Bob should be an authority on Sufi songs as he has a separate thread on it. Guess nowadays the term Sufi music is used very loosely. Previously it was related to pure Spirituality. Quote:

Sufi Music

"Wherever you turn, there is the Face of God"

Qur'an Surah Baqara 2: 115

"When I sing, God loves me"

Sufi music is about union with the Beloved, with God. Music is the vehicle to reach the heart and attain a state of grace or enlightenment, a 'stateless state' or 'Ma'rifat' – the inner knowledge. Music is an essential part of spiritual life and practice for many Sufis - whether from Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Syria, Egypt, Senegal, or Morocco. Sufism is not about theories or the intellect; the goal is the experience of union with the One. Sufi teachers lead their students toward the One through practices, experience, movement, voice, and music.

Qawwali---devotional songs for the Love of God.

Summer Ji you are very right "Sufi" , "Sufiism" in general means to be "One with God or you can say Total Dependance on God" it started off as a Philosopical sect a group of people who believed in the above statement. Over time They formed Suffi Practices , Sufi Music , Sufi Poetry, Sufi Dance etc... It became a culture and is said to have been dated even before Islam.

Qawwali is a Sufi form of Devotional music to god. Just like Bhakti sangeet / Bhajans for the hindu's.

In Modern times music with praises to god, very deep devotional love to a human or god, Music with lines from the Quran are known as Sufiana music. As you might notice many people like to call it just "Sufi Music" to simplify the genre. Sufiana music means music thats is embeded with the Sufi beliefs , Philosophy and Culture.

To answer Ani yes Abida Parveen is a Sufiana singer. Lets change our term guys. It is Sufiana Music or Sufiana Andaaz. Since Actual Sufi is a religious sect and A philosophy / way of life.

To All Sufiana Music Lovers! Please do check out www.thesufi.com it has free information and Sufiana music from artists in countries like Pakistan , India , Turkey , Iran , Egypt and Senegal.

Enjoy and Take care! 😉

Ok...dont think Im picking on you or being a spoiled sport but being a muslim i have always been told the only devotion Allah asks is to read the Qur'an, pray five times a day (and then some) AND be a good human being for the betterment of your afterlife (of course five pillars of Islam ka bhi palan karna bohut important hai ek sache Muslim ka😳). Coming back to my point, it has been said any devotional song that has musical instruments is not appreciated, as music is useless activity. Also, music causes one to become a slave of passion (for music). Qawalli without harmoniam, tabla and whatever other instruments have been used in it can be accepted. Islam is only against passiveness and slavery of passion, so even their devotional "trips" while singing qawalli is a form of slavery of passion.
Hope I didnt hurt anyone's feelings but I think it is necessary to inform people of what you know😳.
