wondering what to do, until now!"
Siddhant smiles warmly. I wonder what he wants from me, he wonders. Roli is as lost.
"If you don't mind, sir, could you please inaugurate my shop? It would be a great honour!"
Siddhant is touched. He doesn't know what to say. "Well, ermm..."
"I promise I won't keep you for long! Being a special guest, you get to shop here and win some exciting prizes and discounts!"
Siddhant glances over at Roli. What do you think, he gestures with his eyes.
Roli nods with a smile. Carry on, she gestures back.
"I'd be delighted," he replies.
"Amazing!" the shop owner cries.
The crowd applauds in excitement. Siddhant and Roli walk towards the entrance where a glossy red ribbon is pulled taut across the doorway, ready to be inaugurated.
"Siddhant - Siddhant - Siddhant- Siddhant," chants the crowd.
Roli is on cloud 9 now. Look at them, she thinks. They're mad about him! She sighs with a big smile as she watches her husband prepare to cut the ribbon.
SNIP! The ribbon is severed! The crowd breaks into applause.
The shop owner takes Siddhant and Roli around the shop. It's a fresh and grand feeling inside. Everything so fresh and painted in a mellow cream... The shop is packed with mind blowing fabrics. Sid and Roli enjoy some great shopping together.
They're browsing through a diverse variety of saris. Siddhant places the sari one by one over Roli and steps back to have a better look. "Wow!" he whistles. Roli blushes.
"Can't make up my mind, you look good in everything!" he exclaims.
"Really?" Roli smirks, "that's not what you told me after our marriage." She is referring to that fine day when Sid took Roli for shopping and had lots of fun disapproving her choices.
"What did I tell you then?" he asks.
"You said that not every sari would suit me", she pretends to sulk.
"Haha! I was just pulling your leg then baba, you know that right?" he quips.
"Yeah, I know," she winks.
They're at the bill counter now. "Good thing that the car broke down," he whispers to Roli, "we had some fun, right?"
"Yes, I guess everything happens for the best. We did have lots of fun."
"More fun is coming up," he smiles.
"What's that?" she asks, surprised.
Just then, the shop owner approaches Siddhant. "Mr. Bharadwaj, we have arranged a car for you. The chauffeur will drop you off."
"Oh, thank you so much, mister..."
"Rajput," says the shop owner.
They are guided to the entrance and taken to their car.
INSIDE THE CAR
Roli and Siddhant settle down as the car glides along the crowded streets. Well, not Roli exactly. She feels restless. As if there was something she needed to know but... ah ha! She remembers! Siddhant was about to tell her something when Mr. Rajput interrupted them.
"Siddhantji..."
"Haan Roli"
"You were trying to tell me something before, what was it?"
"Ah that," he leans closer to her, "you know what, Mr. Rajput offered us a mind blowing gift!"
"What?" she's curious now.
"Hahaha! I won't tell you," he laughs.
"Siddhantji," she pulls his arm like a little kid, "tell me na, what is it?"
"Nope, I won't say!"
"Come on na! Tell meee!"
"Okay, watch," he points out of the window. Roli looks out.
The car takes a diversion through a lush green landscape that leads up to a grand five star hotel. Roli's eyes go wide with disbelief.
"A night at the Leela," grins Siddhant with a twinkle in his eyes.
