More than a month passed by but Gopi was still traumatised. Ahem now hardly spoke to her and if he did he would talk curtly. She didn't find anyone to confide in and her marriage had taken a turn for worse but the real shocker was to come soon.
Gopi was pregnant. It evoked mixed feelings in her. She loved children and had always longed to become a mother...but now she was scared of bringing her kid into such a vitiated environment.
The baby was her flesh and blood, someone whom she could claim to be her very own. Gopi hoped to forge a relationship of love with her child. She prayed to Kanhaji to bless her child. Even though her marriage was on rocks, gopi thought that the kid's future is secure. Ahem might hate her but he can't ignore his child. The child would be his heir and bear his name.
...These feelings were not reciprocated by Ahem, he denied fathering the baby and claimed that it was the product of her illicit affair with a guy whom she met clandestinely. Modi family knew that they never had a normal married life and therefore they took Ahem's version as the truth...and after all why would the "upright" Ahem shy away from his responsibilities?...They disowned her, Jigar was the only one who had some compassion and suggested that she stay at MM till the paternity test could be conducted. Ahem shouted at him and all shifted the onus of proving innocence on Gopi.
What could Gopi do? She wished that she had confided about the physical abuse to Kokila...and now it is too late. No one could have anticipated such a situation, Gopi got all sorts of labels - Kulta, Charitraheen, unchaste..the list went on.
Gopi was forced to leave MM and seek shelter in an NGO, the Modi's broke off all communication with her. She was provided with some basic vocational training so that she could be gainfully employed after childbirth. Gopi showed great interest in learning for her child's sake, she wanted it to be well educated --and that requires money. She touched her swollen belly and promised her kid-her world that she will stop at nothing to ensure that it doesn't end up like her.
Gopi learnt tailoring and hoped to be independent, she didn't want her kid to become a destitute surviving on handouts...Gopi met other women victims, many were thrown out of their house because their husband fancied another woman, some ended up here after their lover, with whom they had eloped ditched them. Others were penniless widows. The plight of Lata, an acid attack victim melted her heart...a lot of ill deeds are perpetrated in the name of love.
