Nature..Nature is your genes. The physical and personality traits determined by your genes stay the same irrespective of where you were born and raised.

Nurture..Nurture refers to your childhood, or how you were brought up.

Going by the definition above I was wondering about the differences of Rashi and Gopi, two cousins raised in the same house.

Rashi:

Nature...She is obviously her mothers daughter. She only wants what she wants, forget what if good for the family as a whole. She has been brought up to believe in lying, cheating, and of course doing whatever it takes to get what you want. As long as you achieve your goal, all is fair.

Nurture...But on the other hand, Rashi has at times shown she is capable of compassion and love. So should we blame Urmi for the way she has turned out? Or should we blame her father for being more involved in her life? Or is it just that had Urmi been there or not this is who Rashi would have been. Is it possible if Rashi had a mother who was a better role model she would not have been the same?

Gopi:

Nature...So was she molded by trait? Had she been the same Gopi we know if her parents were alive? Was she born this way, or was it her upbringing that molded her this way?

Nurture...In her life she has had to be sidelined and that is the only way she knows how to live. So is it the upbringing that we blame? Was she moulded to be the doormat for all by her Aunt and Cousin? Can we really blame it on the nurturing she got (or lack there of). She has always been a second thought by everyone in her life. She has never been a priorority as far as feelings and needs. So was it not enough nurture that is to blame?

I am not even going to try and say I am intelligent, but, I have been thinking about what makes Rashi do what she does? And what makes Gopi do what she does? And so I thought we could have a discussion on who or what if anything/anyone is responsible for these two cousins raised in the same house to be polar opposites.
If Gopi grew up around seeing only the kalakaries of her Aunt and Cousin how did the atmosphere not effect her? And if Rashi saw her cousin being mistreated then why did she not try and stop it or why not speak up?

Good post Rupal. And a very good question.

In my opinion and from what I studied, we are combination of both nature and nurture.

Rashi is perfect example of this. 90% of her DNA is all Urmila, she only got 10% from her Dad. Her upbringing is 100% Urmila. Now the 10% she got from her Dad is influenced by the 90% Urmila and add the 100% of nurture and we got a product called Rashi. This will always be her personality, trait, character.

We don't know much about Gopi's parents, but I truly believe they must have been just like Gopi. She is biologically her parents child, and they must have been of pure heart to give birth a child like Gopi, with the same heart.

Yes she could have gone the other way after being brought up in the type of environment that she did, but in Gopi's case the pure heart she inherited from her parents did not allow her to be a kalkari queen like Rashi, and the part of it is also the emotional abuse.

Gopi learned what not to do, and all Rashi learned was do whatever you can to win.

What a thought provoking post Rupal.. and wonderfully questioned👏 Nature or Nurture

It is Gopi's nature to be kind and considerate. We can teach children not to throw a stone at the dog but to empathize with the dog's plight and realize that it is a life like ours and will face the same kind of pain that we feel if hit should come from within. Not all have have the nature to be sympathetic or considerate to fellow human beings.
But even if you cannot empathize, there is something called as education, and principles taught by our elders to us. We may not understand why it is wrong to tease a person with a stutter when we are very young, but we do not do it because we are taught it is wrong.
Rashi has a disadvantage in both. She has got her genes from her mother mostly that makes her neither naturally sympathetic or considerate and due to her mother's teachings she does not have a conscience because her mother taught her she does not need to have one as long as she gets what she wants..
a combination of these two along with being selfish and callous makes her the person she is today.

As for Gopi, it is her nature to be the person she is. You cannot teach someone to always look for the good in others. It comes from within. But you can teach them to be confident. Gopi being naturally calm, lost her confidence and self respect in her upbringing. But the inner core of hers remains true and she is slowly blooming under her husband's care.

😆😉 That is exactly what we need..
But I think if someone.. just someone made Gopi realize that she really is loved unconditionally then she will look at things differently. Her need to keep everyone happy will at least take a new course where she thinks as to whether the person really does deserve such happiness.

I blame Jithu the most. He is not blind and he chose to ignore what was happening. I am all for a good person but turning your face another way to avoid facing the reality that your niece is getting tortured is too much
In doing what he did, Jithu made sure that Gopi felt guitly everytime something good happens to her. I guess she was made to feel that way by her maami. But Gopi is still human with desires and wishes and I want those to come to the fore in Aham's nurturing😛

I agree. Jeetu bhai should have had enough 🤬 to speak up for a child who has lost both her parents and is living under the scrutiny of your useless wife. I am a Mami myself and I am very strict like Koki, I believe in respect, if the kids don't show it they get lectured. But later they get hugged and kissed by me till they end up giggling like crazy. Kids should never feel as they are a burden on anyone. What happens to them is out of their hands and in the hands of the adults that take care of them. I am called Hitler Mami...but then she also hugs me the most and says I love you to me the most😊

😃 Hitler Maami Ki Jai ho😉

But really. Kids do recognize that loving but strict nature quickly. I think that is why even though Gopi fears Koki, she still loves her and feels close to her. She goes and hugs her Maaji when she does something nice. But I have not seen her do that with her Maami even when she is at her gushing best. It has come on instinctively to her that her Maaji is good and wants the best for her.

Why do you think Rashi does not have this instinct? Maybe she was so much brainwashed that she does not know what good and bad is a all...😕

Sorry to digress from the main topic.. But @Bold I do not agree.. Maybe before marriage Gopi would have made the sacrifice. But after that, she would never do it. She will leave Aham if she thinks it would make him happy but she will not put anyone else in above him, even Koki..
