Chapter 9

"no way".. Randhir and Sanyukta both protested at the same time ...they stopped in their tracks realising it...everyone looked at them surprised..

Kaustuki smiled a bit and said softly " well, at least you two agree on one thing.."

Jiggy who was sitting beside her, nudged her elbow, gesturing her to stop saying anything...for he saw both Randhir and Sanyukta flinching as Kaustuki said it...

Kaustuki was not much fond of this game "truth and dare" for she remembered the last time they played it ...it had not only almost ruined Sanyukta and hers friendship but also almost ended Randhir and Sanyukta's relationship...

It was just the same like it was tonight, to Kaustuki, it felt as if she is reliving that day which happened so long ago...Their group had gathered at Parth's place, and they were celebrating their last day of the exam. It was then Jiggy had suggested the game. It was Sanyukta's turn and Vidushi had decided to question her. She looked at Sanyukta and asked her, if she has a crush on anyone from their batch. Kaustuki noticed that Sanyukta hesitated a bit before saying a "no". Vidushi smirked at her and trailed her eyes on Randhir and then back at Sanyukta. It did not go unnoticed by Kaustuki, that Sanyukta was quietly hinting Vidushi , forbidding her to divulge something. Kaustuki had felt hurt, she had understood that Sanyukta was hiding something from her, what hurt her most was that, Vidushi , whom Sanyukta did not like much seemed to know about it but Kaustuki being her best friend had no clue about it. Kaustuki confronted Sanyukta once their party was over, and they were back to their hostel room. Seeing Kaustuki upset , Sanyukta had blurted out the truth that Randhir and she were dating and Vidushi knew it. Kaustuki feeling hurt had asked her how come she trusted Vidushi with such a big secret and yet did not even care to share with her.

Kaustuki still remembered the conversation they had so many years back.

"Kaustu, I seriously did not want to keep you in dark, but Randhir made me promise not to tell it to anyone.." Sanyukta said sadly..

"Yet, you went and told Vidushi..." Kaustuki said bitterly.

"There is a reason why Vidushi knows..."

"Oh really?...and what might that be.." Kaustuki said sarcastically

"You remember my parents had fixed my marriage with Sameer? .." Sanyukta started saying

"Yeah, I remember, and I remember how Randhir forced that information out of me..."Kaustuki frowned..

" So the thing is... I needed to convince my parents that Sameer was not a nice person, to break the marriage...but my parents trusted Sameer more than me, so whatever I would say against him meant nothing..Randhir and I , made a plan to expose Sameer, but we needed a girl who could trap Sameer...and Vidushi was the best bet...it was then Vidushi got to know..that Randhir and me...were kind of ...dating..." Sanyukta ended looking a Kaustuki guiltily...

"So did your plan work?" Kaustuki asked, a bit curtly

"Actually, yes it did...Vidushi flirted with Sameer, and like the jerk Sameer always had been, he was all over her. As planned, Vidushi and Sameer went out on a date at a restaurant and I convinced my parents to go there too, as an excuse for a family outing. My parents saw Sameer flirting and getting close with Vidushi and all hell broke loose. My father broke my engagement with Sameer the next day." Sanyukta said smiling at her...

"But how come did you two convince Vidushi to help you?" Kaustuki asked her feeling curious...

" Well, you see...apparently , Vidushi has a big crush on Parth...and I promised her that I would set up a date with him...and she agreed..." Sanyukta said

"Is there anymore shocks left for me to get? Parth and Vidushi...You and Randhir.." Kaustuki exclaimed...

"Calm down, Kaustu...I am really sorry, to keep you out of this...believe me I wanted to tell you the on the very day Randhir proposed to me...even though I had promised Randhir we will keep it a secret..." Sanyukta said...

"But then why did you not?" Kaustuki said

"Because...because...I was afraid.." Sanyukta replied hesitating...

"Afraid...of what?" Kaustuki said feeling surprised..

"Well, you never liked Randhir much...and I was afraid of how you would react.." Sanyukta said looking away from her..

"Sanyu...before anything else, you are my best friend...its true I am not much fond of Randhir...but that was only because the way he used to behave with you and his attitude...but I know he has changed after he became friends with you..for a long time now I have known that he cares for you a lot...and anyone who cares for my friend , I cannot possibly hate that person...so I absolutely have no problem with you going out with him..." Kaustuki sighed ...

" I am sorry, Kaustu...I hurt you..." Sanyukta said hugging her...

"Its alright Sanyu...just next time...don't hide such things for me...it does come as a huge shock when ultimately you get to know it...my poor heart might not survive.." Kaustuki laughed...

A call on Sanyukta's mobile, interrupted their conversation. It was Randhir who had called her. She had left immediately to meet him. But after an hour a tearful Sanyukta returned to their room.

"What happened Sanyu?.." Kaustuki asked her feeling horrified to see a crying Sanyukta..

"Kaustu...Randhir and I had a terrible fight..." sniffed Sanyukta..

"Fight?... but why?" Kaustuki asked looking surprised...

"Well you know what happened during the game right?" Sanyukta said

"Yes...and..." Kaustuki said...

"Randhir, got angry for what Vidushi did...that almost our secret was out...I tried to calm him down, and in all these, I told him that I had to tell you our secret and that upset him even more..and he went away angrily" Sanyukta said...

"He is mad...well such a stupid reason to get upset about...everyone knows Vidushi cant keep a secret...how in the world were you supposed to keep her mouth shut? And why could not Randhir do it?...leave it Sanyu...he is not worth crying over.." Kausuki fumed..

" No, Kaustu...he is just upset...nothing else.." Sanyukta said looking upset..

"Alright...now don't you become sad..this mess got created because I got to know your secret right?...so now I am going to put it right..." Kaustuki said...

"But how?" Sanyukta replied..

"By, putting some sense into the head of your dumb boyfriend..." Kaustuki said, and before Sanyukta could say something , she had left the room..

Kaustuki marched briskly to the boys hostel and knocked sharply on the door of Randhir's room, a very surprised Jiggy opened the door and asked " You, here? ...err...its boys hostel remember? Warden will get us rusticated if caught..."

"Well, I wont be caught, if you will let me in...now..move.."Kaustuki, pushed Jiggy and barged into the room...

"Jiggy, wake up your friend Randhir...I need to talk to him.." Kaustuki ordered in a bossy tone..

"Why?..." Jiggy asked looking confused..

"Do as I am telling you..." Kaustuki said..

Jiggy woke up Randhir...and Randhir stared at Kaustuki feeling shocked..

"You...here...at this time...what happened?" Randhir asked confused...

"I need to talk to you...in private..." said Kaustuki

Randhir asked Jiggy to leave for sometime...Jiggy bewildered left the place, wondering what in world Kaustuki , who never spoke to Randhir before, wants to talk to him now..

"What is it Kaustuki?" Randhir asked her calmly

"Randhir...its about Sanyukta..." Kaustuki said

"What?...is she alright?" asked Randhir looking concerned..

"Oh yeah...she is fine...except her boyfriend is a jerk and likes to make her miserable.." Kaustuki said sarcastically

"What do you mean?" Randhir said frowning...

"Ah, don't pretend Mr. Randhir Singh Shekhawat...just because of your some weird notion, you yelled at Sanyukta...what was her fault? That she spilled the secret of your relationship with her to me?" Kaustuki spat out...

"Kaustuki you have no idea why I did that..." Randhir said equally angry...

"Oh yeah?...then please explain.." she replied back

"Kaustuki, have you any idea if everyone gets to know about Sanyukta and mine's relationship , what will happen?...eventually Sanyukta's parents will get to know about it...and you know what they are like...they will never accept it...I will lose Sanyukta...and I cannot live with that..." Randhir said bitterly

"Randhir...I can understand you are insecure, you fear of losing Sanyukta...but just think , you cannot run away from these problems forever right? ...college will end soon, and then I hope you two are planning a future for yourself...and then you will have to confront Sanyukta's parents eventually..." Kaustuki said calming herself down, as she began to understand Randhir's fears...

"If you keep fearing about such things, then how can your relationship work out with Sanyukta?...trust your love, have faith in it...and I am sure everything will be fine eventually..." she continued to say...

"I know Kaustuki, I should not have yelled at Sanyukta...but I could not help it..." Randhir sighed...

"Randhir, Sanyukta loves you so much that she did not even think once before keeping your relationship with her a secret from me, her best friend...and she has never done that before...she shares everything with me...but you are important to her...so important that she even put you above her best friend...so have faith in the love she has for you..." Kaustuki said softly...

"Shit!...i was so stupid...I let my insecurities control me..." sighed Randhir sadly..

"Now...go and make up with her...such stupid matter should not create problems in a relationship so beautiful..." Kaustuki smiled..

That evening Kaustuki had managed to make Randhir and Sanyukta patch up. But now it was different, they are all older now, matured and the gravity of the problems is much more serious. Yet, she somehow knew that under all these the root cause is same, Randhir's insecurities, and may be this time Sanyukta's inability to understand him as well..

"Kaustuki...your turn.." yelled someone, and that brought back Kaustuki from her reminiscence ...

She saw Sahil, vigorously nodding his head towards her...Kaustuki cleared her throat and said " yep, say.."

"Ok, truth or dare.."

"umm..truth.." replied Kaustuki

"Fine...tell us one thing about Jiggy that irritates you the most..." laughed Sahil..

"that's easy...sometimes I feel he loves Randhir more than me...if he had the chance he might have married Randhir...I guess I came in between them..." Kaustuki sighed

Jiggy looked at her in horror hearing all these and Randhir gave a small smile listening to all that..

"Hey...that's not true...I love you a lot Kaustu... yes, Randhir is very special to me...but you are the one with whom I want to spend my entire life with..and I promise next time you make a plan to spend time with me I will cancel all plans with Randhir..." said Jiggy and came up to Kaustuki to hug her...

"Thanks Jiggy for saying this...and don't worry I wont stop you from meeting Randhir.." Kaustuki smiled and hugged back Jiggy..

"I am so hurt Jiggy...you ditched me..." Randhir said and pretended to look hurt, while everyone laughed..

For a moment it seemed that all the tension that was in the air since the start of the evening vanished...Sanyukta looked at Randhir smiling, somehow she felt nice watching him laugh and joke...she knew whatever had happened between them and that is happening, has taken a toll on him...she knew the divorce has affected him in the same way it has affected her..its only like always, he keeps blaming others for his own misery...and by others, she meant herself...so yes, he is sad, he is depressed and miserable ,and all because of her...may be she was at fault too...she blamed him for all that happened , because she was so angry with him, she was tired of him blaming her for everything, she was tired of his insecurities and then whatever happened, had happened only because of him...yes it shattered him, but it affected her more...but the only hurt that Randhir saw was his own bruised soul, but not hers...even after all these, she could not help but wish happiness for him, for however hard she might try, she could never hate him...

"Hey Sanyukta...now its your turn..." said Jiggy... "Vidushi ask her.."

"So Sanyukta...are you ready?" Vidushi smirked..

"Yeah Vidushi..." Sanyukta said looking at her..

"So..truth or dare..."

"Dare...?" Sanyukta said hesitating a bit..

"Awesome...that's what I expected from you..." vidushi exclaimed..

"Ok...so whats the dare..."

"Hmm...so Sanyukta...your dare is...you have to go on a date with Randhir tomorrow..." Vidushi said smiling wickedly..

"That's not fair Vidushi...the dare is supposed to happen now...and this is a ridiculous dare..change it..." protested Sanyukta..

"Hello...if you have not seen the time...Randhir cant take you on a date at this time of night...and I am no way going to change the dare...and its upto me what dare I want to give...well just admit you are scared and chickening out..." said Vidushi..

"Well...I do not chicken out from anything...fine..i will do as you say.." Sanyukta said in a determined voice..

She looked at Randhir and said firmly... " We are going on a date tomorrow..time , place, your choice.."

"I am no way going on a date with you...its your dare, and I am not bothered how you will manage ...but don't involve me..." Randhir said grumpily...

"In case you have not noticed you are a part of this dare and so you are already involved.." Sanyukta said icily

"Vidushi...Randhir is scared to go out with me, so I guess the date has to be cancelled , but I win...it was not I who backed out.." continued Sanyukta..

"Excuse me...I am not scared of silly things like going out on dates...fine we will go out tomorrow...be ready at 7:00 pm, I will pick you up..." Randhir replied back curtly..

Sanyukta gave a jubilant smile looking at Vidushi...like always she knew exactly how to make Randhir give in to her demands...Vidushi nodded back at her suppressing a smile understanding exactly what happened..

The game continued for some time, when Parth said, that they should wrap up now and go home, as it was almost 3:00 pm and everyone agreed to him..

"Sanyukta, come with me I will drop you..." Randhir heard Parth saying to Sanyukta.

From the corner of his eyes he saw Sanyukta nodding in agreement..Randhir walked up to Vidushi and said " Hey, I will drop you , if you have no problem..."

Vidushi looked at him in surprise and then said ... "Uh, sure.. I have no problem...thanks"

Jiggy decided to stay back at Kaustuki's place, while Sahil and Yoyo went together...

As Vidushi sat in Randhir's car she saw Randhir sneaking glances towards Parth and Sanyukta who were getting into Parth's car..

Vidushi pursed her lips, trying to stop a smile...

"Hey , why are you smiling?" Randhir asked her..

"Why? You have any problem with my smiling?" Vidushi inquired

"Absolutely not...only if the joke is not on me..." Randhir grunted..

" Stings you.. does it not?" Vidushi asked..

"uhh what?"

"Umm..watching Sanyukta go off with Parth...hurt you.. did it not?

"Absolutely not..i am so over her.." Randhir replied gritting his teeth...

"Yep..i can see that...the way you are gripping the steering wheel now...is self-explanatory you know.." Vidushi taunted him...

"You still love her..." Vidushi declared..

"Nope I don't.." Randhir said firmly.."But you still love him...Parth ...I mean"

Vidushi was caught off guard...she looked at Randhir and said "no I don't"

"come on...don't lie...its clear from the way you kept stealing glances at him all evening.."

"wow...someone was very observant...why don't you put your mind in some other fruitful things...like deciding where to take Sanyukta for a date tomorrow.." mocked vidushi

"Ah..i will never forgive you for trapping me into the date.." snarled Randhir..

"well you have got a smart wife..she knows how to make you say yes.." smirked Vidushi...

"That's because I can never say no to her..."

"so finally you admit..you do care for her.." vidushi said

"Yeah...fine..i do...there can never be any other woman in my life other than Sanyukta...I try to hate her so much ...but I fail every time...each time I just end up falling in love with her even more.." Randhir confessed sadly...

"Anyway... Vidushi, I think you should try to work things out with Parth...I am pretty sure things will become all right...just try talking it out.."

"wow...and its coming out from your mouth..someone whose own marriage is on rocks..." snorted Vidushi.. "Why don't you try to salvage your marriage instead of being bothered about me.."

"I would have , if it was possible..but things are too complicated...and I don't think its possible anymore.." sighed Randhir

Vidushi thought for sometime and said...

"Fine..i will try to work my relationship out with Parth...but then you have to promise me that you will try to give your marriage with Sanyukta another chance..make your relationship work out as well..."

"well now..thats not fair..." Randhir exclaimed

"Nothing is fair in this world..." Vidushi smiled "come on...for Parth and mine's sake say yes...and I know somewhere you are afraid Parth will whisk away your darling Sanyukta...so if I can somehow save my relationship with Parth , may be he wont look at Sanyukta..." Vidushi winked at Randhir

Randhir looked at him exasperatedly and said ..." Ok, fine...I will give it a try...I will try to save our marriage.."

"Good...so it's a deal then...now go to the date tomorrow and try to be sincere in your efforts..." smiled Vidushi

"Yep...I will and you too..." Randhir said as he pulled his car into Vidushi's house's drive way ..

"Bye Randhir...and good luck" said Vidushi as she got down from the car and made way to the gate of her house...

Randhir sighed as he watched Vidushi go...he cursed himself for making such an idiotic deal with Vidushi, unfortunately it cannot be undone now and he will also not back out from it, for he can never let Vidushi laugh at his expense.
