Part 3

Later that night...

Ahem loved the veiw of the city form the window of his suit and found himself standing their once again, remembering the events of the evening.

His mind was racing with thoughts of the conversation he heard between his mother and Gopi earlier that night.

Dinner had been disaster, with Rashi's endless coments and questions, while his mom had done nothing but glare at her the whole time, and Jigar, unsucessfully, trying to shut Rashi up. He didn't think he could handle one more day of Rashi's chattering, and they were supposed to go sight seeing the next day.

Gopi had been her usual quiet self, no not usual, but avoiding, that's the best way to describe her behavior. She avoided looking at him altogether, if she wanted to know something, she had glanced either at Jigar or his mom and took her ques from them, but never, not even, once glanced at him.

And now he knew why.

He had been delayed coming up to the suit, because he wanted to talk to someone about sight seeing the next day.

By the time he had come up, Gopi had changed and was sitting with his mom in the living area, talking.

He had immediately gone into the room to change himself and wait for Gopi to come into the room so he could talk to her.

He had waited for almost half an hour, but she never came, so he had decided to check on her, but the conversation he heard had stopped him in his track.

Gopi had been talking to his mom about leaving Modi Bhavan after they returned to India once again.

Gopi had been nervous the whole night, she didn't want to act stupid and make Ahemji more mad than he was, at one point he looked like he wanted to shout at Rashiben.

She had also been nervous about talking to Koki, she needed to tell Maji her decision before she tried to force Ahemji to be nice to her the next day.

She was relieved when dinner was over and he stayed back to talk to someone.

Once they were in the room, she had quickly changed into her simple sari, she then went to the closet to get the blanket and pillow out of the closet. She had seen the items earlier when she was putting her clothes away. She wanted to be out of the room before Ahemji returned and told her to get out.

Maji had come out the room for little while because she couldn't sleep, and they had just been conversing about nothing in particular.

After talking with her about all the things they done during the day, Gopi hesitantly brought up the subject of leaving Modi Bhavan.

Gopi nervously twisted pallu of her sari. "Woh, maji muje aap se kuch baat kehni thi."

Koki watched her Vahu, she had been acting strange and nervous the whole night, and she knew Gopi was avoiding going in the room with her dikra. She watched her sharply and said, "Bolo Gopi vahu, what do you want to tell me."

"Maji, I think I should leave Modi Bhavan, after we get back." Gopi waited for Koki's response.

Koki raised her head and looked at Gopi, "What is this Gopi vahu? What are you talking about? Of course you are not going to leave, we have already talked about this."

When Koki saw the tears in her vahu's eyes, her heart melted, "Gopi vahu, I know you don't think you are right for my dikra, but in my heart I know you are the only perfect one for him and no one else."

"Maji, I know you believe that, bun I know now that he could never be happy with me." Gopi looked at Koki with pleading eyes, "Please maji listen to me, he will never be happy with me, he loves you lot, and I know you would do anything for him, so please free him from this unwanted relationship, let him live his life the way he wants to."

"And what about you Gopi vahu? Didn't you tell me that if you had to leave again you would not survive? Koki knew her vahu had lost all hope when Ahem had refused to bring her to Switzerland, no matter how much she had smiled and tried to hide her pain from everyone.

"Maji, dying one time is whole lot better than dying small death everday, I don't think I can take Ahemji indifference anymore." Gopi buried her face in her hands and cried bitterly for all her lost dreams and hopes.

Koki took Gopi's hands in hers, "Gopi Vahu?"

"Please maji, free us both from this pain, I know it will be far more painful for you, but ask your heart, do you want to see your son compromise and then be miserable his whole life?" Gopi looked at Koki pleadingly.

Ahem reeled back as if he had been punched in the stomach, and only one thing kept echoing in his mind. Ahemji, I can't live without you. All he saw in his mind was her innocent, playful face as she had said that on Holi.

Had he made her life that miserable where she felt as though she had been dying a small death everyday.

What did you think would happen Ahem? That she would take your abuse day in and day out and not be effected.

Ahem knew his mom would not be happy if Gopi left the house, not only his mom but the whole family would be devastated, just that one day had been a disaster.

Ahem your still only thinking about how others would feel, have you thought about how you would feel? If not you, have you thought aboout what it would do to Gopi?

No he couldn't let her leave, just in one day he noticed the huge difference between Gopi and Rashi, and he had realized one thing at least, that Anita would have never fit into his family the way Gopi had, he needed to talk to someone, but who? His mom will be in no mood to talk to him and he didn't have any friends, and Jigar had his own problems dealing with Rashi.

He needed to fix this problem on his own, he can't expect anyone to help him.
