Squid Game star Lee Jung Jae's impersonator defrauds woman of Rs three crore in romance scam

Squid Game3 star Lee Jung-jae is one of the most respected Asian artistes in the world. He began his career as a model in South Korea and went onto to do films. However, Squid Game series catapulted him to global stardom. Known worldwide as Player No 456/ Gi-Hun, he is a matinee idol in South Korea and the crush of many. It seems he became part of a romance scam as someone impersonated him. As per a report in JTBC, a woman in her 50s (known in the media as Ms. A) was defrauded of approximately 500 million KRW i.e. USD 350,000. The culprits identified themselves as team of actor Lee Jung-jae.

It seems the scammer got in touch with the lady Ms. A through social media. He introduced himself as ‘Lee Jung Jae’, saying that he wanted to “communicate with fans”. He also sent her AI-generated selfies taken at the airport, and even shared a forged ID. He told her that he was busy with the shoot of Squid Game 3. The fake Lee Jung Jae would address her as ‘honey’ and ‘darling’ giving an impression that he loved her a lot. Later, another accomplice was introduced to her as a “business executive”. He said he could arrange a private meeting in exchange for Rs three crores.

We know that South Korean stars hold fan meets all over Southeast Asia. They also travel to foreign countries. The group of scammers took KRW 500 million from her in a span of six months. Mrs A said she truly believed it was him, and now felt very foolish about the same.

The Miryang Police Department in Gyeongnam Province is currently investigating the case. They feel it might be linked to a Cambodian crime network. As we know, South Korea is cracking down on Cambodia scammers. A South Korean student was kidnapped in the country and tortured to death. In this case, the criminal asked the woman to trust him.

A romance scam is an online fraud where gullible people are trapped by criminals in romantic relationships. The motive is to extort money.
