When I Was Your Man

The sound of her footsteps approaching the empty classroom was all that was needed to send shivers down his spine, the sound of her faint breathing was enough for her presence to be made. The footsteps got louder and louder until she entered the classroom.

He closed his eyes and told her what he should have told her a long time ago, he told her what she should have known before Parth Kashyap came into the picture - now, despite knowing it was too late, Randhir told her.

His pride, his ego had been above everything else earlier, but now that he wanted to clean up the mess he made, he knew that he could never do it. Yet he still told her.

"Sanyukta," he whispered hoarsely into the dark classroom, knowing she would be able to hear him, "I love you."

His words echoed in the classroom that contained nobody but two lonely souls - the classroom that existed only for Randhir to confess his love to the woman who meant more to him than his own existence meant for himself. His eyes sprung open when he saw Sanyukta with tears in her eyes in front of him.

He knew she was with Parth, he knew that his heart had already been trampled on, and he would happily let it be trampled on again, but love for him meant more than that. Love for him meant expressing his feelings.

And express his feelings for Sanyukta he did.

"I love Parth," was all she said in a monotone voice, before she turned around and walked out of the room, leaving Randhir in the darkness, all alone.

Who knew that a heart that was already broken, could break again?

Through the tears that prickled the corners of his eyes, he smiled, knowing that people never fell in love, they rose in it, because love made you stronger. He remembered the time him and Sanyukta fought, competed, kissed, felt attraction towards each other, and knew that keeping those moments in his memory would heal his broken heart.

"And I love you Sanyukta," he whispered through the darkness.

Dancing On My Own

Their laughter loudly echoed in his ears, as he saw them holding hands in the hallway. His face held nothing but love towards the woman who found love in someone else.

He wasn't bitter. He would never be bitter. Sanyukta gave him enough to hold on to for the rest of his life. Sanyukta was the reason he learned to appreciate the feeling that had been contained in his heart.

He had thrown away all of his ego the day he confessed to Sanyukta that he loved her - but she loved Parth by then.

Randhir was happy for her because the feeling of love was the most liberating feeling in the world.

It didn't matter to him that she loved Parth and not him. All that mattered to him was that the girl he cared so much for, the girl he loved with all his heart, found love in someone who would take care of her.

She found love in Parth, just like he found love in her.

He could see them feeding each other with love in the cafeteria, gossiping on the stairway after class, he even caught them kissing behind the college building once. That was how the next two years flew by.

Randhir smiled on the final day of FITE.

He smiled because he loved her, he smiled because she was happy, and he also smiled because she finally got first rank that year.

I'll Turn My World Right Around For You

Randhir didn't expect to see Sanyukta again. He expected her to be happy in life, perhaps even married to Parth - but she found him. She found him at his house two years after they graduated.

It was midnight when he heard the knock on his door. Upon opening it and noticing Sanyukta there in tears, he took her in his arms right away.

"Randhir I'm sorry, I'm such a bad person because I'm coming to you in my time of need. But you're the only one who understands me," she whispered, breaking down in his arms.

Randhir only felt love towards the girl in front of him, and he didn't want anything else. He remained quiet, stroking her hair as she broke down in his arms, her fingers clutching his shirt tightly.

"Parth broke up with me," she finally let out.

Randhir felt like he had been hit in the chest with a bullet. He trusted Parth to keep Sanyukta happy for the rest of his life, but Parth hadn't only let her down, he let Randhir down too.

"Parth said that he confused friendship with love. It's been three years Randhir," she sobbed, "How could he say that?"

Randhir wanted to know the answer to that question too, but he just remained quiet and rubbed her back to soothe her, to comfort her, and to calm her down. He continued to hold her in his arms to let her know that she wasn't alone, that he would be with her every step of the way.

"He said I've only actually been a best friend to him and he... he might have found love in someone else," she whispered through her tears before breaking down once again.

He didn't enjoy seeing her in so much pain. It bothered him that Parth of all people would let her down, the one person who was probably the nicest anyone could get.

Randhir spent the whole night in silence as Sanyukta continued to sob in his arms. When she finally fell asleep, Randhir picked her up and put her in his bed, wiping away the fresh tears that were still on her face. He covered her with a blanket then proceeded to sleep on the couch that night.

Look After You

When he woke up, the first thought on his mind was Sanyukta. Upon reaching his bedroom, he noticed that she wasn't in bed. His blanket was folded neatly. Smiling to himself, he walked out of his room and found her in the kitchen, holding a cup of tea out for him to take.
This simple act triggered a memory where he accused Sanyukta back in their first year that she wouldn't make a good house wife.

She was in the same clothes she wore yesterday, her hair was tied, and she was looking down, a sad expression on her face. Randhir took the tea from her hands and sat down on the kitchen table. "Thank you," he finally said, after a long night of silence.

This made Sanyukta look up, as if she was stunned to hear his voice after so long.

"Randhir," she whispered, sitting across from him, her face paler than chalk, her eyes a bloodshot red. "I have to go."

"Sanyukta, promise me you'll be okay," he said firmly.

She looked down and he could tell that she was very hurt. Seeing her in pain felt like he had a thousand needles stabbing him at once.

He couldn't help but blame himself. If he hadn't been late in expressing his feelings for her, he would give her no reason to complain, he wouldn't even let her heart get a little scratch. He would keep her happy forever.

It was his fault.

It was only because of him that Parth got to her before he could.

She nodded slowly, but avoided his gaze.

"Sanyukta, will you stay here with me for a few days?" he asked her on impulse, knowing it was a long shot, but he didn't trust anyone else around Sanyukta now. Their jobs were in the same area and he could drive her to work too if she chose to go. If not, he would take a leave with her.

Randhir knew that he would need to bring her smile back to her face, even if it meant that he would bleed while picking up the broken pieces of her heart.

Sanyukta nodded slowly.

Broken Hearted Girl

He pulled over beside her office, her face still holding that sombre expression that he wanted to set her free from. The last two weeks had been routine, Randhir waking Sanyukta up in the morning then taking her to work, her not saying a word to him. They spent the morning in silence. The most they ever spoke to each other was when one of them would make tea and then a simple "Tea?" would be uttered.

Once Randhir pulled over beside her office, she would get out quickly and quietly, and walk inside without glancing back. She used to say "thanks" but now even that was too routine for them. Today, as she opened the door, she smiled at him - it was an improvement, albeit a forced one.

Randhir smiled warmly back at her, because he knew that he would always be there for her, whether she needed him or not. She closed the door behind her and Randhir drove to his own office. Once work was over, he would drive to her office and pick her up, and they would drive back to his house in silence.

At his house he would leave her alone, he would sometimes ask her to watch a movie with him and she would reluctantly agree. There would be a huge gap between them on the couch as the movie played. He would watch her as her eyes looked into the screen, seeing it, but not watching it. He put on a horror movie once and she didn't even flinch. He would usually order dinner from outside or he would make her something to eat, which she would eat silently and then go to sleep on his bed while he slept on the couch.

Today was a little bit different - today after work, when Randhir asked her if she wanted to watch a movie she said yes with a smile. Randhir could see through the smile, but he was glad that she was trying.

"What do you want to watch?" he asked.

"Anything."

That was her usual response.

"How about this?" she asked, picking up Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam from the pile.

Randhir raised an eyebrow, glad that she was starting to make suggestions. He nodded and put the movie in. This time she sat right beside him. As Salman Khan came on screen, he noticed Sanyukta's eyes fill up with tears. Randhir put the movie on pause.

"We don't have to watch this Sanyukta," he said.

She wiped her tears from her eyes and smiled at him. "I - I'm not crying because of the movie Randhir. I'm crying because I'm touched. You don't know how much you've done for me."

She placed her head on his shoulder. Randhir wrapped his arm around her shoulder and stroked her hair comfortingly.

"Randhir," she whispered. "Can you kiss me?"

The Rebound

"Randhir," she whispered. "Can you kiss me?"

"You will regret it," Randhir told her, removing his arm from around her and looking directly in her eyes.

"I won't."

"You will."

This had to be the rebound phase. If it made Sanyukta happy, Randhir would willingly be her rebound, the person she used to get over Parth, but he knew that in the end, she would only hate herself for it. And he couldn't bear to see her hate herself.

"Randhir, I was thinking about it for a while. I want to move on."

Exactly. This was the rebound phase.

"Listen Sanyukta, I'm not going to be your rebound," he told her, forcing himself to raise his voice at her.

He wanted to be nice to her, he wanted to explain to her patiently why it wouldn't work, but Randhir knew that she would only attach herself with him more. So he made a split second decision to go back to being the old Randhir - the Randhir who she would fight with, the one who she would react to, the one who would cause her to feel again, even if what she felt was hatred, and maybe... just maybe the same Randhir she wanted once too before Parth came into their lives, the same Randhir who had once been too late.

Sanyukta lowered her gaze as tears fell from her eyes. "I'm sorry."

"You know what Sanyukta," he said coldly, feeling his own heart hurt with the pain he could see this was causing her. "I've been nice to you for too long. If you're so stupid that you can't even move on from someone who clearly used you until he didn't need you anymore, then I have nothing to say to you either."

He stopped the movie, feeling terrible as more tears fell from her eyes.

After a few moments of silence, she spoke up, "Randhir... did you... did you move on from me?" she asked hoarsely.

"Yes," he said simply, "But you're my responsibility now, so don't try and leave this place. From tomorrow, you're making us food and doing the laundry."

He just wanted her to fight back, but she was crying instead. Parth changed her for the worse. He took away the fighter from within Sanyukta, he took away her strongest quality. Randhir could feel himself detesting Parth for this very reason. He could feel himself detesting himself. He had been too late. Randhir knew that he would never have let the fighter in Sanyukta die.

"The couch is all yours, or you could share the bed with me. It's up to you," he told her, trying to sound smug, before he walked towards his room. "Oh," he said, turning back for a moment. "Just wanted to say once again, you owe me, so you can't leave. If you do, I will call your brother."

He saw her eyes widen with fear before he turned back around and made his way to his room, lying down on the bed, feeling extremely guilty for what he just did, but he knew that he didn't have bad intentions at all, and that made all of this tolerable.

I'm going to bring the fighter back, he thought to himself as he lay awake in bed. I will bring back the strong Sanyukta.

It's Not Right, But It's Okay

When he was sure that Sanyukta was sleeping, he entered the living room quietly, bringing a blanket along with him. Seeing her tear stained face made him want to kiss her pain away. He wanted to tell her how much she meant to him and how much he loved her, but he couldn't because that wouldn't bring back the old Sanyukta.

He covered her in the blanket and gently pulled back hair that was lying on top of her eyes. She looked so angelic when she slept. Randhir fell to his knees and placed his head on the armrest, stroking her hair to comfort her. He had no idea when he fell asleep, but as soon as he heard her stir, his head shot up and he left the room. He closed the door behind him and stayed awake for the rest of the night.
The next few days passed by in a painful blur. She would make breakfast, lunch, dinner, clean the house, and do any other pending chores. She didn't argue. She didn't retaliate. She didn't even hesitate.
Randhir didn't know how to bring back the old Sanyukta. Treating her like the old Randhir did was not working. It seemed to him like she was falling deeper into her depression. It was only one day, when he received a letter in the mail that he knew what he would do. The letter was a formal invitation to an FITE reunion party for the year.

Randhir decided that he would take Sanyukta with him and make her face Parth if he was there. She wouldn't be able to run away from him forever. Sanyukta needed to move on, she needed to give her relationship a closure, and this reunion would be the perfect time to do it.
"We're going to this," he told her that night before bed.
Her mouth opened in shock. "No."
Randhir felt himself start to smile because she finally said something against him, but he covered it up with a smirk.
"What do you mean no? We're going means we're going."
"But... I can't."
"You are. End of discussion."
Then he left the room. The party was that weekend. The next day, Randhir bought her an elegant red gown for the party. He wanted all eyes to be on Sanyukta. He wanted Parth to notice who he left. And above all, he wanted her to feel beautiful.
When he gave the dress to Sanyukta, she looked at him with dead eyes. "What's this?"
"Can't you see? A dress. You're wearing it on Saturday."
"I... I can't go."
"We've already finished discussing this."
He then walked off feeling her sullen eyes on his back. He desperately wanted to tell her that he would be there for her and she didn't need to be scared, but he couldn't. She had to be independent again, not dependent on him, on Parth, or on anyone else.

Somebody That I Used To Know

As soon as he pulled up into a parking space at the hall where the reunion party was being held, he glanced at Sanyukta from the corner of his eyes.

She looked beautiful - the red dress fit perfectly on her body and brightened her face. Her makeup was simple and she had covered her dark circles quite well. She had a smokey eye look and was wearing a flattering neutral lip color. Randhir had a hard time taking his eyes off her.

Sanyukta was fidgeting, her hands shaking nervously. Randhir turned off the engine and held her hand comfortingly. She looked at him with surprise. He let go of her hand immediately. "Uh, stay here."

He got out of the car and walked over to the passenger side, holding the door open for her. He held his hand out for her to take. She looked down at his hand, back up at him, and then back down at his hand. Finally giving in, she held his hand to catch her balance as she exited the car.

He closed the door behind her and they both walked inside, Randhir still holding her hand. He didn't want her to have an emotional breakdown right outside the reunion party.

Once inside, his eyes searched for Sanyukta's ex-boyfriend Parth Kashyap. But he was nowhere to be seen. He could feel Sanyukta tense up beside him. Still holding her hand, he lead her inside. Spotting Jiggy, Kaustuki and Yoyo together, Randhir lead her to the trio before letting go of her hand.

He wanted her to open up and socialize again. As the trio greeted them, Sanyukta smiled formally - a forced smile that didn't quite reach her eyes.

Music was blaring in the background and Jiggy took Kaustuki to the dance floor. Randhir turned to Sanyukta, but her dead eyes were set on the door. Randhir followed her gaze and saw Parth. Parth Kashyap's hand was entwined in Vidhushi's.

Vidhushi? Randhir wondered in amazement. Parth, you fool. You left Sanyukta for Vidhushi?

Glancing at Parth with one eye, Randhir turned back to Sanyukta and grabbed her hand. "Come on, let's dance."

She didn't budge, but Randhir pulled her on to the dance floor. Today he was going to make Sanyukta react.

Here's to the Heartbreakers

He pulled her onto the dance floor, her body as rigid as stone. He held her waist with one of his hands, her hand in another before pulling her close. She turned around to look at Parth, but Randhir pulled her towards him, her body hitting his.

She looked into his eyes with her own pained ones and he immediately felt bad for what he was doing, but this was the only way he would get a strong reaction from her.

He leaned in close to her ear. "Let's kiss Sanyukta," he whispered in a flirty tone. "You wanted to kiss me the other day right. I'm feeling up to it, let's do it."

He felt Sanyukta give him a hard push backwards as tears fell from her eyes. All eyes were on them. Randhir knew that he was going to be publicly humiliated, but he welcomed that with open arms. If it would improve Sanyukta's condition, he would welcome anything and everything. His mind drifted to the times she would humiliate him in FITE. On his birthday, she threw a "pink" birthday party. She tripped him in front of the whole school too once. Randhir nearly chuckled at the memories, but he kept an offended mask for the sake of bringing her back.

"How dare you?" she yelled through tears. "Just because I haven't said anything doesn't mean you can do anything Randhir. I hate you!"

Parth let go of Vidhushi's hand and bolted towards them.

"What did you do to her?" he yelled at Randhir.

Randhir glared at Parth, feeling deeply irritated by his concern. "Why do you care? You left her. Mind your own business."

"I left her because I realized what was between us was not love, there was no spark, no chemistry! We were best friends though Randhir, we still cared about each other a lot and I still care about her now too!"

"Please, care?" Randhir yelled angrily. "Do you see her condition? This is care? You snatched everything from her Parth, you snatched her independence. Just stay away from her."

When Randhir turned around next, Sanyukta was nowhere to be seen.

"Sanyukta?" he called out, his heart beating erratically with fear. "Where is she?"

He spotted her by the bar, downing a shot of vodka.

Sprinting towards her, he grabbed her arm. "You silly girl, drinking won't solve your problems," he yelled. "Get up!"

She stumbled as she stood up.

"How much did she drink?" he asked the bartender.

"Not much sir, just three shots."

"That's too much for her."

"Randhiiir," she said, her speech slurring. "You control freak, you MCP! I hate youuu!"

Randhir nearly smiled. At least her feelings were developing in her subconscious mind and came out through her inebriated state. It was better than nothing.

Placing money on the counter for the bartender, Randhir grabbed her hand and started to take her outside, but she stopped him.

"No, no, no, no!" she pulled her hand off his and stumbled towards Parth. She nearly fell on the way there, but Randhir grabbed her arm to hold her upright.

"Parth," she said, once she reached him, grabbing his collar. "I love you Parth, I love youuu! Please come back to mee."

"Sanyukta, you don't know what you're saying, you're drunk!" Parth said, grabbing her hands and pushing them off him.

"You promised we'd be together forever Parth, how can you break that promise?" she cried.

Randhir held on to her shoulders from behind her, not intervening. She needed to get this out. He wouldn't stop her today.

"I need you Parth."

"Sanyukta, I promised I'd be with you forever, and I am with you forever, as your friend. Anytime you need me, I will be here. But Sanyukta you can't stay with me. Look at what being with me has done to you. I'm not right for you," he told her softly. "Look at what I turned you into."

One thing - probably the first and last thing - that came out of Parth's mouth that Randhir felt himself agreeing with.

"Fine Parth," she said through frustrated tears. "You don't deserve me either. I wasted time on you. You moved on easily, but I couldn't. I'm not wasting anymore time now, I'm moving on too. I don't need you to smile."

Sanyukta turned around and pressed her face into Randhir's chest and cried. He wrapped his arms around Sanyukta, shot Parth one last look of disdain, and took her home.
