Leela Chitnis.... he used to just collapse at her feet saying maaaaaaaaa.....in a typical tone that we again used to use to imitate Dev saab... Oh we had such fun at his expense...😆

😆😆😆..that was hilarious

cudgels? aren't those low-tech now?😛😆

When we visualise a typical Amitabh song, the voice of Kishorda echoes through our ears. Think of Shammi Kapoor and Rafi saab comes to mind instantly. Talk about Raj Kapoor and Mukeshji starts singing in the background. Talk about Dilip Kumar and you hear Rafi saab overshadowing the fading voices of Talat and Mukesh , until it is Rafi's voice alone that you hear.

Now, talk about DEV ANAND: Is that Rafi or Kishore ? Who comes to your mind?

Great thread Adi.!!

Dev Anand had a style of his own and I liked him (especially in the 1950s and 1960s movies). He has had Rafi and Kishore mostly singing for him...and Hemant at times. Remember 'Solva Saal'? 'Hai apna dil to awara' has Hemant, which is romantic no doubt. But the chhed-chhaad bit comes through in full measure, in Rafi's 'Yehin to hai woh, yehin to hai'.

Speaking of other songs. I like 'Khoya khoya chand' better in audio, than its picturization. Somehow the way DA sways his hands, droops and sways some more, reminds me distinctly of our tree-swinging ancestors 😕 Now people here are going to kill me for this! Ok he is a VERY sweet tree-swinger 😉

I love the guy, I think he is very very suave, cute, handsome.... oh !!!!!!!! I just love the guy.

I know what u mean by the loose jointed walk, but that was just so HIM. 😳

I have seen practically every movie and have a collection of practically every movie (particularly the black and white variety) till Hare Rama Hare Krishna and he was just 😃... cant get adjectives, and cant write more, for fear of censure 😆😆😆

Kaala Bazaar which features Khoya Khoya Chand also features the very very beautiful and captivating "Apni toh har aah ek toofan hai, kya kare, woh jaankar anjaan hai".... The mischief in his eyes as he sits on the lower berth in a train compartment, apparently lamenting on his fate to God, but in fact referring to Waheeda Rehman who was sleeping in the berth above, right in front of her parents, who are in doubt over the meaning of his words, which were so beautifully shrouded in its verse.

Another beautiful song of Dev Anand, could have been picturised on a better heroine was "Aise toh na dekho"... Rafi Saab and Dev Anand was a combination completely irresistible.

Priya, you seem to like Dev Anand for being Dev Anand. What was your reaction when the duplicate Dev Anand came into the picture. did u like that guy too, or you were furious with him for imitating dev saab?

Naa, did not like the guy, because he wasnt even doing a good job imitating him..... he was doing what Sarita wrote about - behaving like a tree swinging ancestor. Furious - No. As a fan, he was entitled to express his feelings the way he liked, which may have included annihilation of the man that Dev Saab was. I remain a fan of Dev Saab.

again, excellent thread Adi.

in defense of tree-swinging, 😆 i think they did not have the gimmicry and the technological aspects of film-making to spice things up that they do today. since not every movie could be a pyasa or kagaz ke phool types, i'd believe the acting, the mannerisms and the make-up had to be loud to keep the audience from snoring and to give them escape from the humdrum life.

another thing, you see dev anand in those old movies and you never feel he is a cheap filmi romeo- he's like priya said, a really suave guy, and for me a class apart.

The tree swinging part,hmmmm....

If you go by the songs of 50's,early 60's, there was way too much melody in them, and if one broke into an excercise routine like in the 80's ( jeetendra- sridevi), (Govinda-neelam)etc, or todays kind of absurd techno savvy dance routine..it would kill the mood of the song outright. Somehow walking on the roads, smiling coyly, pulling out a strand of grass, and playing with it when sitting in a park and singing, or imagining a sequence while travelling, or gazing into each others eys around the tree, made it look more authentic, more natural.

In a regular normal life, who would get to the middle of the road and start dancing with a whole bunch of synchronised group for company. A couple of natural songs of recent years I can think of is "pihu bole, jaanu na" in Parineeta, or "pehla nasha pehla khumar" in recent times.
