Part-7
"Where there's Marriage without Love, there will be Love without Marriage."
A few weeks passed and Gopi hoped that things have cooled down sufficiently to talk to the Mehtas. Ahem wanted her to divorce Ajay and she had no particular desire to stay married to him. She was brought up in a family that was zealously vegetarian, even eggs were a big no-no. Ajay loved non-veg , since he didn't dare to bring meat into the house, he used to eat it in hotels…and that too in her presence. She found it revolting..she had no prejudice against non-vegetarians, she just didn't like vegetarians turning into non-vegetarians. She had tried persuading him but he was of the opinion that what he eats is solely his decision.
Sarala Mehta wanted grandkids and never missed an opportunity to remind her sons and daughters-in-law of her desire. Rashi wanted a kid but Gopi wasn't sure about her love for Ajay..having a child together makes strong relationships stronger and weak ones further shaky. She worried about how it would scar the child mentally.
He was gentle to her, he cared for her health……..but he could also be quite abrasive with words and unfeeling at times…The stench of cigarette smoke coming from him repelled her.. There was also another reason behind their failed relationship- he had a high sex drive whereas Gopi drew happiness from having loving conversations and being there for one another . Their whole attitude towards intimacy was different, Ajay would accuse her of being frigid and as a result she agreed to get intimate even when she was not in the mood..she hated the compromise and it built up some resentment in her. She kept the pretence of being happy and taught herself to think that she was happy,it was her guilt which made her like that …but not anymore. If relationship has turned stifling then hanging on to it is a crime towards both her spouse and herself.
Ajay was a good person to be friends with but not as a husband. Ahem's arrival merely precipitated the break-up, it wasn't the cause behind it. Morality and social values proved to be inadequate to stop her from choosing to be with Ahem…
"You cant just 'steal' anyone from anybody...They were probably already prepared to leave, you're just the excuse."
-Anon
Rashi's position had weakened considerably after Gopi's departure. Her in laws used to see Gopi's image in her …after all she and Gopi had the same blood running in their veins. Sarala heaped scorn on her and used to ask her why she hasn't been able to give her a grandchild, does she have plans similar to those of Gopi's?
Jigar wanted to be a Dad too, so he thought it would be better to visit an infertility specialists and get the tests done…his mom would keep quiet after that. The tests were done and Rashi was to collect the report the next day, the doctors informed her that Jigar suffers from testicular azoospermia and can't be treated. This shattered Rashi, she knew that her husband would be in tremendous pain if he hears that. The society would cast aspersions on his masculinity…what should she tell to Maaji?
In order to protect Jigar's sanity she decided to take the blame on herself. Jigar felt sad when his wife told him about her infertility, he hugged her and both of them cried. He told her that he would find a way out. Sarala heaped scorn on Rashi more frequently now but Rashi respected her and didn't answer back. Sarala was against adoption, she had her own prejudice against artificial insemination and surrogacy. In short she wanted Rashi out of her son's life and nothing could change her mind.
She hatched a plan to create mistrust in Rashi's mind and make her leave on her own as Jigar was hesitant. Sarala starts with alluding to how some of her acquaintances had got a grandchild after throwing out their barren DIL and getting their son remarried . Jigar's dad shared his wife's views. They were one of those people who hide their obscurantist thinking behind a faade of modernity.
Sarala started planting showing proofs of Jigar's infidelity to break Rashi's resolve…Rashi grinned and bared it for some time..but her heart broke with every proof of Jigar's womanizing nature.
He was the man whom she tried to insulate from pain by declaring herself as infertile. Oh Jigarji I trusted you so much and is this what I get in return? I had no plans of sleeping around to beget a child…and this is what you do to me when you think that things are the way round. Doesn't my love and fidelity count for anything?
Gopi called Rashi to apologise and to ask whether things are fine to initiate her divorce proceedings with Ajay? Rashi told "Yes Gopi, let us approach the same lawyer, it would be cheaper that way"
Gopi was aghast and believed that she had vitiated Rashi's relationship with her inlaws by her actions. Rashi told her the whole story and thanked her for speeding up the process of seeing the Mehta's true nature. She told her sis about her plans to reveal the truth to the Mehtas after the divorce…she will treat him in the way they treated her. She won't cling to the marriage now that she has seen the true face of it.
"If you left me without a reason don't come back with an excuse".
