Chapter 16

February 6, 2014. 8:00 am. Rachna's Room.

Rachna is sitting in a chair by the window staring at the sky outside with tears in her eyes. Someone knocks on her door and Rachna quickly wipes away her tears and goes to open the door.

Gunjan cheerfully walks into Rachna's room and sits on Rachna's bed

"Good morning sis! Wow, you're already awake today?"

Gunjan stops smiling when she notices that Rachna's eyes are red and puffy.

"Rachna, what's wrong? Why are your eyes so red? Were you crying? And why do you look so tensed and worried?"

Rachna brushes her sister's concerns off. "No Gunjan! Of course I wasn't crying. I was just up late working on some designs so that's why I have a bit of a headache and I'm tired."

"Oh ok. Anything important that you have to finish?"

"Yeah, they're designs for next week's conference."

"Oh cool! Yeah, I remember you told me about it! So, show me the designs..."

Rachna becomes flustered because she actually doesn't have any designs to show Gunjan. "Uh, voh, uh...Gunjan they are confidential. I can't show you."

"Ok, fine...don't show me. But listen, I came to ask you about something. You know how Mayank got that promotion? Well, he told me that his company has booked our tickets already and we have to move to NY in one month! Can you believe it?!"

"Hmmm, that's great Gunjan."

Rachna looks a bit lost, like she's in her own little world. But Gunjan doesn't notice and continues talking.

"I know Rachna. I'm excited but...I just feel weird leaving everyone else here. And the rec center that I wanted to open up? What about that? If I move to NY with Mayank then I'll just be stuck at home there all day. You know what I mean..."

Gunjan notices Rachna is not really paying attention to her.

"Rachna...Rachna...Earth to Miss. Rachna Garg!! Come back to us Miss Garg!"

Rachna snaps out of her thoughts and looks at Gunjan. "Yeah Gunjan, what happened? I'm listening."

"Were you really listening Rachna? You seemed to be in your own world...what are you thinking about? Everything ok?"

Rachna looks away from Gunjan and quickly replies. "Yeah Gunjan, everything's fine. I just don't feel that well so I think I need to rest a bit."

"Ok, sure Rachna. You worked all night so you must be really tired. If you need anything, just let me know. Bye." Gunjan goes out from the room leaving Rachna alone.

Rachna sighs and goes to close the door of her room. She lies down on the bed and tries to fall asleep but old thoughts and memories keep flashing before her eyes.

Flashback:

"Hey babes! Just wait for me at the canteen, I'm coming in 2 minutes."

Rachna reads the message on her cell phone and smiles as she sits down at a free table in the college canteen. She keeps glancing at the door. Her face brightens up when she sees a guy walk in. He's dressed in dark-wash jeans and a plain white tee paired with a cool black leather jacket. He takes off his Rayband sunglasses and puts them away into his backpack as he walks into the building and looks around for Rachna. He smiles when he finally spots her at their favorite table in the back of the room and he begins walking towards her.

Rachna jumps up and gives the guy a big hug when he reaches the table.

"Happy birthday sweety!" Rachna hands the guy a neatly wrapped present.

"Aww thanks so much Rachna! But you know you didn't have to get me anything babe."

"I know you don't like getting gifts, but I wanted to get it for you. Hey listen though, don't open the gift until you get home later today ok?"

The guy nods and put the gift away in his backpack. He puts his arm around Rachna's waist and they walk to class together.

Flashback ends

Rachna snaps her eyes open. She sits up in bed and looks at the time in her phone. Realizing that she's already late for work, she decides to call the office. Nitya picks up the phone at reception.

"Hello. You've reached KT Creation's. This is Nitya speaking."

"Hi Nitya. It's Rachna."

"Rachna? What's up? You didn't come in today?"

"Yeah Nitya, I just called to let you know that I won't be coming in to the office today. I'm not feeling well. Can you please just inform Kabir?"

"Yeah, sure. I'll let KT know. Feel better."

"Thanks Nitya. Bye."

February 6, 2014. 10:30 am. KT Creation's Office.

"Rachna! Rachna!"

Kabir is looking for Rachna in the workshop when Nitya walks in.

"Nitya, where's Rachna? I need her to show me the designs she prepared for next week's fashion show."

"Oh KT, she just called in sick."

Kabir becomes worried at hearing this news. "What? What happened to Rachna? Is she ok?"

"I don't know much KT. She just said that she's sick and not coming into work today."

"Uhh ok. Ummm listen, take these designs and dress up the mannequins. I'll just come in a bit."

Kabir hands some papers to Nitya and leaves the workshop hurriedly.

Kabir walks into his office and quickly calls Rachna.

Rachna's phone rings and she sees that Kabir is calling her.

"Hello. Hi Kabir."

"Rachna! Are you ok? What's wrong?"

"It's nothing Kabir. I'm just not feeling too well so I thought it would be best if I took the day off today to rest. Is that ok? I can come in if you need me to..."

"No no, it's fine for you to take the day off. Don't worry, I'll manage. But you sure you're ok?"

Rachna's voice begins to quiver as she listens to how concerned Kabir is for her.

"Hmmm. Kabir, I'll talk to you later. Bye."

Rachna hangs up the phone quickly and bursts out crying.

Kabir is surprised at Rachna's behavior and how she hung up on him.

[Kabir's thoughts]

What happened to her? I should go visit her. But wait, what if she takes it in the wrong way? She sounded really upset when I was talking to her. Maybe it's a family problem...then it won't be right for me to interfere. But I want to make sure she's ok.

Kabir decides to go visit Rachna on the pretext of getting her opinion on some designs he drew up last night.
