Chapter 4

After Randhir had spoken, Arjun asked," Does anyone present here want to say something on this?"

I raise my hand not because I wanted seriously say something but I wanted to reply to Randhir's fear.

"Hazel, unexpected," said Arjun.

"I just want to say that you know there's gonna come a time when all of us are dead. There was a time before humans, and there's gonna be a time after. It could be tomorrow, could be a million years from now, and when it does there will be no one left to remember Cleopatra, or Muhammad Ali, or Mozart, let alone any of us." Then I looked at Randhir.

"Oblivion's inevitable. And if that scared you, then I suggest you ignore it. God knows, it's what everyone else does." I sit down after saying this.

"Well, that's some good advice." Sighed Arjun.

And he kept looking at me and smiled.

After the meeting, I was standing outside waiting for maa to pick me up and watching Parth and his girlfriend just opposite me.

Parth," Always."

Vidushi ," Always."

Parth ," Always."

Vidushi ," Always."

Randhir comes and stands besides me," What is your name?"

" Sanyukta."

"Your full name?"

" Sanyukta Agarwal."

He looks at me and smile.

" What?" I said.

" I did not say anything," he said.

"Why are you staring at me like that?" I questioned.

" Because you are beautiful," he exclaimed.

" Oh my God," I just replied.

"I enjoy looking at beautiful people. See I decided a while back not to deny myself the simpler pleasures of existence. Particularly as you so astutely pointed out, we're all gonna die pretty soon." He quipped in a normal tone.

" Okay that is great but I am not beautiful." I replied.

And then I hear Parth and Vidushi again.

"Always."

"Always."

" What is with this always'?" I asked Randhir.

"'Always' is like their thing, like they'll "always" love each other and what not. They've probably texted "always" to each other like fourteen million times this year." He was a bit annoyed.

And then Parth and Vidushi kissed.

"Let us watch a movie?" he said

" Um..mm I am free this week."

"No I mean now." He said.

"You can be a murderer."

" Come on Sanyukta Agarwal, take the risk."

" O my God, Randhir."

He takes out a pack of cigarette and puts one in his mouth, I watch in disbelief.

" It is disgusting, how could you?"

"What?" he says astonished.

"What, do you think that that's cool or something? You just ruined this whole thing. " I said disgusted.

" The whole thing?" he said amused.

"Yes, the whole thing."

"oh man." He smiled.

"You were doing really well too. God! There's always a Hamartia, isn't there? And yours is, even though you had freaking cancer, you're willing to give money to a corporation for the chance to acquire even more cancer? Let me just tell you that not being able to breathe sucks! It totally sucks!" I retorted.

" Hamartia?"

" It is a fatal flaw." I replied.

"A fatal..." he takes out the unlit cigarette and keeps it between his fingers.

"They don't actually hurt you unless you light 'em." He said

"Umm?"

"I never lit one. It's a metaphor, see? You put the thing that does the killing right between your teeth.
He puts the cigarette in his mouth.
" But you never give it the power to kill you. A metaphor." He explained.

I smiled. I was impressed and then maa shows up.

" Maa I have made friends with Randhir Singh Shekhawat and we are going to watch a movie at his place." I tell her.

Randhir waved to my mother and they both passed a smile.

" All the best." She said and drove away.
