Chalo I'll give you some company. Here's my take.
Yay! 😃
Amanat was good. Yes, his song lacked a bit of feel, but he did well to hold his sur on such a difficult song (Mere Naina - for those who forgot). Apurva was fairly good on both days, and he'll improve as time goes on. However, I have yet to see him perform a slow/soft song. He also needed to be softer on Tu hi meri shab. Sunil was quite good on the 2nd day and was nice and soft in his singing - maybe the sherwani effect.
All three boys have a strong command on their sur and taal which speaks of classical training. Strong, but not perfect. All three have a long way to go still. They also need to learn to appropriately emote within the songs. That alone will bring immense improvements. As of today, Sunil was the better singer. Apurva sounded a bit "flat," though he was still strong in the sur department.
Yogi is an great guy, a great sport, with a sensible head on his shoulders. Himesh was simply harping about him being a nice guy - as if his singing was nothing to talk about 😕. But he's got a good voice - just needs some training. Like some people mentioned, with the right moulding, he can become another Paresh. He might be called back for Bramhastra, but unless he improves drastically, he shouldn't be. However, you can't trust Zee and their TRP quest.
Someone had said it earlier... a guy I'd invite to dinner, but wouldn't have as the after-dinner entertainment. He's sweet and honest. He is also blessed/lucky to have had the opportunity to come on stage at all. Because if we're talking skills...he's rather lacking in the musical department. I actually thought his father sang better. However, there is potential provided he takes training. As he said, he's not pakka on his sur but he's got a good voice. With the training he'll be a good singer. I hope sensibilities prevail and he isn't back in this season. Fortunately, he witheld the tears, which had been Rajeev's ticket back.
The girls were definitely second best on this show. If you women out there are looking for a female winner this time round, don't hold your breath. Rimi got a green card by virtue of being the least worst of the girls yesterday. Meghna seemed to improve today, because she chose an easier, non-classical, song. Shreshta was good on sur, but her voice lacked enough punch.
😆 Need I comment!?
Koyal stepped onto stage in a garishly colored, shoulderless outfit, and proceeded to sing a song that was equally out of place. Forget the bold lyrics and the fact that our judges wouldn't be able to identify with them. She was not on sur and the song lacked the magic that Himani created (I don't remember hearing Ujjaini sing this). Her facial expressions were also 'interesting'.
I, on the other hand, don't remember Himani's rendition. However, I was impressed by Ujjaini's rendition. The discomfort Koyal expressed lent to a lack of class to this song (saying a lot for the number actually). Ujjaini, however, carried it off with confidence which lent a finesse to the number. I think I've said enough on this topic all around 😆
Bappi da didn't have a good day. Not only did he lose a member, she was also lambasted for her song choice, and the implications were also that he should have been responsible for that. He looked lost among the other maestros, and I felt sorry for him.
I honestly don't think Bappida should be a judge/mentor for this show. It's at a different level from the Lil Champs. He could still afford to be kind, leniant and easily swayed then. But this is not a children's special...this is a show that determines the future of the Bollywood playback singing fraternity. I'm not at all comfortable having any of the mentors having a say in all of that, least of all Bappida.
Vishal shows signs of a mentor who is ready for a fight, should the need arise. he is not only critical of participants, but is also prepared to stand against the experienced mentors instead of letting them micromanage the show. Shekhar was okay - spoke only as much as was needed.
I actually like the two 😆 They certainly aren't time-tested stalwarts...but they are to the point, critical and still supportive. I like having them around 😃 And kudos to them standing up against the other mentors 😆 Did you notice, yesterday only VS stood up when Ashaji and Ghulam saab came on stage. I admired that the most of any of their actions.
Ismail had a great first day and a relaxed second day. Has put a lot of trust and belief in Amanat, and is prepared to back him to the hilt. I've heard Amanat has won Middle East Challenge, and that Ismail was a judge on that show, so he obviously knows what the kid is capable of. Had a relaxed ride so he didn't show much emotion, but we can expect some fireworks from this mentor should things not go his way next time.
No wonder! 😡 I find that a little unfair. Give other people a chance yaar. If Amanat has already had the opportunity once, others should have the chance to come and prove (or disprove) themselves. He's taken a safe bet in the hopes of winning again. *grump!* Oh I'll show him fireworks! 😆
Himesh - enough has been said about his attitude, so I won't say any more about it. Ah, who am I kidding! 😛 Just going to add a wee bit, okay? He seemed to be trying too hard to sugarcoat Asha ji - and completely ignored Ghulam Ali saab. Clearly wanted to be seen as a fair and strict mentor. But also made an effort to show that he understands and values his disciples as humans. Lost count of the times he called Yogi a great person, but don't think he called him a good singer even once. Also showed that he is willing to defend his songs - chahe unko criticize karne waali Asha ji hi kyon na ho! Has a great memory when it comes to his songs - which previous contestants sung it, what movie the song was from, who directed it, which actress danced to it, and even the box office result of the movie 😉. Bottom line - entertaining, if not endearing.
Bolun? Are you sure? Nahi yaar.. bewajah ban ho jaaoongi 😆 All I'll say is... I'm so glad Ashaji keeps puting him in his place and tokoing him 😆 He was a little too effusive in declaring his love for Ashaji though 😕 Such a bald-faced lie!
Ghulam Ali saab has a great knowledge of music, but I felt he didn't put his suggestions across clearly enough. Spoke with a lot of pauses, and I often didn't understand if he was giving a compliment or criticism. His statements were too short and seemed strongly edited. I think he was overshadowed by Asha ji.
Okay, I wasn't the only one! 😆 Sometimes I didn't understand the words he used and sometimes I didn't understand what he'd said as it would be drowned out or mumbled. But when I did understand him, the words were beautiful! He does seem to have far less screen-time.. no one seems to pay much attention to him other than Adi.
Asha ji was great. Supported the singers a lot, but also pointed out their faults, accompanied by suggestions on how to improve. She was also willing to hold the mentors responsible if their contestants didn't perform well. I liked her standing up for Himesh's contestants yesterday - and not allowing the mentors to comment on them, lest they get humiliated any further. Also liked how she apologized to Koyal on the mentors' behalf, although it was unnecessary. She brought up incidents of struggle from her own life where she had been branded as a bad singer. I think part of the reason why she feels for the singers is the way she had been treated in her own career in the beginning - so she knew what they were feeling. Contrast with Lata ji, who has had it much easier, and wouldn't think twice before saying a sharp word or two to a contestant.
I wouldn't mind if her words were a bit sharper as well. However, she's a great presence to have on the show for some real feedback! 😃 And listening to her mini-memoires is fun 😊
Aditya was sweet. Was primarily relegated to the background, but that's what I'd been saying from the start. In this show, a host is not as important as judges and mentors and contestants themselves. He did the basic things right, which is important.
😆 Poor thing seems to be stuck with the lable of "sweet." I have a feeling he'll develop a stronger presence with time. Shaan had the advantage of age as well as experience hosting the show solo. Adi doesn't have those advantages. But considering his confidence, he'll be a strong presence to acknowledge eventually.
My only problem with him is the hairstyle! It looks like a porcupine is sitting on top of his head 😆 Ye stylist log bhi na 😆
Overall this wasn't as great as week as expected, but hopefully the coming weeks will be better, with the Pakistani singers and everyone's favorite, Mauli, performing.
Don't even say "everyone's" I most certainly do not favor Mauli. She's not even within the top 5 as far as I'm concerned! 😛 But yes, I am looking forward to hearing Wasi and Junaid again. Both need to improve a lot, but have immense potential as well. Sikander and Mussarat...eh. We'll see. And what about the other Indian contestants? 😆 It's sad that I don't even remember most of their names. Speaks to how lack-luster they were.
