Obviously the person/source from whom/where you heard this must be highly ignorant and misinformed. I myself can recall some 15-20 films that Khayyam composed for. There must be many more.

What can I say to people who think that 36 hits in a row makes for a great composer. Quantity over quality?

Realistically Khayyam saheb career spans 45 years. His first film Footpath came in 1953 and he practically stopped composing music from 90s. He composed music for nearly 50 movies in that period. His notable movies are - Phir Subhah Hogi, Shola Aur Shabnam, Kabhie Kabhie, Trishul, Thodisi Bewafaii, Noorie, Umrao Jaan, Bazar and Razia Sultan. It was after a long period of 15 years, he composed the music of Yatra.

Thanks.
Its currently unavailable on Amazon. Great.
I would love to read it for more knowledge on the singer.
Someone mentions how Bharatan's version is a little scandalous. There's also an "authorized" version by Harish Bhimani, which I'm assuming is less scandalous.
Has anyone read both biographies?

and apparently also in quantity greater than "only 7 films" that was being bandied about😉

in any case, even the few movies that ID has to his credit are not exactly monets. so dont know that one can even talk about some great quality work in his case😆

Here's an excerpt from Raju Bharatan's book on Lata ji:

http://queenofmelody.rediffblogs.com/

The Classical Based Songs

Saiyaan kaise dhaaroon dheerSitaron Se Aage – There is a bit of history attached to this song. Apparantly, this is the number that led to a rift between S D Burman and Lata Mangeshkar leading to her not singing for the director for around six years. Quoting from Raju Bharathan's biography the story goes as follows: ""For a certain song,", Lata is quoted as saying, " I was asked by Dada Burman to sing in an extra-soft voice. I obeyed. The song as okayed. Later Dada thought that the choice of an extra-soft voice was not a happy one. So I got another message for a re-recording. I requested for a few days's time, as I was busy with other recordings. The machinations of certain 'kind' souls led to a misunderstanding and Dada called in another singer to re-record the song," ends Lata"That "another singer", Lataji was none other than Asha Bhosle! And the song, as revealed to me by that certain "kind soul", Jaidev, was Pag thumak chalat balkhaaye haay saiyan kaise dharun dheer (set to go on Vyjayanthimala in Sitaron se aagey : 1958). That Asha, in this saiyan kaise dharun dheer number, ultimately failed to come up with what Dada Burman wanted from you Lataji, is a pointer to how even something unsatisfactorily rendered by you, as Dada Burman saw it, was good enough finally to remain in Sitron se Aagey as it was in your voice. That is a tribute to the gap then between your vocals and those of others"

it's the day and age of numerous hits a year. lots of disposable income, exploding population etc. So i think 36 hits probably aint what it used to be back then. it's also hard imo for anyone to make a permanent mark anymore. just too much competition for entertainment mind share. shelf-life for music these days is very short. back then you probably had the same song play for a couple of years. nowadays, they come and go within a few months. so those 36 hits is more like 4 or 5 given how quickly we move on to new music these days. not as astonishing as HR is making it out to be. the only relevant comparison is that he is numero uno today, much like someone else was in the past.😊
